Safety and outcomes of second-look percutaneous nephrolithotomy for complex renal stones: a retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Residual stones after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) remain a major clinical challenge, particularly in patients with large or complex calculi. Second-look PCNL offers a minimally invasive option for achieving complete stone clearance; however, realworld data on outcomes, timing, and predictive factors are limited. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 72 patients who underwent second-look mini-PCNL at a high-volume tertiary center. Perioperative parameters were compared between procedures and between stone-free and residual stone groups. Stone-free status was

Comparison of Ho:YAG and pTm:YAG lasers in mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy: safety, efficiency, and efficacy for lithotripsy.

BACKGROUND: While several in-vitro studies have compared the performance of Holmium:YAG and pulsed Thulium:YAG lasers, no studies to date have directly compared the performance of these lasers during mini- PCNL. Herein, we aimed to compare the clinical effectiveness and stone-free rates of Ho:YAG and pThulium:YAG lasers in patients undergoing mini-PCNL. METHODS: This prospective, non-randomized study included 264 patients who underwent mini-PCNL: 170 patients in the Ho:YAG group and 94 patients in the pTm:YAG group. Demographic characteristics, stone-related variables, and intraoperative and

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy for De Novo Urolithiasis After Kidney Transplantation: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Introduction and Objective: Renal transplantation is the treatment for end-stage renal disease that offers better quality of life and survival. Among the possible complications that might affect allografts, urolithiasis might have severe consequences, causing acute kidney injury (AKI) or septic events in immunocompromised patients. Allograft stones might be treated with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). The aim of this Cochrane style review was to assess the safety and efficacy of PCNL in patients with renal transplant. Methods: A comprehensive search in the literature was performed includi

A Rare Cause of Colon Perforation After Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy-A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Staghorn calculi pose challenges in urology, often necessitating more invasive procedures such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) to clear a large stone burden with fewer procedures. Here we present a case of a 76-year-old female with chronic kidney disease and a malrotated right pelvic kidney who underwent PCNL for a 3.5 cm staghorn calculus. Postoperatively, she developed a rare complication of ascending colon perforation, requiring emergent surgical intervention including exploratory laparotomy and right hemicolectomy. Colon perforation during PCNL is rare (0.3%-0.8%). Preoperative imag

The influencing factors of infectious complications after percutaneous nephrolithotomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Infection is the most common complications of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in treating urinary calculi. However, the risk factors for developing infectious complications after surgery have not been clarified, and the predictive value of some factors is controversial. This study aimed to assess the risk factors for postoperative infectious complications of PCNL. We performed a systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE to obtain studies reporting risk factors for postoperative infection complications after PCNL. In this review, demographic factors, laborato

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy and cystolithalapaxy for a "forgotten" stent in a transplant kidney: case report and literature review.

Ureteral stents, when left in situ in renal transplant patients, are a potential iatrogenic cause of graft compromise and graft failure. Such patients may present with acute renal failure, recurrent urinary tract infections, hematuria, and dysuria. We present a case report of a renal transplant patient with a heavily encrusted forgotten stent. We employed a simultaneous approach, using percutaneous nephrostolithotomy and cystolithalapaxy, for complete removal of the encrusted stent and associated stones. A MEDLINE literature review was then performed to identify and analyze similar cases in wh
