Nevus comedonicus (NC) is a rare developmental anomaly of the folliculosebaceous apparatus, which appears as numerous dilated papules containing firm, darkly pigmented, horny plugs. It appears shortly after birth and mostly before the age of 10; however, late-onset cases have been reported. There is no gender or racial predilection. Moreover, NC can be a component of nevus comedonicus syndrome, a neurocutaneous disorder with skeletal, ocular, and central nervous system abnormalities. EHK properties in NC are not a common finding and are rarely seen in association with each other. This paper re

Congenital melanocytic nevi are cutaneous malformations present at birth, resulting from a benign proliferation of melanocytes. Although generally benign, they can have significant psychological impacts and carry a non-negligible risk of progression to malignant melanoma. We report a case of a giant congenital melanocytic nevus associated with a perianal mass in an infant, two and half-month-old infant, with no notable medical history, born at term. He was referred for a pigmented perianal swelling located on a large hyperpigmented plaque covering the lower back, buttocks, perineum, external g

PURPOSE: To report a case of presumed choroidal nevus that eventually grew into melanoma in a patient with family history of choroidal melanoma and germline BAP1 mutation.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 55-year-old healthy white woman with a family history of uveal melanoma in her father, paternal aunt, and paternal cousin was referred for evaluation of an asymptomatic small pigmented choroidal lesion in her right eye, measuring 2 mm × 2 mm in basal diameter and 1 mm in thickness. There were no clinical risk factors. The patient was advised routine monitoring but returned 4 years later wit

In recent years, dermatoscopy has emerged as a valuable adjunctive tool for the diagnosis of various cutaneous disorders. Initially developed for the evaluation of melanocytic lesions, this non-invasive technique has since demonstrated significant utility in the assessment of non-melanocytic hyperpigmented dermatoses. This review provides an up-to-date and practical overview of the dermatoscopic manifestations of common non-melanocytic hyperpigmented conditions, including melasma, nevus of Ota, freckles, lentigines, solar lentigines, seborrheic keratosis, porokeratosis, acquired dermal macular

Amelanotic melanoma (AMM) presenting as pyogenic granuloma and occurring in the vicinity of acquired melanocytic nevi is rare. Herein, we report such a manifestation in a 68-year-old male who presented with the painful red nodule and multiple pigmented patches involving the left great toe. Histopathological examination of skin biopsy taken from the nodule with an immunohistochemical study using HMB45 and S-100 confirmed the diagnosis of AMM. Biopsy from the pigmented patch near the nodule showed features of melanocytic nevus. Investigative work up revealed metastatic deposits in the left ingui

We report a clinical and histologic study of 70 patients, each with a single melanocytic lesion termed "deep penetrating nevus" (DPN). The lesions are most commonly found on the face, upper trunk, or proximal extremities of patients between the ages of 10 and 30 years. Typically they are darkly pigmented. Histologically they are characterized by loosely organized nests of pleomorphic pigmented cells that penetrate deep into the reticular dermis and often to the subcutaneous fat. Follow-up was obtained from 48 patients. It ranged from 1 to 23 years (mean, 7 years). Despite an initial histologic

Epidermal nevus syndrome is a rare congenital disorder affecting only a few hundred people in the world. It has ophthalmic, dermatological, and neurological manifestations, with varied presentation. Here, we report a case of two-year-old child who presented with epibulbar mass in left eye, pigmented nevi over left side of the body and alopecia over left side of parieto-temporal scalp. Imaging confirmed epibulbar mass and presence of calcification of choroid on ipsilateral side with presence of arachnoid cyst of brain with underlying pachygyria. Neurological examination was normal and dermatolo

A 29-year-old woman presented with dark-colored raised lesions on both eyelids since early childhood. Ophthalmological examination revealed pigmented verrucous lesions on her upper and lower eyelids bilaterally. The patient had a history of generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Dermatological examination revealed hyperpigmented verrucous plaques arranged along lines of Blaschko on the neck, trunk, and arms. On the basis of these findings, the diagnosis of epidermal nevus syndrome (ENS) was made. She had surgery for debulking of the lesions. Histological analysis revealed hyperkeratosis with foci

Distinguishing benign from malignant melanocytic lesions is an on-going challenge for the clinician and the histopathologist. The regrowth of benign melanocytic nevi at the dermoepidermal junction following inadequate excision has been shown to be confused with superficial spreading melanoma. The dysplastic nevus has atypical features in and of itself, which become even more compounded when the lesion recurs in the dermoepidermal junction following inadequate resection by shave excision. The use of Monsel's solution to achieve hemostasis at the biopsy site can itself also produce a clinically

