Aging is associated with a reduction in skeletal muscle fiber size and number, leading to a decline in physical function and structural integrity-a condition known as sarcopenia. This syndrome is further characterized by elevated levels of inflammatory mediators that promote skeletal muscle catabolism and reduce anabolic signaling.Androgens are involved in various biological processes, including the maintenance, homeostasis and trophism of skeletal muscle mass. The decline in androgen levels contributes, indeed, to androgen deficiency in aging people. Such clinical syndrome exacerbates the mus

Intramuscular injection of Wnt7a has been shown to accelerate and augment skeletal muscle regeneration and to ameliorate dystrophic progression in mdx muscle, a model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Here, we assessed muscle regeneration and function in wild type (WT) and mdx mice where Wnt7a was deleted in muscle using a conditional Wnt7a floxed allele and a Myf5-Cre driver. We found that both WT and mdx mice lacking Wnt7a in muscle, exhibited marked deficiencies in muscle regeneration at 21 d following cardiotoxin (CTX) induced injury. Unlike WT, deletion of Wnt7a in mdx resulted in de

Quantifying skeletal muscle size is necessary to identify those at risk for conditions that increase frailty, morbidity, and mortality, as well as decrease quality of life. Although muscle strength, muscle quality, and physical performance have been suggested as important assessments in the screening, prevention, and management of sarcopenic and cachexic individuals, skeletal muscle size is still a critical objective marker. Several techniques exist for estimating skeletal muscle size; however, each technique presents with unique characteristics regarding simplicity/complexity, cost, radiation

A decline in muscle mass and function represents one of the most problematic changes associated with aging, and has dramatic effects on autonomy and quality of life. Several factors contribute to the inexorable process of sarcopenia, such as mitochondrial and autophagy dysfunction, and the lack of regeneration capacity of satellite cells. The physiologic decline in muscle mass and in motoneuron functionality associated with aging is exacerbated by the sedentary lifestyle that accompanies elderly people. Regular physical activity is beneficial to most people, but the elderly need well-designed

Skeletal muscle disorders are mostly genetic and include several rare diseases. With disease progression, muscle fibrosis and adiposis occur, resulting in limited mobility. The long course of these diseases combined with limited treatment options affect patients both psychologically and economically, hence the development of novel treatments for neuromuscular diseases is crucial to obtain a better quality of life. As a widely used hypoglycemic drug in clinical practice, metformin not only has anti-inflammatory, autophagy-regulating, and mitochondrial biogenesis-regulating effects, but it has a

Cysticercosis in humans is caused by larval cysts of the tapeworm Taenia solium. Any tissue in the human body can become infected by these larval cysts, but the central nervous system, skeletal muscles, subcutaneous tissues, and eyes are the most frequently affected. Muscle cysts are uncommon and typically do not present with any symptoms. In this study, we present a rare case of skeletal cysticercosis as a calf swelling and its management.

Skeletal muscle wasting occurs in both chronic and acute diseases. Increasing evidence has shown this debilitating process is associated with short- and long-term outcomes in critical, cancer and surgical patients. Both muscle quantity and quality, as reflected by the area and density of a given range of attenuation in CT scan, impact the patient prognosis. In addition, ultrasound and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) are also widely used in the assessment of body composition due to their bedside viability and no radioactivity. Mechanism researches have revealed complicated pathways are i

Skeletal muscle is a major metabolic organ that uses mostly glucose and lipids for energy production and has the capacity to remodel itself in response to exercise and fasting. Skeletal muscle wasting occurs in many diseases and during aging. Muscle wasting is often accompanied by chronic low-grade inflammation associated to inter- and intra-muscular fat deposition. During aging, muscle wasting is advanced due to increased movement disorders, as a result of restricted physical exercise, frailty, and the pain associated with arthritis. Muscle atrophy is characterized by increased protein degrad

Skeletal muscles have a fundamental role in locomotion and whole body metabolism, with muscle mass and quality being linked to improved health and even lifespan. Optimizing nutrition in combination with exercise is considered an established, effective ergogenic practice for athletic performance. Importantly, exercise and nutritional approaches also remain arguably the most effective countermeasure for muscle dysfunction associated with aging and numerous clinical conditions, e.g., cancer cachexia, COPD, and organ failure, via engendering favorable adaptations such as increased muscle mass and

Clarifying the confusion regarding the term "muscle death" is of great importance, especially for clinicians. In response to various stimuli, skeletal muscle may undergo pathological changes, leading to muscle atrophy and consequently resulting in the loss of muscle strength and function. Depending on the stimulus, skeletal muscles can be induced to die through different mechanisms mainly via apoptosis, autophagy and necrosis. Muscle death may occur secondary to various physiological and pathological conditions such as aging, starvation, immobilization, denervation, inflammation, muscle diseas

