We report on three children with acute transverse myelitis. One of them also had optic neuritis. In connection with these three cases, we discuss etiology, diagnosis and outcome of transverse myelitis in childhood and possible involvement of the optic nerve. Our observations show the variability of spinal cord deficit and the fact that there can be a good prognosis, despite severe initial neurological deficits and massive elevation of basic myelin protein in children with ATM.

Transverse myelitis is one of the most serious neurological complications occurring in the course of systemic lupus erythematosus. We describe two lupus patients, with transverse myelitis, one of whom had associated optic neuritis. In both, magnetic resonance imaging of the spinal cord showed an abnormal signal. In one case a good response to steroid and immunosuppressive therapy was observed; the other case failed to improve despite the therapy applied.

Myelopathy is a well recognised but infrequent neurological manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The case of a 27 year old woman with SLE of seven years' duration who developed a spastic paraparesis during her second pregnancy is reported. Magnetic resonance imaging did not show any intrinsic abnormality of the spinal cord. Anticardiolipin antibody was weakly positive and C4 was low. The patient responded dramatically to steroids.

The patient, a 30 year-old man, dentist, started having an influenza-like infection which lasted five days, with malaise, muscle pain throughout the body and fever. One day before the hospital admission he presented urinary retention followed in the next day by ataxia and numbness sensation in both feet and lower third of his legs. The neurological examination disclosed a thoracic spinal cord impairment at T9-T10 level and the diagnosis of a post- infectious transverse myelitis was made. The plain Rx of the spine showed a spina bifida oculta in the T7 vertebra, which is roughly at the same lev

In tropical regions transverse myelitis may be caused by involvement with schistosoma or the eggs of this organism. Although 200 million people seem to be infected with this disease, involvement of the spinal cord is rare. A case of a 15-year-old boy is described and some literature reviewed.

BACKGROUND: Acute transverse myelitis (ATM) is a pathological heterogenous inflammatory condition which causes acute or subacute spinal cord dysfunction. Diagnosis is challenging as the absence of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) spinal cord lesions do no exclude this as a differential when patients present with well-defined dermatomal paraesthesia or myotome weakness. In approximately 40% of patient, there is a lack of MRI cord abnormalities. In addition, there are numerous of causes of ATM which contributes to diagnostic difficulty. The aim of this report is to highlight the challenges of di

Systemic mycosis raging endemic, histoplasmosis has an increasing incidence with the advent of HIV-AIDS. The authors report a case of vertebra-medullar histoplasmosis mimicking tuberculous spondylodiscitis in a patient without proven immunosuppression. This was a patient who spent 3 years in a highly endemic area. He presented with signs of transverse myelitis. MRI of the lumbar spine showed a para-vertebral tumor lesion that partially infiltrated the spinal cord. The positive diagnosis of histoplasmosis was made by histomorphology, and symptoms were reduced with administration of itraconazole

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic revealed a myriad of postinfectious severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) sequelae, many of which remain poorly understood. We describe a rare presentation of a patient developing 2 simultaneous COVID-19 sequelae: transverse myelitis and acquired von Willebrand syndrome (AVWS). There have been numerous published case reports of patients developing transverse myelitis after a diagnosis of COVID-19. However, none have described AVWS as an observed complication from SARS-CoV-2 infection. To our knowledge, this case report is

Transverse myelitis is an acute inflammation of the spinal cord. Its annual incidence is 1-8 per million. Behçet disease is also a rare autoimmune disease. Transverse myelitis can be a manifestation of neuro-Behçet's disease. For those two rare diseases to present in one patient sets a challenge in anesthetic management. Up to our knowledge, our approach to managing these cases has not been reported in the literature. We present the case of a 37-year-old female patient in her 34th week of pregnancy, showing manifestations of neuro-Behçet's disease and recurrent transverse myelitis. She present

We aim to report a COVID-19-related case of acute myelitis that has not been associated with any other viral infections. A 23-year-old student was admitted to the hospital within a month from the time of loss of smell and taste with features of acute-onset non-compressive myelitis with paresthesia on both sides from the Th9 level. Complex neurological, clinical, laboratory, and neuroimaging examination was performed within 24 hours of admission. MRI of the spine showed a segment of increased T2 signal in the center of the spinal cord at Th11-Th12. Elevated protein level and lymphocytic pleocyt

OBJECTIVE: Acute transverse myelitis (ATM) is characterized by motor weakness, sensory changes, and autonomic dysfunction. However, diagnosis of ATM is based on early-stage clinical features only (and clarification of the cause of disease), which are difficult for emergency department (ED) physicians owing to low incidence rates. We performed retrospective analysis of ATM in order to provide clinical insights for early detection.
METHODS: Medical records of patients, who were finally diagnosed with ATM from January 2005 to February 2013, were investigated. Data, including demographics, clinic

Incomplete transverse myelitis (ITM) of unknown origin is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. This prospective, open-label study was undertaken to determine whether antituberculous treatment (ATT) might help patients with ITM whose condition continues to deteriorate despite receiving IV methylprednisolone treatment. The study consisted of 67 patients with steroid-refractory ITM in whom Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) was suspected clinically and in whom other known causes of myelopathy were excluded. The study occurred from January 2003 to June 2010. Patients underwent tria

This is a case report of the 2nd oldest patient reported in the literature with transverse myelitis after mumps, and the 1st with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) correlation. He is a 38-year-old Chinese man presenting with bilateral lower limb weakness and numbness, and urinary retention starting 3 weeks after an attack of mumps parotitis. Clinically, there was mild lower limb paresis, absent plantar responses and reduced pain sensation below the umbilicus. MRI revealed cord swelling and increased T2 signal from T7 to T11. Cerebrospinal fluid showed 23 cells/mm3 and 55 mg protein/dl. He recei

A 69-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of disturbed consciousness and gait disturbance. He had herpes zoster (HZ) in his left thigh 10 days before admission, and motor paresis of four extremities developed. A dark red rash was observed in his left buttock and thigh (L2-3 region), which was also scattered in the right lower leg, chest wall, and both upper extremities. Brain MRI showed no lesions of demyelinating plaques. Spine MRI showed no abnormal signals in the lumbar region; however, high signals in the spinal cord from the bottom of the medulla oblongata to the upper (Th 2)

BACKGROUND: Anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody associated disorders frequently manifest as optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. While their clinical phenotypes overlap with relapsing inflammatory Central nervous system (CNS) conditions such as multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, MOG-related syndromes frequently occur in a younger age group. In children, longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) is less specific for anti-aquaporin-4 associated neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, and has also

Scorpion envenomation is common in India but rarely leads to neurovascular complications. We present a rare case of a 72-year-old male who developed acute transverse myelitis, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and pulmonary thromboembolism following a scorpion sting. The patient presented with sudden-onset paraparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine revealed longitudinal hyperintensity from T5 to T12, suggestive of transverse myelitis, along with evidence of spinal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Computed tomography (CT) pulmonary angiography confirmed bilateral pulmonary thromboembolism. Cereb

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a frequent complication of longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM). In neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder-associated transverse myelitis (NMOSD-TM), pain has been largely attributed to AQP4-IgG-mediated inflammation. However, pain burden in double-seronegative LETM (DSN-LETM) remains poorly characterized.
METHODS: In this prospective study, patients with LETM (≥3 vertebral segments) in remission were enrolled and classified as DSN-LETM (negative for anti-aquaporin-4 and anti-MOG antibodies) or seropositive NMOSD-TM. Pain was assessed using PainDETEC
