BACKGROUND: Ependymomas are relatively uncommon tumors that constitute about 7% of all primary intracranial neoplasms. Among these, high-grade ependymomas are locally aggressive and recur most commonly at the primary site following resection. Ependymomas are also known to be the one glial neoplasm that tends to frequently metastasize inside and outside the central nervous system (CNS) that complicates workup and management. Metastasis due to surgical manipulation is common and neurosurgeons should be well-versed in the most effective methods to remove these tumors in order to avoid such metast

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence, clinical meaning and diagnostic value of extrapleural and cardiophrenic nodes occasionally observed on computed tomography (CT) scans of the chest.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 750 consecutive patients who underwent CT of the chest for different clinical purposes (340 nonneoplastic patients, 270 with extrathoracic neoplasms, 120 with intrathoracic neoplasms, 20 with pleural metastasis) and 91 patients with histologically proven malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). For each group of patients, we analysed the presence of extr

OBJECTIVE: Secondary urinary bladder tumors account for 2% of neoplasms in this location. Melanoma is the neoplasm that most frequently produces distant metastases in the bladder. Despite its low prevalence, it should be a possible diagnosis to consider facing urological symptoms, due to the existence of targeted therapies.
METHOD: We present two cases of uveal melanoma metastasis in the bladder, their characteristics, and a review of the literature.
RESULT: In this paper we present the histological characteristics and complementary techniques for the diagnosis of bladder metastases of melan

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to analyze the enhancement patterns of small bowel neoplasms on post-contrast multiphasic multidetector CT and to assess the diagnostic capacity for differentiating five tumor types.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of data on 92 small bowel neoplasms. The neoplasms were categorized into five groups according to pathology findings, not imaging findings (23 adenocarcinomas; 22 lymphomas; 19 metastases; 18 gastrointestinal stromal tumors [GIST]; 10 neuroendocrine tumors [NET]).
RESULTS: GIST and NET demonstrated a hypervascular pattern i

Metastasis to the pancreas from malignant tumors is a rare event, representing only 1% to 2% of all pancreatic neoplasms. They occur in 2 different clinicopathological settings: as a manifestation in widespread metastatic disease or as an isolated mass in the pancreas. We report the case of a 41-year-old woman who had a history of invasive lobular breast cancer treated with radical surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. After 21 years of total remission, she presented for severe lower back pain with jaundice, nausea, and loss of 9 kg in 3 months. Abdominal computed tomography demonstrated a

OBJECTIVE: Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare plasma cell neoplasm. It can occur as the sole manifestation of plasma cell neoplasm, as a metastasis from another extramedullary plasmacytoma, as a solitary plasmacytoma of the bone or as a consequence of multiple myeloma. These plasma cell tumors can occur anywhere and have to be differentiated from other neoplasms, infectious processes and chloroma.
STUDY DESIGN: We report the findings of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in 18 patients with extramedullary plasmacytoma. In six patients extramedullary plasmacytoma was the initial present

Lytic patellar lesions may occur in a variety of conditions, from commonly seen developmental, degenerative, traumatic, metabolic, infectious, iatrogenic to uncommon benign and malignant neoplasms. Patellar metastasis is rare. Due to the low incidence and the non-specific symptoms of metastatic anterior knee pain, delayed diagnosis is common and the prognosis is poor. It is worthwhile to remind clinicians and radiologists the possibility of patellar metastasis in patients with a history of previous malignancy presenting with an intractable anterior knee pain. We proposed the diagnosis and diff

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), also known as carcinoid tumors, are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that arise from cells throughout the neuroendocrine system, most commonly arising from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, and bronchi. Myocardial carcinoid metastasis is rare with an incidence among metastatic carcinoid patients of 4%. They are generally asymptomatic and detected incidentally. Infiltrative myocardial metastasis secondary to carcinoid tumor is exceedingly rare with only single-digit cases reported in the literature. We report the case of a 65-years-old female with a newly d

Metastasis to the heart from malignancy is a frequent but underestimated event. Tumors that are located in the mediastinum, such as pleural mesothelioma, are more frequently associated with cardiac colonization. Few reports have described metastasis from colon adenocarcinoma, which usually colonizes liver and lungs. Moreover, intracardiac localization is more common for primary cardiac neoplasms than for metastasis. We present an unusual case of a patient operated for colon adenocarcinoma who exhibited a single intracardiac secondary localization. Although the mass was huge, the patient was co

