Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder that primarily affects the skin and the nervous system. This condition is called segmental NF1 (also called neurofibromatosis type V) when clinical features are limited to one area of the body. Segmental NF1 is generally thought to result from somatic mosaicism due to a postzygotic mutation in the NF1 gene, thus a test for NF1 gene abnormalities in peripheral blood is usually negative. Here we report a 31-year-old male presenting with epileptic seizures, who had a history of neurofibromas confirmed by biopsy, but lacked a fam

Isolated enophthalmos is a rarely observed entity in neurofibromatosis (NF). A 12-year-old male presented with right lower eyelid fat prolapse and enophthalmos for the past 7 years. There was no history of antecedent trauma/surgery. Computed tomography of orbit revealed an ill-defined intraconal hyperdense lesion located between lateral and inferior rectus along with an enlarged inferior orbital fissure (IOF). Superior orbital fissure was minimally widened without prolapse of any intracranial contents. Excision biopsy along with repair of widened IOF was performed through inferior transconjunc

Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) and neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) are characterized by an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance with irregular penetrance and a broad spectrum of different clinical phenotypes. There are large variations in the age of onset, progression and prognosis. Symptoms are often manifested early in childhood. Characteristics which the two main forms NF1 and NF2 have in common are a positive family history, characteristic skin alterations, such as café au lait macules, axillary or inguinal freckling and neural tumors such as neurofibroma and optic glioma (NF1) as well as (bilat

UNLABELLED: To report a case of segmental schwannomatosis involving the dorsal and lumbar spine and describe its excision as well as review of literature on schwannomatosis involving the spine.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Schwannomas are nerve sheath tumours which usually occur as solitary lesions. Presence of multiple schwannomas suggests a genetic predisposition to tumorogenesis and possible association with neurofibromatosis. However, in very rare cases multiple schwannomas exist without typical features of neurofibromatosis and constitute a clinically and genetically distinct rare syndrom

OBJECT: The significance of radiation in the induction of malignancy in vestibular schwannomas (VSs) after radiosurgery is unclear despite an increasing number of case reports. The authors describe a new case of verified malignant transformation in a vestibular schwannoma (MTVS) and provide a new evaluation of such cases previously reported in the literature.
METHODS: A 46-year-old woman underwent subtotal resection of a right-sided VS in 2004. The histological characteristics of the lesion were typical and benign. In early 2007 Gamma Knife surgery (GKS) was performed to treat a residual enla

We are presenting a familial schwannomatosis without the features of neurofibromatosis (NF). We retrospectively reviewed the hospital charts, radiology films, operative notes and pathology slides of the patient. There was a family history of schwannomatosis. The patient had contrast-enhanced MRI, which was negative for vestibular schwannomas. The patient underwent surgical excision of symptomatic lesions. Histopathology confirmed these lesions as schwannomas consisting of areas of Antoni A and B, and immunohistochemical study was positive for S-100 protein. We recommend surgery for symptomatic

Genetic factors play roles in many diseases. Often these factors are ill defined and unpredictable. Other diseases are caused by specific single gene mutations and are passed to offspring in Mendelian inheritance patterns. There are over 5000 documented Mendelian disorders; over 500 of these affect bones and joints. Some of these single gene disorders affect many tissues, and the skeletal system is one of many organ systems involved. The surgical pathologist must often diagnose these disorders. Important examples are neurofibromatosis, Gaucher's disease, and alkaptonuria. Other single gene dis

INTRODUCTION: A 71-year-old man consulted because he could not walk due to spots of hyperalgic, invalidating plantar keratodermia. A nearly identical symptomatology was observed in several members of the family suggesting an autosomal dominant hereditary disease due to painful callosities as described by Roth in 1978.
CASE REPORT: The patient had pachyonychia on all fingers and toes, only the ring fingers and the fifth toes were not involved. Multiple epidermoid follicular cysts were also found on the trunk suggesting the diagnosis of type II hereditary pachyonychia or Jackson-Lawler disease.

A 72-year-old patient with von Recklinghausen's disease showed akinetic mutism within 6 months of the onset of dementia. The findings of diffuse cerebral atrophy on CT and periodic synchronous discharges (PSDs) in EEG suggested Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. However, autopsy findings of diffuse softening of the subcortical white matter and marked arteriosclerotic changes of the subcortical arterioles with sparing of the cortex in the cerebrum confirmed a diagnosis of Binswanger's disease. Binswanger's disease should be included in the differential diagnosis of dementia showing PSDs in EEG.

An infant with neurofibromatosis developed recurrent cerebrovascular accidents beginning at 3 months of life. Cerebral arteriography demonstrated large-vessel occlusive disease and bilateral severe moyamoya. At autopsy these lesions were apparent on gross examination, and advanced intimal and medial dysplasia was seen on microscopic examination of both the anterior and posterior circulations. Although rare, neurofibromatosis cerebrovasculopathy may occur in young infants and may account for some strokes in this age group.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 2-related schwannomatosis is a genetic disease characterized by the development of bilateral vestibular schwannomas, ependymomas, meningiomas, and cataracts. Mild to profound hearing loss and tinnitus are common symptoms reported by individuals with neurofibromatosis type 2. While tinnitus is known to have a significant and negative impact on the quality of life of individuals from the general population, the impact on individuals with neurofibromatosis type 2 is unknown. Consensus regarding the selection of suitable patient-reported outcome measures for asse

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis (NF) is chronic neurogenetic condition that increases risk for poor quality of life, depression, and anxiety. Given the lack of biomedical treatments, we developed the "Relaxation Response Resiliency for NF" (3RP-NF) program to improve psychosocial outcomes among adults with NF.
OBJECTIVE: To move toward effectiveness testing, we must understand mechanisms that explained treatment effects. We tested whether our hypothesized mechanisms of change-mindfulness, coping, and optimism-mediated improvements in quality of life, depression, and anxiety among adults in th

Schwannomas are benign capsular tumors originating from Schwann cells. Although the majority are sporadic, they also occur within tumor predisposition syndromes, such as neurofibromatosis type 2, schwannomatosis, and Carney complex. Since the 5th edition of the World Health Organization(WHO)Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System was published, the description of grades has changed from Roman numerals to Arabic numerals. However, as in the 4th edition, it is still a WHO grade 1 benign tumor. There are several other subtypes of schwannomas in addition to the conventional type, an

Benign tumors that grow in the spinal canal are heterogeneous neoplasms with low incidence; from these, meningiomas and nerve sheath tumors (neurofibromas and schwannomas) account for 60%-70% of all primary spinal tumors. Benign spinal canal tumors provoke nonspecific clinical manifestations, mostly related to the affected level of the spinal cord. These tumors present a challenge for the patient and healthcare professionals, for they are often difficult to diagnose and the high frequency of posttreatment complications. In this review, we describe the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical featu
