Ocular complications of perioperative anesthesia: a review.

Ocular complications associated with anesthesia in ocular and non-ocular surgeries are rare adverse events which may present with clinical presentations vacillating between easily treatable corneal abrasions to more serious complication such as irreversible bilateral vision loss. In this review, we outline the different techniques of anesthetic delivery in ocular surgeries and highlight the incidence and etiologies of associated injuries. The changes in vision in non-ocular surgeries are mistaken for residual sedation or anesthetics, therefore require high clinical suspicion on part of the tre

[Advertising or information in ophthalmology? : Scientific evaluation of a YouTube sample].

BACKGROUND: Despite the liberalization of the Therapeutic Products Advertising Act, advertising that praises, misleads or compares is still contrary to the German professional conduct. In view of the increasing commitment of financial investors and the economization in ophthalmology, this study was initiated to examine and check which (advertising) statements are affected in openly accessible videos on the YouTube platform. METHODS: Using the search terms "ophthalmologist" and "eye center" as well as predefined criteria (German origin, audio track with spoken text, duration >1 min), videos we

Artificial Intelligence in Cornea, Refractive Surgery, and Cataract: Basic Principles, Clinical Applications, and Future Directions.

Corneal diseases, uncorrected refractive errors, and cataract represent the major causes of blindness globally. The number of refractive surgeries, either cornea- or lens-based, is also on the rise as the demand for perfect vision continues to increase. With the recent advancement and potential promises of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies demonstrated in the realm of ophthalmology, particularly retinal diseases and glaucoma, AI researchers and clinicians are now channeling their focus toward the less explored ophthalmic areas related to the anterior segment of the eye. Conditions that

Recurrence rate with inferior conjunctival autograft transplantation compared with superior conjunctival autograft transplantation in pterygium surgery: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Conjunctival autograft transplantation from superior conjunctiva is often chosen to lower the postoperative recurrence rate for pterygium treatment. However, inferior conjunctival autograft (ICA) might be taken as an alternative surgery method, especially under certain conditions. Consequently, we designed this research to estimate and contrast the result of inferior conjunctival autograft and superior conjunctival autograft (SCA) on the postoperative recurrence rate. METHODS: We searched through network database (PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials)

Pterygium surgery by double-sliding flaps procedure: Comparison between primary and recurrent pterygia.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the surgical outcomes of pterygial excision for primary and recurrent pterygia by a single method of pterygia excision combined with two conjunctival flaps. METHODS: This retrospective study divided 193 cases of pterygium into the primary (140 cases) and recurrent (53 cases) pterygium groups. Following double-sliding conjunctival transposition flap operation and surgical excision of the pterygium, the success and recurrence rates of pterygial surgery were assessed based on visual acuity and corneal and total astigmatism during follow-up at least 6 months.

Advances in Corneal Surgical and Pharmacological Approaches to the Treatment of Presbyopia.

The purpose of this article is to review the current status of presbyopia amelioration with surgical and pharmacologic procedures that partially compensate for loss of accommodation in advance of cataract surgery and lens replacement. Over the last few years, several corneal surgical and topical pharmacological approaches for the treatment of presbyopia have been introduced to the marketplace or are in the developmental pipeline. The approaches vary in invasiveness, duration of effect, reversibility, risk/benefit ratio, and clinical results. The advantages and disadvantages for each are discus

[Surgical approaches of tumors of the posterior cone of the orbit].

The surgical management of posterior orbital tumors is complex because it is an anatomical area located at the borders between the face and the skull base. The goal of the procedures carried-out in this area is to resect the tumor while preserving vision by using the safest possible approach. The aim of our work was to determine, in the light of our experience and of a review of the literature, the advantages and drawbacks of the numerous approaches described.

A Novel Technique for Amniotic Membrane Transplantation in Patients with Acute Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

Cryopreserved amniotic membrane (AM) transplantation is an emerging technique that is becoming the gold standard for the management of acute Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and its more severe variant, toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). We describe a novel surgical technique utilizing a single, large sheet of AM (5 x 10 cm) and a custom-made forniceal ring, which facilitates AM placement. Our technique is easy to use and minimizes suturing and manipulation of ocular tissues, resulting in decreased operative time. This technique may be applied in the management of multiple ocular surface disease

A review of the surgical options for the correction of presbyopia.

Presbyopia is an age-related eye condition where one of the signs is the reduction in the amplitude of accommodation, resulting in the loss of ability to change the eye's focus from far to near. It is the most common age-related ailments affecting everyone around their mid-40s. Methods for the correction of presbyopia include contact lens and spectacle options but the surgical correction of presbyopia still remains a significant challenge for refractive surgeons. Surgical strategies for dealing with presbyopia may be extraocular (corneal or scleral) or intraocular (removal and replacement of t

Ventral transpalpebral anterior orbitotomy: surgical description and report of 3 cases.

PURPOSE: To describe a surgical approach to allow access to the ventral anterior canine orbit and report outcomes of three cases. SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: After induction of general anesthesia and aseptic preparation of the surgical site, a 2.5- to 3-cm curvilinear skin incision was created through the inferior eyelid at the level of the ventral orbital rim. A combination of sharp and blunt dissection facilitated entrance into the ventral anterior orbital space for the removal of diseased tissues or allows for drainage of purulent debris. Two-layer closure was performed, and postoperative lateral
