OBJECTIVES: To describe the nutritional status in older adults and its association with sociodemographic characteristics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Sampling was probabilistic, stratifi and multistage. Nutritional status was assessed by body mass index (BMI) according to the classifi of nutritional status for the elderly from the Ministry of Health of Peru. BACKGROUND: There are few studies in the Czech Republic describing and evaluating the nutritional status of institutionalized elderly.
METHODS: Data were collected from 659 women and 156 men aged 65 years and older and living in retirement homes in and around Prague. Data included: a Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA questionnaire), anthropometric measurements and biochemical evaluations.

Ovulatory dysfunction is common in patients with eating disorders. However, many women engage in pathologic dieting behaviors without meeting the current diagnostic criteria for anorexia or bulimia nervosa. Workers aged 30-39 years engaged in the instrument-making industry were followed up during spring season. Their energy expenditure, actual nutrition and providing with vitamins were studied. The data obtained were correlated with the level of their total physical working capacity (TPWC). A significant imbalance in their rations was revealed with respect to the main food substances, trace elements and vitamins. The nutritional status of 41 male patients with carcinoma of the stomach was recorded, right after admission to hospital, and was related to tumour-specific operability. The nutritional condition of most of the patients was moderately impaired. Significant differences between operable and non-operable patients were recorded from the following parameters: upper-arm circumference, haemoglobin concentration, serum albumin, pseudocholinesterase, intradermal testing, E-rosette count. The findings thus obtained provided some limited information on operability.

Riboflavin nutritional status was assessed on the basis of activity coefficients of glutathione reductase in erythrocyte hemolysates of normal and streptozotocin-diabetic rats. Activity coefficient values higher than 1.3 were regarded as evidence of riboflavin deficiency.