Breast cancer is one of the main sources of ovarian metastasis. Diffuse sheet of lobular carcinoma cells can strongly mimic granulosa cell tumor (GCT) which itself is a rare ovarian neoplasm constituting <5% of all the ovarian neoplasms. A 55-year-old female presented with a painful lump in the right breast associated with nipple discharge for 4 months, which on radiological and cytological findings was suspicious of an epithelial malignancy. During routine work-up, a solid-cystic lesion in the left ovarian adnexa was identified. The patient underwent right modified radical mastectomy along wi

Bile duct hamartomas, also known as von Meyenburg complexes, are benign neoplasms consisting of cystic dilatation of the bile duct surrounded by fibrous stroma. We report a rare case in a 60-year-old man who presented with coexistent von Meyenburg complex and esophageal carcinoma. Preoperative computed tomography did not reveal any liver tumors. Intraoperatively, a small lesion was discovered in segment III of the liver; the lesion was suspected to be a solitary liver metastasis from the esophageal carcinoma. Partial resection of the liver was performed, and pathological findings revealed bile

BACKGROUND: Whether ampullary neoplasms are best surgically managed by pancreaticoduodenectomy versus local ampullectomy is controversial. We sought to examine the outcome of patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy versus ampullectomy, as well as to identify factors predictive of lymph node metastasis in patients with ampullary neoplasms.
METHODS: Between 1970 and 2007, 450 patients who underwent surgical resection of ampullary adenoma or adenocarcinoma were identified from a prospective, single-institution database. Data on clinicopathologic factors, morbidity, mortality, and survival we

Presentation of a solitary cerebellar mass lead us to think about the presence of a primary tumour or the possibility of a pulmonary, mammary or digestive metastasis. However, once discarded these origins, is necessary to search the primary neoplasms in less frequent organs. Approximately, 5% of all intracranial metastasis have it's origin in a renal cancer. These lesions generally appear at the supratentorial area and within a generalized disease. In the other hand, the presentation of a solitary cerebellar metastasis from a renal carcinoma without affectation of other organs is a very unusua

The so called 'sweat gland carcinoma' is a rare skin malignancy. The differentiation between apocrine and eccrine neoplasms remains difficult. Skin tumors of the axilla are often suspected to be metastasis of other neoplasms in particular breast cancer. A 71-year-old man presented with a morphea-like plaque of the right axilla which in punch biopsy was first suspected as metastasis of primary lobular breast carcinoma. After further clinical and laboratory work up including immunohistochemistry the original diagnosis of a breast cancer had to be changed to solid apocrine carcinoma of the skin.

Papillary and pseudopapillary features are histopathologic findings typically associated with carcinomas (thyroid, pancreas, breast, prostate, bladder, kidney, or ovary) or mesothelioma. Melanoma is typically composed of nested and variably pigmented atypical cells. Here, we report a case of in-transit metastasis of melanoma presenting with prominent papillary features, and we discuss the differential diagnoses of neoplasms with papillary features. This case report suggests that the spectrum of neoplasms with papillary features should be expanded to include melanoma, a pattern that, to the bes

Ossifying fibromyxoid tumors are rare soft-tissue neoplasms, usually with an indolent course. However, atypical/malignant variants have been described, showing either local recurrence after complete excision or metastasis to the lungs, mediastinum, adrenals, or soft tissue. We report the case of an ossifying fibromyxoid tumor of the left ankle that metastasized to the lung and thyroid gland 12 years after the initial diagnosis and surgical treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of this neoplasm metastasizing to the thyroid gland.

INTRODUCTION: Phyllodes tumors are rare fibroepithelial neoplasms of the breast, account for less than 1 % of all breast neoplasms, lymph node metastasis is even rare and routine axillary dissection is not recommended. Approximately 20 % of patients with malignant phyllodes tumors develop distant metastasis.

Ocular neoplasms represent 10% of all equine neoplasms and ocular squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common one. This report describes the clinical presentation, laboratory, ultrasonography, postmortem, histopathology and immunohistochemistry findings of a mixed ocular neoplasm in a 10-year-old draft mare. The mare had a one-year history of left ocular mass. Complete destruction of the left eye with loss of vision was observed. A large ulcerated mass oozing blood replaced the left eye. Left parotid lymph node was swollen and had a sinus tract discharging pus. Ultrasonography revealed a

Metastatic tumors within the cervix are uncommon if one excludes endometrial carcinoma, which involves the cervix by direct spread. A variety of other neoplasms rarely metastasize to the cervix and, in most cases, the diagnosis is straightforward because of a combination of clinical and pathologic parameters, common features of metastatic carcinoma within the cervix including predominant involvement of the deep stroma, absence of surface involvement and of an in situ component, and prominent lymphovascular permeation. We describe 6 cases of metastatic adenocarcinoma involving the cervix with s
