Immobilized anthraquinone-2-sulfonate enhances hydroxylamine-induced partial nitrification-endogenous denitrification and phosphorus removal: Electron-transfer and multi-omics mechanisms.

Hydroxylamine-driven partial nitrification lowers oxygen and carbon demand, but the resulting nitrite accumulation and free nitrous acid (FNA) stress constrain endogenous denitrification (EnD) and denitrifying phosphorus removal (DPR). Here, immobilized anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) was used to overcome this electron-transfer bottleneck in three SPNEDPR biofilm reactors containing unmodified carriers or AQS-modified carriers at 0.29 and 0.51 mmol/L. At an influent C/N ratio of 3.05 ± 0.11, 0.51 mmol/L AQS achieved stable removal efficiencies of 98.99 ± 1.28% for total inorganic nitrogen (TIN

Fe3+/Fe2+ cycling drove novel ammonia oxidation and simultaneously removed lead, cadmium, and copper.

The discharge of several pollutants, such as ammonia (NH4+-N), nitrate (NO3--N), and heavy metals, from aquaculture wastewater into the aquatic environment can cause severe pollution issues. In this work, microbial techniques were employed to enable concurrent elimination of NH4+-N and NO3--N by Fe3+/Fe2+ cycling. The greatest NH4+-N and NO3--N removal efficiencies of 96.1 % and 97.6 % were gained by Aquabacterium sp. XL4 at NH4+/NO3- ratio of 1:1, carbon to nitrogen ratio of 4.0, pH of 6.5, and Fe3+ dosage of 20.0 mg L-1. Inhibitor and nitrogen balance assays suggested that nitrogen removal p

Leaf litter chemistry and its effects on soil microorganisms in different ages of Zanthoxylum planispinum var. Dintanensis.

BACKGROUND: Leaf litter is the products of metabolism during the growth and development of plantation, and it is also an important component of nutrient cycling in plantation ecosystems. However, leaf litter chemistry and its effects on soil microorganisms in different ages, as well as the interactions between chemical components in leaf litter have been rarely reported. Based on this, this paper took Zanthoxylum planispinum var. dintanensis (hereafter Z. planispinum) plantations of 5-7, 10-12, 20-22, and 28-32 years old as the objects. By using one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis and

Utilization of Legume-Nodule Bacterial Symbiosis in Phytoremediation of Heavy Metal-Contaminated Soils.

With the increasing industrial activity of the growing human population, the accumulation of various contaminants in soil, including heavy metals, has increased rapidly. Heavy metals as non-biodegradable elements persist in the soil environment and may pollute crop plants, further accumulating in the human body causing serious conditions. Hence, phytoremediation of land contamination as an environmental restoration technology is desirable for both human health and broad-sense ecology. Legumes (Fabaceae), which play a special role in nitrogen cycling, are dominant plants in contaminated areas.

Control of alcoholic fermentation through modulation of nitrogen metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae sake strains exhibit high alcoholic fermentation performance. Comparative transcriptomic analysis revealed that the expression of genes required for nitrogen sensing and metabolism, including amino acid biosynthesis and uptake, was markedly lower in the sake strain than in the laboratory strain. Thus, we hypothesized that changes in nitrogen metabolism affect the fermentation capability of S. cerevisiae. To evaluate the impact of altered nitrogen metabolism on alcoholic fermentation, we focused on the transcription activators Gcn4p, Gln3p, and Gat1p, and the protein ki

Microbial diversity and functional analysis in wastewater and sludge of wastewater treatment plants.

BACKGROUND: The efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) relies heavily on microbial communities. However, the microbial characteristics of different treatment units in the Qian'an WWTP (Hebei, China) remain unclear. This study investigates its microbial diversity and functions to provide a basis for process optimization. METHODS: Samples were collected in October 2024 from four representative units were selected: sludge (group A), sedimentation tank water (group C), aeration tank water (group E), and raw wastewater (group F). Bacterial and fungal communities were analyzed via Illumi

Metformin Inhibits the Urea Cycle and Reduces Putrescine Generation in Colorectal Cancer Cell Lines.

