Osteoma is a slow-growing, benign and uncommon neoplasm located primarily in the region of the maxillofacial skeleton. An extraskeletal soft-tissue osteoma is exceedingly rare. Here, we report a case of soft-tissue osteoma occurring in the pterygomandibular space in a 66-year-old woman. The patient complained of a hard mass superior to the left posterior teeth. Clinical examination did not reveal any extraoral swelling, facial asymmetry or difficulty in mouth opening, and the regional lymph nodes were non-palpable. CT images revealed well-circumscribed dense, radiopaque masses located between

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm arising from cartilaginous bone or soft tissue. It is uncommon yet devastating. Our patient was a 21-year-old man who presented with pleuritic chest pain and weight loss. His chest radiograph showed left pleural effusion. His pleural effusion analysis was consistent with exudative pleural effusion. Tuberculosis workup was negative. Pleural fluid cytology did not yield malignant cells. Subsequently, his computed tomography of thorax showed left rib sclerotic lesion with soft tissue component. Biopsy of the soft tissue eventually confirmed the d

Hypereosinophilia (HE) is defined as a persistent elevated eosinophil count of ≥1.5 × 109/L. HE can be one of the dominant manifestations of a hematopoietic myeloid neoplasm or secondary/reactive to an underlying medical condition. If a cause of HE and its associated tissue/organ damage is not determined, the condition is considered to be idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES). The work-up of HE can be challenging due to a broad range of causes of HE that can be either reactive or neoplastic. In recent years, with the advent of molecular genetic testing and the introduction of targeted th

Osteosarcoma is the most common type of primary bone cancer, which usually appears in the distal femur. The diagnosis of this condition typically involves advanced imaging and tissue biopsy, as well as taking into account characteristic clinical and radiographic indicators. The treatment approach for distal femoral osteosarcoma is multidisciplinary and involves initial chemotherapy, followed by limb-sparing surgery, reconstruction of bone and soft tissue, and subsequent adjuvant chemotherapy. We present a case study of a 25-year-old male admitted with a blastic lesion in the distal femur, conf

Results from transabdominal fine-needle aspiration of the spleen in 28 dogs and 5 cats are reported. Splenomegaly was present in 79% of these patients, and splenic masses were present in 15%. Extramedullary hematopoiesis, the most common cytologic diagnosis, was found in 24% of the patients and was associated with a variety of diseases including immune hemolytic anemia, hemangiosarcoma, and bone marrow hypoplasia. Hematopoietic neoplasms including lymphosarcoma, plasmacytoma, myelogenous leukemia, and systemic mastocytosis were diagnosed in 24% of the patients. Other diagnoses included maligna

Angiosarcoma is an uncommon malignant mesenchymal neoplasm, accounting for 1-2% of all sarcomas. More than half are cutaneous, with the remainder arising in the deep soft tissue, breast, bone or viscera, particularly the liver, spleen and heart. Mediastinal angiosarcomas are exceedingly uncommon. While epithelioid morphology is sometimes a minor component in conventional angiosarcoma, tumors with a predominance of epithelioid morphologic features are designated as epithelioid angiosarcoma (EAS). This is a report of a 58-year-old woman presenting with severe chest pain, accompanied by worsening

INTRODUCTION: The tissues of the laryngeal region only rarely harbor primary cartilaginous lesions, and squamous cell carcinoma remains the most frequently encountered malignant tumor in this area.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the salient histological features of cartilaginous laryngeal lesions to provide differential diagnostics and guidelines for distinguishing the benign from the malignant ones.
RESULTS: Cartilaginous neoplasms of the larynx include chondroma and chondrosarcoma. Among the overarching group of all forms of laryngeal sarcoma, chondrosarcoma forms the most common entit

The survival of children with cancer has increased dramatically in the last decades, as a result of advances in diagnosis, treatment and supportive care. Each year in Turkey, 2500-3000 new childhood cancer cases are expected. According to the Turkish Pediatric Oncology Group and Turkish Pediatric Hematology Societies Registry, about 2000 new pediatric cancer cases are reported each year. The population in Turkey is relatively young. One fourth of the population is younger than 15 years of age. According to childhood mortality, cancer is the fourth cause of death (7.2%) after infections, cardia

This is a case report of a previously undescribed 20q chromosomal deletion (del(20q)) in marginal zone lymphoma (MZL). A 54-year-old Caucasian male presented with an enlarging neck mass and multiple violaceous skin nodules over his chest. Biopsy of the neck mass and cervical lymph nodes revealed MZL. Cytogenetic evaluation of both lymph node and bone marrow tissue revealed del(20q). This was an unexpected finding, as del(20q) is associated with myelodysplastic syndromes and myeloproliferative neoplasms and rarely seen in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, and T-cell lymphoma,

