Fine-needle aspiration diagnosis of metastatic urothelial carcinoma: a review.

Urothelial carcinoma (UC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of the urinary tract. Metastases of UC are most common in the regional lymph nodes, lungs, liver, bone, and adrenal glands. Fine-needle aspiration cytology diagnosis of such metastases can be difficult, particularly in the setting of incomplete clinical history or when multiple primary neoplasms may be present. This review focuses on the cytologic features helpful in differentiating UC from its potential mimics, as well as ancillary studies that may be helpful in the distinction.

Plasmacytoma of the breast. A report of two cases diagnosed by aspiration biopsy.

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the breast is an uncommon neoplasm, occurring either as a solitary tumor or as evidence of disseminated multiple myeloma. CASE: Two cases of plasmacytoma of the breast were diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology. Aspiration smears showed a dispersed population of plasmacytoid cells with eccentric nuclei, abundant cytoplasm and the characteristic paranuclear hof. CONCLUSION: The clinical, cytologic and immunophenotypic features of plasmacytoma are characteristic, and the importance of distinguishing these neoplasms from primary mammary tumors i

[Bone and vascular gammagraphy in the study of primary bone neoplasms. Diagnostic value and monitoring of clinical course. Review of 50 cases].

Fifty patients with bone primary tumors (multiple myeloma, osteogenic sarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, giant cell tumor, and others) were studied gammagraphically after injecting 555 MBq of 99mTc-MDP. Eighty per cent of the cases were found in long bones, specially femur and tibia. These two bones were the preferent localization of osteosarcomas. Ewing's neoplasms were mostly diaphysial and osteoclastomas epiphysial.

Metachronous malignancies in head and neck region: report of two cases.

The development of a second primary cancer after treatment of the first with radiotherapy or chemotherapy is well documented. Multiple metachronous primary cancers are known to occur in an individual, but it is often seen with hematological malignancies of childhood. The prevalence of multiple primary malignancies (MPM) is between 0.73% and 11.7%. The most frequent malignant associations are ovary-colon, ovary-breast, and breast-breast. The possibility of developing a second metachronous cancer 5 years after undergoing treatment of the initial head and neck cancer is approximately 22%. Here, w

Eruptive disseminated Spitz nevi.

BACKGROUND: The solitary form of Spitz nevus is a common clinical entity in children, typically occurring on the face and extremities. However, less frequent variants of Spitz nevi, such as agminated forms and eruptive disseminated Spitz nevi (EDSN), have been described. The agminated form is characterised by localised clusters or segmental distribution of Spitz nevi on the face, back, or extremities. First described as "eruptive juvenile melanomata", EDSN is the rarest clinical variant, consisting of a widespread eruption of Spitz nevi, most frequently involving the trunk, buttocks, and proxi

Synchronous and Metachronous Malignancies After Malignant Struma Ovarii in the SEER Database.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Second primary tumors (SPTs) often occur, either synchronous or metachronous. Struma ovarii is a rare ovarian tumor represented by thyroid tissue in the ovary. Among other factors, production of thyroid hormones by the tumor or a shared genetic predisposition can further influence the development of SPTs. The occurrence of SPT, either synchronous or metachronous, following a long follow-up, has never been considered extensively. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 1973 to 2011 to follow-up all the cases of mali

[Multiple cerebral glioma or tumor dissemination via CSF pathways? Case report].

A case is presented of a 38-year-old female patient who developed bifocal metachronous cerebral glioma with the same histological appearance (glioblastoma multiforme). Two separate tumors were operated on within six months: the first one was localized in the left parieto-occipital area, and the other in the right temporal lobe. The tumor cells dissemination occurred probably via the CSF pathways: during the first operation the posterior horn of the left lateral ventricle was opened, and the second neoplastic lesion was situated also in the direct vicinity of CSF spaces (the Sylvian cistern). [Specifics of metabolic disorders in patients with "hormone-associated neoplastic" syndromes].

Overweight, lipidemia features, glucose tolerance and insulinemia were studied in 642 females suffering tumors of the corpus uteri, breast, ovary and large bowel, i.e. types of neoplasia which often occur and correspond to the syndrome of primary multiple "hormone-related" cancers. Beside certain obvious similarities in the said parameters established among patients with the said pathologies, the distinctions related, first of all, to degree of pernicious tumor process and, possibly, preoperative weight loss. Since no differences were found in manifestations of hormono-metabolic disturbances b

Primary extramedullary plasmacytoma: similarities with and differences from multiple myeloma revealed by interphase cytogenetics.

Primary extramedullary plasmacytoma is an indolent neoplasm that infrequently converts to multiple myeloma. Since cytogenetic data on extramedullary plasmacytoma are lacking, we studied 38 cases of this type of neoplasm by fluorescence in situ hybridization. Fourteen cases (37%) contained IGH breaks, including six with a t(4;14) translocation. No translocations t(11;14), t(14;16), t(8;14), nor breaks involving MALT1, BCL6 or FOXP1 were found. Loss of 13q (40%), as well as chromosomal gains (82%) were common. There was no correlation between chromosomal alterations and clinical features or loca

Primary carcinoid of the prostate in conjunction with multiple endocrine neoplasia IIb in a child.

