There is a lack of knowledge about which risk factors are more important in West Nile virus (WNV) transmission and risk magnitude. A better understanding of the risk factors is of great help in developing effective new technologies and appropriate prevention strategies for WNV infection. A contribution analysis of all risk factors in WNV infection would identify those major risk factors. Based on the identified major risk factors, measures to control WNV proliferation could be directed toward those significant risk factors, thus improving the effectiveness and efficiency in developing WNV cont

Huntington Disease (HD) is a degenerative neurological disease that causes a significant impact on the quality of life of the patient and eventually death. In this paper we present an approach to create a biomarker using as an input DNA CpG methylation data to identify HD patients. DNA CpG methylation is a well-known epigenetic marker for disease state. Technological advances have made it possible to quickly analyze hundreds of thousands of CpGs. This large amount of information might introduce noise as potentially not all DNA CpG methylation levels will be related to the presence of the illne

Brain stimulation (BStim) encompasses multiple modalities (e.g., deep brain stimulation, responsive neurostimulation) that utilize electrodes implanted in deep brain structures to treat neurological disorders. Currently, BStim is primarily used to treat movement disorders such as Parkinson's, though indications are expanding to include neuropsychiatric disorders like depression and schizophrenia. Traditional BStim systems are "open-loop" and deliver constant electrical stimulation based on manually-determined parameters. Advancements in BStim have enabled development of "closed-loop" systems t

Inconsistent evidence regarding the cognitive effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) highlights the need for more comprehensive approaches to assess its impact. This study aimed to investigate the effects of high-definition tDCS (HD-tDCS) on conflict resolution by combining behavioral, neural, and subjective experience measures. Sixty participants were randomly assigned to anodal, cathodal, or sham HD-tDCS groups and completed a 30-min flanker task. EEG was recorded during the first and last blocks (without stimulation), while stimulation was applied during the intermediate

Chronic stress is associated with persistent alterations in neural circuit function, yet how these changes are expressed across multiple descriptive levels remains unclear. Here, we re-analyzed in vivo GCaMP8s recordings from BLA-DMS and CeA-DMS projection pathways using complementary distributional, dynamical, and computational approaches. Distributional analyses based on Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence revealed stress-associated changes in the temporal organization of neural activity patterns, particularly following acute aversive perturbations where stressed animals exhibited prolonged dev

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Clustering methods are essential for analyzing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) time-series data to identify active brain regions and elucidate functional neural patterns. Despite recent advancements in enhancing the stability and automation of cluster number selection, many methods still rely on user-defined parameters, which complicates their application.
METHODS: To deal with these issues, this study introduces a novel parameter-free hierarchical topological structure learning clustering algorithm, Batch Learning Growing Neural Gas (BL-GNG), which buil

Dengue fever poses a formidable epidemiological challenge, particularly for vulnerable groups such as infants. This research paper establishes a mathematical model to describe the dynamics of secondary immunity in infants against dengue hemorrhagic fever, who acquired primary immunity through maternal antibodies. The effect of passive immunity in the form of dengue immunoglobulin is analyzed for high-risk patients for different scenarios, including standard dengue infections, host with pre-existing immunity, delayed diagnosis or treatment, and end-stage dengue cases. Convergence analysis of th

Many resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) studies have explored abnormal regional spontaneous brain activity in migraine. However, these results are inconsistent. To identify the consistent regions with abnormal neural activity, we meta-analyzed these studies. We gathered whole-brain rs-fMRI studies measuring differences in the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF), fractional ALFF (fALFF), or regional homogeneity (ReHo) methods. Then, we performed a voxel-wise meta-analysis to identify consistent abnormal neural activity in migraine by anisotropic effect size

No highly specific and sensitive biomarkers have been identified for early diagnosis of neural tube defects (NTDs). In this study, we used proteomics to identify novel proteins specific for NTDs. Our findings revealed three proteins showing differential expression during fetal development. In a rat model of NTDs, we used western blotting to quantify proteins in maternal serum exosomes on gestational days E18, E16, E14, and E12, in serum on E18 and E12, in neural tubes on E18 and E12, and in fetal neural exosomes on E18. The expression of coronin 1A and dynamin 2 was exosome-specific and associ

OBJECTIVE: Acoustic analysis of voice has the potential to expedite detection and diagnosis of voice disorders. Applying an image-based, neural-network approach to analyzing the acoustic signal may be an effective means for detecting and differentially diagnosing voice disorders. The purpose of this study is to provide a proof-of-concept that embedded data within human phonation can be accurately and efficiently decoded with deep learning neural network analysis to differentiate between normal and disordered voices.
METHODS: Acoustic recordings from 10 vocally-healthy speakers, as well as 70

Superresolution localization microscopy strongly relies on robust identification algorithms for accurate reconstruction of the biological systems it is used to measure. The fields of machine learning and computer vision have provided promising solutions for automated object identification, but usually rely on well represented training sets to learn object features. However, using a static training set can result in the learned identification algorithm making mistakes on data that is not well represented by the training set. Here, we present a method for training an artificial neural network wi

Humans and many animals can distinguish between stimuli that differ in numerosity, the number of objects in a set. Human and macaque parietal lobes contain neurons that respond to changes in stimulus numerosity. However, basic non-numerical visual features can affect neural responses to and perception of numerosity, and visual features often co-vary with numerosity. Therefore, it is debated whether numerosity or co-varying low-level visual features underlie neural and behavioral responses to numerosity. To test the hypothesis that non-numerical visual features underlie neural numerosity respon

BACKGROUND: In the absence of clinical folate deficiency, periconceptional supplementation with folic acid reduces a woman's risk of having an infant with a neural-tube defect. Since antiserum to folate receptors induces embryo resorption and malformations in rats, we hypothesized that autoantibodies against folate receptors in women may be associated with pregnancy complicated by a neural-tube defect.
METHODS: Serum from 12 women who were or had been pregnant with a fetus with a neural-tube defect and from 24 control women (20 with current or prior normal pregnancies and 4 who were nulligrav

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology behind spina bifida and other neural tube defects (NTDs) is unclear. Folic acid is one variable, but other factors remain. Studies suggest that substances active at the GABA receptor may produce NTDs. To test this hypothesis pregnant rats were exposed to either the GABA a agonist muscimol (1, 2 or 4 mg/kg), the GABA a antagonist bicuculline (.5, 1, or 2 mg/kg), the GABA b agonist baclofen (15, 30, 60 mg/kg), or the GABA b antagonist hydroxysaclofen (1, 3, or 5 mg/kg) during neural tube formation. Normal saline was used as a control and valproic acid (600 mg/kg)