Congenital infantile fibrosarcoma (CIFS) is a rare mesenchymal tumor that primarily presents in the soft tissue of the distal extremities and occasionally in unusual locations such as the lung and retroperitoneum. Herein, we report seven cases of unusual presentations of CIFS. These cases include three in the lungs, one in the retroperitoneum with cord compression, one in the posterior trunk, one in the heart, and one infratemporal involving the sphenoid bone. All tumors demonstrated CIFS's characteristic t(12;15)(p13;q25) and associated ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion. One of the three lung cases was

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a slow-growing, locally invasive tumor of epithelial origin. The common sites of origin are the minor and major salivary glands and also the lacrimal glands. ACC accounts for 4.8% of primary orbital neoplasms and commonly arises superolaterally from the main lacrimal gland. Primary ACC of the orbit from an extra lacrimal region is quite rare. We present a case of ACC that occurred in ectopic lacrimal gland tissue involving the medial region of both orbits. A 74-year-old woman was admitted with a 4-week history of progressive painful proptosis in her left eye.

TET2 and DNMT3A mutations are frequently identified in T-cell lymphomas of T follicular helper cell origin (TCL-TFH), clonal hematopoiesis (CH), and myeloid neoplasms (MNs). The relationships among these 3 entities, however, are not well understood. We performed comprehensive genomic studies on paired bone marrow and tissue samples as well as on flow cytometry-sorted bone marrow and peripheral blood subpopulations from a cohort of 22 patients with TCL-TFH to identify shared CH-type mutations in various hematopoietic cell compartments. Identical mutations were detected in the neoplastic T-cell

Orbital plasmacytomas are uncommon soft-tissue plasma cell neoplasms that are associated with a monoclonal or myeloma protein. There are four types of plasma cell neoplasms: multiple myeloma (MM), monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), amyloidosis, and plasmacytoma. Plasmacytomas may be classified as medullary, occurring only within the bone, or extramedullary, occurring in soft tissues. Orbital plasmacytomas are extramedullary manifestations associated with MM and they may present with signs and symptoms such as unilateral proptosis, conjunctival injection, ocular pain, di

Juxtacortical or surface tumors of bone are neoplasms arising from or just outside the cortex, and are composed of different histologic types. Although the imaging appearances of these lesions have similarities to their intramedullary counterparts, their location alters their radiographic and MR characteristics, creating difficulties in diagnosis. Meanwhile, several non-neoplastic lesions, such as stress reaction/stress fracture and indolent infectious processes, compound the differential diagnosis. Neoplastic juxtacortical lesions of bone have been classified into five categories: cartilagino

While Ewing sarcoma is traditionally a malignant tumor of bone, it may uncommonly present extra-skeletally, leading to an array of puzzling presentations depending on the tissue involved. Here, we describe the case of a 66-year-old man who presented to the primary care office for evaluation of intermittent melena. He ultimately underwent capsule endoscopy and developed a secondary small bowel obstruction, unveiling his neoplasm. The tumor was then resected and managed with surveillance only, and the patient remains without evidence of disease after four years of follow-up.

Mastocytosis is a rare myeloid neoplasm characterized by abnormal proliferation and accumulation of mast cells in one or more organ systems including the skin, bone marrow, liver, spleen, lymph nodes and gastrointestinal tract. An infant presenting with bullous lesions is an even rarer clinical presentation of cutaneous mastocytosis. The symptoms and complications are mostly in proportion to the mast cell degranulation in tissues. Management is focused on preventing and treating this event. We report a three-month-old infant with bullous mastocytosis to enhance awareness about this rare diagno

Histiocytic sarcoma is a rare neoplasm, and its aetiology is unknown. It is a malignant proliferation of neoplastic cells showing immunophenotypic and morphologic features similar to tissue histiocytes. The clinical course of histiocytic sarcoma is usually agressive. The signs and symptoms of histiocytic sarcoma are systemic symptoms (fever, weight loss), hepatosplenomegaly, adenopathies, intestinal obstruction, rash and pancytopenia. We present the case of a 75 years old woman, with fever, weight loss, anorexia, fatigue, splenomegaly and pancytopenia. Bone marrow examination showed the diagno

Musculoskeletal complaints are a common reason for adolescents to seek medical attention. It is estimated that musculoskeletal problems account for up to 20% of visits to primary care practitioners. Many studies have shown the inadequacies of training of medical students and primary care residents in musculoskeletal medicine. Also, many practitioners do not feel comfortable in the management of common problems in this area. A general outline for approaching adolescents with musculoskeletal complaints is presented in this article and is not unlike the approach to other clinical problems. This o

OBJECTIVE: The authors report a case of mature teratoma of the middle ear in a 3-year-old girl with a 1-year history of otitis media.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Radiologic investigation revealed a partially cystic lesion of the petrous portion of the right temporal bone. It produced opacification of the middle ear as well as destruction of septal air cells. The patient underwent a subtotal petrosectomy. Histologically, the tumor was composed of an intimate admixture of mature tissues representing all three germ layers, including brain, myelinated nerve trunks, skeletal muscle, bone, immature cartil