Prostatic neoplasms are rare in childhood. We report a case of primary prostatic carcinoid in a 7-year-old boy who was subsequently diagnosed with multiple endocrine neoplasia IIb. To our knowledge this is the first report of either pediatric carcinoid of the prostate or of prostatic carcinoid in conjunction with neuronal intestinal dysplasia and medullary thyroid carcinoma suggestive of multiple endocrine neoplasia IIb. Management and histogenesis regarding this prostatic tumor are discussed as is a possible association with other neuroendocrine tumors.

Increase in the incidence of synchronous and metachronous peritoneal metastases in patients with colorectal cancer: A nationwide study.

INTRODUCTION: - To investigate the incidence of, factors associated with, and differences between synchronous and metachronous colorectal peritoneal metastases (CPM) in a population-based cohort. METHODS: - Data from the Netherlands Cancer Registry were used. All patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC) between 1 January and June 30, 2015 were evaluated for synchronous or metachronous CPM (diagnosis ≤90 or >90 days after surgery for primary CRC), and survival in 2019 (median follow-up 38.4 months). RESULTS: - Of 7233 included patients, 409 (5.7%) were diagnosed with synchronous CPM. F

Disseminated melanomatosis of the central nervous system and other organs: a case report.

This case represents an example of clinically occult, disseminated neoplastic disease with almost asymptomatic but severe involvement of the central nervous system. The only helpful diagnostic investigation appeared to be cerebrospinal fluid cytology. Extensive post mortem examination was inconclusive as to whether the widespread CNS involvement with melanoma was primary or secondary.

[About a case of primary laryngeal mucosal melanoma in a patient with medical history of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma].

INTRODUCTION: Primary laryngeal mucosal melanoma is a rare tumour with a poor prognosis. Its often difficult diagnosis should rule out laryngeal metastatic localization of cutaneous melanoma. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of primary laryngeal mucosal melanoma diagnosed in a 65-year-old man, treated 6 years previously with radio-chemotherapy and surgery for squamous cell carcinoma of the right lateral oropharyngeal region. The definitive diagnosis of primary laryngeal mucosal melanoma was made on the resection specimen, whereas the initial biopsy of the epilaryngeal mass discovered durin

Predicting clinical outcome in patients diagnosed with synchronous ovarian and endometrial cancer.

PURPOSE: Patients with synchronous ovarian and endometrial cancers may represent cases of a single primary tumor with metastasis (SPM) or dual primary tumors (DP). The diagnosis given will influence the patient's treatment and prognosis. Currently, a diagnosis of SPM or DP is made using histologic criteria, which are frequently unable to make a definitive diagnosis. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: In this study, we used genetic profiling to make a genetic diagnosis of SPM or DP in 90 patients with synchronous ovarian/endometrial cancers. We compared genetic diagnoses in these patients with the original

Multiple granular cell tumors of the gastrointestinal tract with subsequent development of esophageal squamous carcinoma.

A 52-year-old woman initially presented to our medical center with synchronous, submucosal tumors of the esophagus, stomach, and transverse colon. The gastric and colonic tumors were resected, and both displayed infiltrating sheets of polygonal cells with coarsely granular cytoplasm and small vesicular nuclei. The neoplastic cells of both tumors were immunoreactive for S-100 protein. Ultrastructural studies revealed the lysosomal nature of the cytoplasmic granules. Although the esophageal mass was not resected, it was felt that this represented another focus of granular cell tumor of the gastr

Primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumor with multiple liver metastases: A case report with review of the literature.

We herein present a case involving a 41-year-old woman in whom ultrasound examination revealed multiple liver hemangiomas more than 3 years ago. Follow-up ultrasound examination revealed that the masses had significantly increased; the largest was located in the right lobe (about 8.2 cm × 7.4 cm × 6.0 cm). Abdominal multidetector computed tomography revealed multiple well-circumscribed, heterogeneous, hypodense masses (largest, 6.4 cm × 6.3 cm × 5.0 cm) with significant contrast enhancement during the arterial and portal phases and with contrast wash-out and peripheral enhancement during the d

Primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the scalp: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Primary mucinous adenocarcinoma or mucinous eccrine carcinoma of the skin is a rare malignant neoplasm showing predilection to the head and neck. Distinguishing between these primary neoplasms and the more frequent metastatic mucinous deposits on the skin from primaries in the breast and gastrointestinal tract constitutes a diagnostic dilemma. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of a 61-year-old lady who presented with a slow-growing, painless scalp nodule. Upon excision, it was diagnosed as "primary mucinous adenocarcinoma". An extensive work-up in search for another primary

Endocrine neoplasms in familial syndromes of hyperparathyroidism.

Familial syndromes of hyperparathyroidism, including multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1), multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN2A), and the hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor (HPT-JT), comprise 2-5% of primary hyperparathyroidism cases. Familial syndromes of hyperparathyroidism are also associated with a range of endocrine and nonendocrine tumors, including potential malignancies. Complications of the associated neoplasms are the major causes of morbidities and mortalities in these familial syndromes, e.g., parathyroid carcinoma in HPT-JT syndrome; thymic, bronchial, and enteropancreatic

Secondary neoplasms of the small bowel.

Patterns of small bowel involvement from primary neoplasms elsewhere in the body were studied in order to determine whether the location of the lesions or their radiological appearance could provide criteria for distinguishing secondary from primary lesions. Multiplicity of lesions and the finding of "transverse stretch" were found to be highly indicative of secondary neoplastic involvement of the small bowel.
