Radiographic characteristics of canine subungual keratoacanthoma.

Subungual keratoacanthoma (SKA) is a rare benign nail bed tumor in dogs, and its radiographic characteristics have not been reported based on the authors' review of the literature. The purpose of this multicenter, retrospective, observational, descriptive study was to describe the radiographic features of SKA in dogs. Twelve dogs for a total of 12 digits with histologically confirmed SKA met the inclusion criteria. The radiographs of the manus or pes were reviewed by two veterinary radiologists and one veterinarian. The radiology reports were interpreted based on a consensus. In six dogs, ther

Prophylactic Acid-suppression Medication to Prevent Anastomotic Strictures After Oesophageal Atresia Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anastomotic stricture is a common postoperative complication of oesophageal atresia ± tracheoesophageal fistula (OA/TOF) repair. Acid gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is considered to be a factor in stricture formation and acid suppression medication is recommended post-operatively in consensus guidance. We aimed to investigate whether patients who were treated prophylactically with acid suppression medication had a reduced incidence of strictures compared to those who did not receive it. METHODS: A systematic review of studies was performed, searching multiple databases w

Biological mechanisms implicated in adverse outcomes of sex mismatched transfusions.

Transfusion of red cell concentrates is an essential lifesaving treatment for patients with massive bleeding or red blood cell disorders. However, correlations between blood transfusion from female donors, especially in sex mismatched transfusions, and a risk of mortality has been reported. A systematic understanding of how sex-mismatched transfusion can contribute to negative outcomes is still lacking. Here, we propose that variations in stored red blood cell products from female and male blood donors may be related to different characteristics of subpopulations of RBCs in units. As very litt

The Gut Microbiome and Sex Hormone-Related Diseases.

The role of the gut microbiome has been a hot topic in recent years. One aim of this review is to shed light on the crosstalk between sex hormones and the gut microbiome. Researchers have observed a sex bias of the composition of the gut microbiome in mice and have proved that sex differences influence the composition of the gut microbiome, although the influence is usually obscured by genetic variations. Via cell studies, animal studies and some observational studies in humans, researchers have confirmed that the gut microbiome can be shaped by the hormonal environment. On other hand, some th

Insights into the Cardiac Phenotype in 9p Deletion Syndrome: A Multicenter Italian Experience and Literature Review.

Chromosome 9p deletion syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder presenting with a broad spectrum of clinical features, including congenital heart defects (CHDs). To date, studies focused on a deep characterization of cardiac phenotype and function associated with this condition are lacking. We conducted a multicentric prospective observational study on a cohort of 10 patients with a molecular diagnosis of 9p deletion syndrome, providing a complete cardiological assessment through conventional echocardiography and tissue Doppler imaging echo modality. As a result, we were able to demonstr

Vitamin D and depression in older adults: lessons learned from observational and clinical studies.

Depression is a mental disorder triggered by the interaction of social, psychological and biological factors that have an important impact on an individual's life. Despite being a well-studied disease with several established forms of treatment, its prevalence is increasing, especially among older adults. New forms of treatment and prevention are encouraged, and some researchers have been discussing the effects of vitamin D (VitD) on depression; however, the exact mechanism by which VitD exerts its effects is not yet conclusive. In this study, we aimed to discuss the possible mechanisms underl

Duration and determinants of Chagas latency: an etiology and risk systematic review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this systematic review is to explore and discuss the latency duration among asymptomatic people with chronic Chagas disease. INTRODUCTION: Studies estimate the latency period of Chagas disease to be approximately 10-30 years. However, new findings may indicate that this latency period is shorter and depends on the presence of clinical factors. This systematic review protocol will explore the duration and factors affecting this latency period to inform treatment, with the potential of improving outcomes. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Eligible studies will include asymptomati

Post-stroke pathway analysis and link with one year sequelae in a French cohort of stroke patients: the PAPASePA protocol study.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a health problem with serious consequences, both in terms of mortality, and after-effects affecting patient quality of life. Stroke requires both urgent and chronic management involving the entire health care system. Although large variability in the management of stroke patients have been noticed, knowledge of the diversity and the scalability of post-stroke pathways, whether it is the care pathway or the life pathway, is currently not sufficient. Moreover the link between post-stroke pathways and patients sequelae have not been yet clearly defined. All this information

Study of the impact of the inclusion of global pain and functional capacity assessment in the definition of remission and its maintenance for rheumatoid arthritis. Aims and methodology.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The SUMAR project established a definition for remission that includes the patient's perspective (global assessment of pain and HAQ) in the definition of remission in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This new definition needs to be assessed on clinical practice. The main objective of the RA-Remission study is to estimate the proportion of patients in sustained remission according to SUMAR definition through 2-year follow-up, among patients in SUMAR remission at baseline. This manuscript describes the objectives and methodology of the study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a

Global incidence of incomplete surgical excision in adult patients with non-melanoma skin cancer: study protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Non-melanoma skin cancer, which includes basal cell carcinoma and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, is the commonest malignancy worldwide. The mainstay of treatment is surgical excision. Despite this being an exceptionally common procedure, it is not known what the accepted standard is for incomplete excision. Multiple single-centre, regional and national studies have previously reported their incidence of incomplete excision in isolation. Furthermore, is it not known what effect potential risk factors such as the operating group, location of lesions, type of reconstruction, histo
