Oestrid myiasis at a cross-road.

The oestrids are a genuinely unique group of Diptera that represent many species whose larvae parasitize mammals, feeding on live tissues of a wide range of hosts, from mice to elephants, causing obligatory myiases. Those have had greatest impact on the activities of humans and their use of animals (e.g., as food, recreation, in the conduct of wars). To a large extent their impact has been controlled through the use of therapeutic application of synthetic chemical treatments. While in some limited cases eradication has been achieved, it is unlikely to become the norm as these parasites seem we

[Myiasis by Cochliomyia hominivorax in Argentina].

Miasis is the infestation of man and animals by larvae of flies belonging to the order Diptera, suborder Cyclorrapha. Eighty percent of miasis in Argentina is caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax, a species that induces pronounced tissue invasion and destruction, and results in severe clinical forms. Because of the aggressiveness of its larvae, it is important to reach a specific etiological diagnosis. We present four cases of miasis by C. hominivorax in two patients living in the city of Buenos Aires but working in a rural area and two patients living in the Greater Buenos Aires.

Wound myiasis: the role of entodermoscopy.

Although wound or traumatic myiasis is common in tropical countries, only recently cases associated with underlying dermatoses, such as seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis, have been reported. We describe a patient with seborrheic dermatitis and an ulcerated lesion on the scalp, in which the dermatological examination with the aid of dermoscopy allowed the identification of larvae (maggots) compatible with infestation by Cochliomyia hominivorax. Treatment was performed with oral and topical ivermectin, followed by manual extraction of the larvae.

Nosocomial myiasis in a patient with diabetes.

This report describes a case of nosocomial myiasis caused by larvae of Sarcophaga (Bercaea) africa. The parasitosis developed in an ulcer on the heel of a patient with type 2 diabetes. The ulcer was dressed when the deposition occurred. An experiment was performed in order to demonstrate the ability of Sarcophaga larvae to move through bandages and reach purulent wounds. This report highlights the need for particular attention, education and specific protocols in hospitals in order to avoid myiasis, which can compromise the organization's reputation for hygienic standards with possible legal c…

[A case report of nasal myiasis].

A 66-year-old male patient presented with rhinocnesmus and mild epistaxis. More than 100 maggots were found in the right nasal cavity by nasal endoscopy. The affected nasal mucosa was erythematous, edematous, ulcerated, and mild bleeding on probing was present. No nasal septal perforation or destruction of nose was noted. Middle and inferior meatus, nasopharyngeal mucosa, orbit, facial skin, oral cavity, gingiva and external auditory canal were normal. The maggot was identified as larvae of Chrysomyia megacephala.

Myiasis in palate by Cochliomyia hominivorax.

Myiasis is the infestation of tissues and organs of animals and humans caused by the larvae of certain dipteran flies. It is more common in undeveloped and tropical countries and usually affects elderly patients, persons who are sick, and patients with mental illness. Oral myiasis is a rare pathologic condition and a risk to the patient's life because of its great destructive potential. Therefore, appropriate treatment is necessary. This article aimed to report a case of myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax in the palate of a patient with primary progressive aphasia, which was successfull…