The urea cycle (UC) removes the excess nitrogen and ammonia generated by nitrogen-containing compound composites or protein breakdown in the human body. Research has shown that changes in UC enzymes are not only related to tumorigenesis and tumor development but also associated with poor survival in hepatocellular, breast, and colorectal cancers (CRC), etc. Cytoplasmic ornithine, the intermediate product of the urea cycle, is a specific substrate for ornithine decarboxylase (ODC, also known as ODC1) for the production of putrescine and is required for tumor growth. Polyamines (spermidine, sper

Impaired nitrogenous waste clearance promotes hepatocellular carcinoma.

In mammals, hepatic urea cycle enzymes (UCEs) convert ammonia, the toxic nitrogenous waste, into urea for excretion. In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), UCE expression is often heterogeneously repressed, but its role in tumorigenesis is unclear. We show that, as in patients, UCE expression is markedly reduced in multiple HCC mouse models, including those driven by oncogenic c-MET/β-catenin, leading to impaired ammonia clearance, altered amino acid metabolism, and increased pyrimidine synthesis. In contrast, UCE expression is largely preserved in c-MET/sgAxin1 tumors, allowing assessment of the

Efficiently intensified nitrogen transformation in electrolysis-integrated constructed wetlands: Comparative performance and mechanism.

This study developed constructed wetlands (CWs) with direct current (DC) electrolysis and iron-carbon (IC) microelectrolysis. Ammonium removal was more significantly enhanced with IC by 12.7-27.3 %, while the promotion of DC only existed with lower voltage. DC electrolysis continuously promoted nitrate conversion by 5.7-13.3 % compared to the control. Total nitrogen removal was 75.0-92.7 % and 85.4-93.4 % with DC and IC electrolysis, respectively limited by ammonium and nitrite accumulation. Bioelectrolysis enriched nitrifying bacteria such as Ellin6067, Nitrospira, and Nitrosomonas. Moreover,

Effects of freeze-thaw cycles on the quality and flavor profiles of stir-fried ZhiJiang duck.

To investigate the effects of four freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles on the quality, protein properties, and volatile flavor compounds of stir-fried Zhijiang duck meat, providing a scientific basis for mitigating deterioration. The results indicated that the pH value, water-holding capacity, chewiness, and total sulfhydryl content decreased significantly with more F-T cycles. Conversely, the content of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), acid content, carbonyl content, and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) increased significantly with increasing F-T cycles. After 3 cycles, TVB-N reache

Gene expression during the formation of resting spores induced by nitrogen starvation in the marine diatom Chaetoceros socialis.

BACKGROUND: Dormancy is widespread in both multicellular and unicellular organisms. Among diatoms, unicellular microalgae at the base of all aquatic food webs, several species produce dormant cells (spores or resting cells) that can withstand long periods of adverse environmental conditions. RESULTS: We present the first gene expression study during the process of spore formation induced by nitrogen depletion in the marine planktonic diatom Chaetoceros socialis. In this condition, genes related to photosynthesis and nitrate assimilation, including high-affinity nitrate transporters (NTRs), we

Hemodialysis for hyperammonemia associated with ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency.

Acute hyperammonemia is a medical emergency requiring rapid recognition and treatment to prevent devastating neurologic sequelae. Its varying etiologies include primary hepatic failure, drug toxicity, infection, and inherited disorders of metabolism. Ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency is the most common inherited urea cycle disorder and can result in hyperammonemic encephalopathy and coma, often presenting in the newborn or early childhood. Partial deficiencies of the enzyme can present later in adulthood with protean neuropsychiatric signs and symptoms. Early recognition and manageme

Three cases of intravenous sodium benzoate and sodium phenylacetate toxicity occurring in the treatment of acute hyperammonaemia.