The eyes of a 51-year-old woman with familial adenomatous polyposis and extracolonic manifestations (Gardner's syndrome) were obtained postmortem and studied by light microscopy and by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. We found a generalized abnormality in melanogenesis of the retinal pigment epithelium and at least three types of pigmented lesions. The histologic findings in one type of lesion were consistent with congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium or benign pigmented nevus of the retinal pigment epithelium. The other two types of lesion were most consistent

Pediatric melanoma is rare but increasing in incidence. Because early diagnosis and treatment improves prognosis, clinicians need to include it as a possible diagnosis when evaluating a pigmented lesion in a pediatric patient. Some risk factors for melanoma include xeroderma pigmentosum, giant congenital melanocytic nevi, dysplastic nevus syndrome, atypical nevi, many acquired melanocytic nevi, family history of melanoma, and immunosuppression. Definitive treatment is with surgical excision. Adjuvant therapies such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiation therapy can be used in advanced c

An eccrine nevus is a rare hamartoma characterized by an increase in the number or size of eccrine glands. Eccrine nevi usually present as localized hyperhidrosis and are not associated with overlying skin abnormalities. However, among the cases that have been reported in the literature, some unique presentations of eccrine nevi have been demonstrated, including a pigmented patch, a depressed nodule, linear papules, and a sacral skin tag. Herein, we report two unusual cases of coccygeal polypoid eccrine nevi and review the literature.

We report a case of speckled lentiginous nevus with extensive unilateral distribution in a 53-year-old man. The lesions involved the left back, extending from the midline anteriorly to the thorax, arm, and forearm. The background pigmentary patch covered only the back and upper arm. Histologic examination revealed a lentiginous pattern as well as a congenital nevocytic pattern, even in the areas where the background was nontanned skin. This combined clinical pattern in the same patient fits the descriptions for both the usual and unusual speckled lentiginous nevus. Cases with variants of exten

The prevalence of congenital-nevus-like nevi (CNLN) in a group of 105 adults who had malignant melanoma (MM) was compared with that in a control group of 601 adults not afflicted by MM. Total cutaneous examinations were performed on both groups. The control group presented with complaints other than pigmented lesions. In this series, 10 (9.5%) of the group with MM had clinically diagnosed CNLN 1.5 cm or larger in diameter. These CNLN were not in contiguity with the MM sites. The 9.5% prevalence of CNLN in the group with MM was significantly higher (p less than 0.005) than the 2.5% CNLN observe

UNLABELLED: Considering the similarity in clinical presentations of iris neoplasms of various origins, questions of their noninvasive diagnosis remain relevant. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) is one of the imaging method that enables visualization of tumor vessels.
PURPOSE: This article examines the features of angioarchitecture, vascular network density, and perfusion density of iris melanoma and progressive iris nevus using OCT-A.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 67 patients with iris neoplasms were examined between 2021 and 2023. Group 1 included 29 patients with progres

Digital dermatoscopy, a noninvasive auxiliary method that can improve the diagnosis of nearly all pigment skin lesions, was used to study 6 cases of tinea nigra, a rare dematiaceous superficial fungal infection and a potential mimicker of melanocytic nevus. Patients were first evaluated by a manual dermatoscope using a 10-fold magnification. The same patients were then reevaluated using a digital dermatoscope with 20-, 50-, and 70-fold magnifications. Direct mycologic examination and culture supported the establishment of the etiologic diagnosis. All reported cases showed a single dermatoscopi

A clinical diagnosis of lentigo maligna at an early stage is often difficult even for experienced dermatologists. Differential diagnoses would include solar lentigo, early lesions of seborrheic keratosis, lichen planus-like keratosis, pigmented actinic keratosis and melanocytic nevus. Dermoscopy has been shown to have higher diagnostic accuracy, especially in the diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions, in the past two decades. To aim of the present study was to review the diagnostic key points on dermoscopy in the published work to differentiate lentigo maligna from other differential diagnoses a

We present a case of SCALP syndrome, which was diagnosed in a male infant with the characteristic findings of sebaceous nevi, central nervous system malformations, aplasia cutis congenita, limbal dermoid, and giant congenital melanocytic nevi, or pigmented nevi. We identified a germline compound heterozygous DOCK6 mutation and a somatic mosaic NRAS Q61R mutation in the giant congenital melanocytic nevus. This report will increase clinician awareness of SCALP syndrome and augment the literature in characterizing this rare syndrome, including its genetic background.

Congenital ocular melanocytosis (COM) is an extremely rare melanocytic hyperplasia (0.038% in Caucasian population); it affects episclera and sclera. The conjunctival epithelium is not affected, as opposed to conjunctival melanosis. The pigmentation is grayish-blue and its consistency with the underlying tissues as the conjunctiva moves (deep pigmentation) is an essential diagnostic clue. COM may be isolated or associated with facial pigmentation, in the area innervated by the trigeminal nerve--known as oculodermal melanocytosis or nevus of Ota. COM may associate the following findings: iris h
