Effects of nanoparticles in species of aquaculture interest.

Recently, it was observed that there is an increasing application of nanoparticles (NPs) in aquaculture. Manufacturers are trying to use nano-based tools to remove the barriers about waterborne food, growth, reproduction, and culturing of species, their health, and water treatment in order to increase aquaculture production rates, being the safe-by-design approach still unapplied. We reviewed the applications of NPs in aquaculture evidencing that the way NPs are applied can be very different: some are direclty added to feed, other to water media or in aquaculture facilities. Traditional toxici

The role of calcifying nanoparticles in biology and medicine.

Calcifying nanoparticles (CNPs) (nanobacteria, nanobacteria-like particles, nanobes) were discovered over 25 years ago; nevertheless, their nature is still obscure. To date, nobody has been successful in credibly determining whether they are the smallest self-replicating life form on Earth, or whether they represent mineralo-protein complexes without any relation to living organisms. Proponents of both theories have a number of arguments in favor of the validity of their hypotheses. However, after epistemological analysis carried out in this review, all arguments used by proponents of the theo

Interface of nanoparticle-coated electropolished stents.

Nanostructures entail a high potential for improving implant surfaces, for instance, in stent applications. The electrophoretic deposition of laser-generated colloidal nanoparticles is an appropriate tool for creating large-area nanostructures on surfaces. Until now, the bonding and characteristics of the interface between deposited nanoparticles and the substrate surface has not been known. It is investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy to characterize an electropolished NiTi stent surface coated by laser-generated

In vitro and in vivo toxicity of CdTe nanoparticles.

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) nanoparticles exhibit strong and stable fluorescence that is attractive for many applications such as biological probing and solid state lighting. The evaluation of nanoparticle toxicity is important for realizing these practical applications. However, no systematic studies of CdTe nanoparticle toxicity have been reported. We investigated and compared the size- and concentration-dependent cytotoxicity of CdTe nanoparticles in human hepatoma HepG2 cells using the MTT assay. CdTe nanoparticles elicited cytotoxicity in a concentration- and size-dependent manner, with smal

Application of gold nanoparticles to microencapsulation of thioridazine.

Thioridazine-containing ethyl cellulose (EC) microcapsules were prepared in the presence of gold nanoparticles via the W/O/W emulsification solvent-evaporation method. The gold nanoparticles have been verified as human safe and the nondestructive physisorption of thioridazine on gold nanoparticles was corroborated with the time-of-flight second ion mass spectrometry measurements. The morphology of the formed microcapsules (ETA, containing EC, Thioridazine and Au) changed substantially because of the presence of gold nanoparticles. In addition to a prolonged controlled release, these ETA microc

Systemically delivered antibody-labeled magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles are less toxic than plain nanoparticles when activated by alternating magnetic fields.

OBJECTIVE: Toxicity from off-target heating with magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) is generally assumed to be understood. MHT research focuses on development of more potent heating magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONs), yet our understanding of factors that define biodistribution following systemic delivery remains limited. Preclinical development relies on mouse models, thus understanding off-target heating with MHT in mice provides critical knowledge for clinical development. METHODS: Eight-week old female nude mice received a single tail vein injection of bionized nanoferrite (BNF) MIONs or

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect of cerium dioxide nanoparticles immobilized on the surface of silica nanoparticles in rat experimental pneumonia.

A massage with the potent counter-inflammatory material, cerium dioxide nanoparticles, is promising and the antioxidant properties of CeO2 are considered the main, if not the only, mechanism of this action. Nevertheless, the elimination of ceria nano-particles from the organism is very slow and there is a strong concern for toxic effect of ceria due to its accumulation. To overcome this problem, we engineered a combined material in which cerium nanoparticles were immobilized on the surface of silica nanoparticles (CeO2 NP), which is shown to be easily removed from an organism and could be used

Efficient fluorescence energy transfer system between CdTe-doped silica nanoparticles and gold nanoparticles for turn-on fluorescence detection of melamine.

We here report an efficient and enhanced fluorescence energy transfer system between confined quantum dots (QDs) by entrapping CdTe into the mesoporous silica shell (CdTe@SiO₂) as donors and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as acceptors. At pH 6.50, the CdTe@SiO₂-AuNPs assemblies coalesce to form larger clusters due to charge neutralization, leading to the fluorescence quenching of CdTe@SiO₂ as a result of energy transfer. As compared with the energy transfer system between unconfined CdTe and AuNPs, the maximum fluorescence quenching efficiency of the proposed system is improved by about 27.0%, and

From Grape Stalks to Lignin Nanoparticles: A Study on Extraction Scale-Up, Solubility Enhancement and Green Nanoparticle Production.

To effectively valorize lignin, some challenges must be addressed. First, emerging techniques based on green methods may experience difficulties during the scale-up process. Secondly, the low solubility of lignin can hinder further valorization. This study investigated the impact of lignin extraction scale-up on yield and purity and evaluated strategies to enhance lignin solubility. Lignin from grape stalks was extracted using two previously optimized methods-alkaline and deep eutectic solvents-at a scale-up by factors of 5, 10, and 20 times. Although a slight decrease in extraction yield was

Effects of silver-decorated PLGA nanoparticles on Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilms and evaluation of the detoxification limit of bacteria against these nanoparticles.

Silver nanoparticles exert high antibacterial activity and thus have been used in polymeric formulations for drug delivery. In recent years, polymeric formulations containing silver nanoparticles have been found to be highly effective against biofilm infections, which are difficult to treat with drugs only. However, the antibacterial effects of silver nanoparticles in polymer composites depending on administration time are still unknown. In this study, we used transmission electron microscopy to investigate the antibacterial activity of silver decorated poly(dl-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) (Ag

Nanoparticle-Based Vaccines for Brucellosis: Calcium Phosphate Nanoparticles-Adsorbed Antigens Induce Cross Protective Response in Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccine formulation with appropriate adjuvants is an attractive approach to develop protective immunity against pathogens. Calcium phosphate nanoparticles (CaPNs) are considered as ideal adjuvants and delivery systems because of their great potential for enhancing immune responses. In the current study, we have designed nanoparticle-based vaccine candidates to induce immune responses and protection against B. melitensis and B. abortus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this purpose, we used three Brucella antigens (FliC, 7α-HSDH, BhuA) and two multi-epitopes (poly B and poly T) absorbe

Exploring the impact of magnetic field and nanoparticle size on the magnetic properties of Fe(II)-triazole spin-crossover nanoparticles.

Three types of iron(II)-triazole spin-crossover nanoparticles were synthesized using a micellar exchange approach, each coated with a thin silica shell. Two were obtained under optimized conditions, yielding rod-shaped nanoparticles (1np, 2np). The synthesis of the third one involved a reduced co-surfactant amount, which led to oval-shaped nanoparticles (3np). The particle size of 1np (42 nm × 21 nm), 2np (113 nm × 53 nm), and 3np (234 nm × 137 nm), and their quality were confirmed using TEM microscopy with an energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalyzer and powder X-ray diffraction. The spin-c

Plasma Parameters During Nanoparticle-Enhanced Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (NELIBS) in the Presence of Nanoparticle-Protein Conjugates.

Nanoparticle-enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (NELIBS) is an optical emission technique based on the laser-induced plasma (LIP) on a sample after the deposition of plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) on its surface. The employment of the NPs allows an enhancement of the signal with respect to the one obtained with the conventional laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) enabling an extremely high sensitivity and very low limits of detection compared with the LIBS performance. Recently, NELIBS was used for monitoring the NP protein corona formation. As a matter of fact, the NPs in th