Intravenous sodium benzoate and sodium phenylacetate have been used successfully in the treatment of acute hyperammonaemia in patients with urea cycle disorders. They provide alternative pathways for waste nitrogen disposal and help maintain nitrogen homeostasis. However, we report three patients with hyperammonaemia who received inappropriate doses of intravenous sodium benzoate and sodium phenylacetate that resulted in severe complications. Ambiguous medical prescriptions and inadequate cross-checking of drug dosage by physicians, nurses and pharmacists were the main causes of these incident

First-Principles Framework for the Prediction of Intersystem Crossing Rates in Spin Defects: The Role of Electron Correlation.

Optically active spin defects in solids are promising platforms for quantum technologies. Here, we present a first-principles framework to investigate intersystem crossing processes, which represent crucial steps in the optical spin-polarization cycle used to address spin defects. Considering the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond as a case study, we demonstrate that our framework effectively captures electron correlation effects in the calculation of many-body electronic states and their spin-orbit coupling and electron-phonon interactions, while systematically addressing finite-size effects.

Acrodermatitis enteropathica-like dermatosis associated with ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency.

The urea cycle is the major metabolic pathway for excretion of waste nitrogen. Ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency is the most frequent urea cycle disorder. It is a hereditary-X-linked disease with over 150 mutations described. Ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency causes vomiting, lethargy, hyperventilation, and even death, mainly in the neonatal period. Ammonia, an extremely toxic molecule for the organism, is generated during protein catabolism and is accumulated in patients with this deficiency. Part of the treatment consists of a low-protein diet, to avoid hyperammonemia episodes, which

[Effects of root exudates C:N on soil physical and chemical characteristics and soil respiration in Robinia pseudoacacia plantation].

We explored the effects of C:N ratio in root exudates of Robinia pseudoacacia plantations on soil nutrient cycling and microbial activity on the Loess Plateau. We collected in-situ soil from the R. pseudoacacia plantations with essentially identical habitat conditions and growing time of 15, 25, 35, and 45 years. By adding root exudates with different C:N ratios (N only, C:N=10, C:N=50, C:N=100, C only) to the soil and using deionized water as a control, we analyzed the effects of C:N ratio of root exudates on the physicochemical properties of elements such as carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus,

Cell-cycle dynamics in cnidarian-dinoflagellate symbioses.

The eukaryotic cell cycle is an evolutionarily conserved process that underpins cell division and growth in multicellular and unicellular organisms alike. The regulation of cell cycles of the partners in an endosymbiosis is complex, wherein coordinated growth is central to the maintenance of biomass homeostasis. Imbalanced growth can result in the starvation of one or both partners, the loss of immune tolerance, and the subsequent collapse of the symbiosis. The cnidarian-dinoflagellate symbiosis is an intracellular partnership where unicellular dinoflagellate symbionts reside within cnidarian

Mechanistic studies of NOx reduction reactions involving copper complexes: encouragement of DFT calculations.

The reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx), which is mainly mediated by metalloenzymes and metal complexes, is a critical process in the nitrogen cycle and environmental remediation. This Frontier article highlights the importance of density functional theory (DFT) calculations to gain mechanistic insights into nitrite (NO2-) and nitric oxide (NO) reduction reactions facilitated by copper complexes by focusing on two key processes: the reduction of NO2- to NO by a monocopper complex, with special emphasis on the concerted proton-electron transfer, and the reduction of NO to N2O by a dicopper compl

Optimizing intermittent rotary aeration to enhance efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions during fish manure composting.

The treatment of fish manure from industrial recirculating aquaculture systems (IRAS) is challenging due to its low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio and poor separability. This study investigated the optimization of composting efficiency and greenhouse gas mitigation for such manure using a rotating-bin system. A self-developed concentration technique was employed to obtain the feedstock, which was composted under varying rotational aeration frequencies. We comprehensively assessed the process by analyzing physicochemical parameters, product maturity, gas emissions (N2O, CH4, NH3, CO2), and micr