AIM: To investigate the effects of muscle denervation and the introduction of the β2-adrenoceptor agonist, formoterol, on the relationship between muscles and underlying skeletal growth.
METHOD: Thirty-one (4-week-old) male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to four groups: Surgical Sham; Denervated; Denervated + β2-agonist; and β2-agonist only. The Surgical Sham group had the left masseteric nerve exposed but not sectioned. Both of the denervated groups had the left masseteric nerve exposed and sectioned. The groups receiving the β2-agonist had formoterol directly injected into the left masse

Due to its essential role in movement, insulating the internal organs, generating heat to maintain core body temperature, and acting as a major energy storage depot, any impairment to skeletal muscle structure and function may lead to an increase in both morbidity and mortality. In the context of skeletal muscle, altered metabolism is directly associated with numerous pathologies and disorders, including diabetes, and obesity, while many skeletal muscle pathologies have secondary changes in metabolism, including cancer cachexia, sarcopenia and the muscular dystrophies. Furthermore, the importa

Taurine abundantly contained in the skeletal muscle has been considered as one of essential factors for the differentiation and growth of skeletal muscles. The previous studies in the taurine transporter knockout mice showed that deficiency of taurine content in the skeletal muscle caused incomplete muscular developments, morphological abnormalities, and exercise abilities. In fetal and neonatal periods, taurine must be an essential amino acid due to no biosynthesis capacity, and therefore, taurine should be endogenously supplied through placenta and maternal milk. In general cell culture cond

Neuralgic amyotrophy has been attributed to lesions in the brachial plexus. However, recent studies suggest mononeuropathy multiplex as an underlying pathology at least in a group of patients with neuralgic amyotrophy. We report a man who developed weakness of finger extensors following severe shoulder pain. Neurological examination revealed weakness in the muscles innervated by the left posterior interosseus nerve and the ulnar nerve. We diagnosed him with neuralgic amyotrophy based on the typical clinical course and the neurological and neurophysiological findings. A skeletal muscle MRI reve

The nondystrophic myotonias and primary periodic paralyses are an important group of genetic muscle diseases characterized by dysfunction of ion channels that regulate membrane excitability. Clinical manifestations vary and include myotonia, hyperkalemic and hypokalemic periodic paralysis, progressive myopathy, and cardiac arrhythmias. The severity of myotonia ranges from severe neonatal presentation causing respiratory compromise through to mild later-onset disease. It remains unclear why the frequency of attacks of paralysis varies greatly or why many patients develop a severe permanent fixe

Athletes have long supported the concept that anabolic steroids increase skeletal muscle mass. However, it was only recently that both testosterone and its synthetic analogue, oxandrolone, were proven capable of inducing myotrophic effects in postabsorptive human skeletal muscle. These findings have provided the physiological evidence that anabolic steroids deserve attention in the clinical arena as a pharmacological intervention against losses in lean body mass associated with age, disease, trauma and burn injury. However, we are lacking in vivo molecular evidence that would directly or indir

To clarify the significance of intracellular lysosomal (cathepsins B, L and H) and extralysosomal (calpain) proteolytic systems in the process of muscle fiber degradation in inflammatory myopathies, biopsied muscle specimens were examined from patients with polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM). Generally, in specimens from patients with PM and DM, but not in those from normal controls, muscle fibers surrounding inflammatory infiltrates or in the perifascicular regions, and occasionally mononuclear cell infiltrates demonstrated positive immunostaining for calpain and cathepsins B, L, and

Twenty-two chronic alcoholic patients were assessed by neurologic examination and muscle biopsy. The patients manifested proximal muscular weakness to a variable extent. One case presented as an acute bout of myopathy, according to the Manual Muscle Test, MMT. The most prominent histologic feature observed was muscle atrophy (95.3%) better evidenced through the ATPase stain with the predominance of type II A fibers (71.4%). Lack of the mosaic pattern (type grouping) seen in 76% of the cases and an important mitochondrial proliferation with intrasarcoplasmatic lipid accumulation in 63% of the p

The characteristics of transient contractures elicited by rapid cooling of frog or mouse muscles perfused in vitro with solutions equilibrated with 0.5-2.0% halothane are reviewed. The data indicate that these halothane-cooling contractures are dose dependent and reproducible, and their amplitude is larger in muscles containing predominantly slow-twitch type fibers, such as the mouse soleus, than in muscles in which fast-twitch fibers predominate, such as the mouse extensor digitorum longus. The halothane-cooling contractures are potentiated in muscles exposed to succinylcholine. The effects o
