The optic disk-directed growth of retinal ganglion cell axons is markedly disturbed in the presence of polyclonal antineurolin antibodies, which mildly affect fasciculation (Ott, H., M. Bastmeyer, and C.A.O. Stuermer, 1998. J. Neurosci. 18:3363-3372). New monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against goldfish neurolin, an immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily cell adhesion/recognition molecule with five Ig domains, were generated to assign function (guidance versus fasciculation) to specific Ig domains. By their ability or failure to recognize Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing recombinant neurolin with

BACKGROUND: To report the neuro-ophthalmological findings in the TAFRO syndrome in a South American patient.
METHODS: This is a case report of a patient with TAFRO syndrome.
RESULTS: We present the case of a 66-year-old woman with TAFRO syndrome and multicentric Castleman disease, who developed ophthalmic manifestations, as a rare complication, including optic disk edema and serous retinal detachment, which improved with conventional therapy.
CONCLUSIONS: The optic disk edema could be present as a neuro-ophthalmological finding in TAFRO syndrome. To the best of our knowledge, this is the fi

PURPOSE: The prevalence of retinal vascular abnormalities in children is shown to be similar to that in adults. Swelling of the optic disk in children may have different etiologies. The differential diagnosis necessitates an interdisciplinary workup.
METHODS: This study presents a case of bilateral edema of the optic disk with unilateral diminution of visual acuity in an 11-year-old girl due to malignant hypertension caused by reflux nephropathy in consequence of vesicoureteric reflux and recurrent urinary tract infections.
CONCLUSION: Early diagnosis of malignant hypertension in children an

Eleven patients (6 female, 5 male) with unilateral (6) or bilateral (5) (peri)orbital encephaloceles (nasofrontal in 4 cases, naso-orbital in 3, spheno-orbital in 4), were ophthalmologically examined. All had normal anterior segments, but ipsilateral or bilateral anomalies of the optic nerve head such as coloboma, pits, morning glory syndrome, dysplasia, tilted disk syndrome, hypoplasia, or a persistent hyaloid artery. In regard to the pathogenesis of (peri)orbital encephaloceles associated with optic disk malformations a common clefting defect in the neuroectodermal and neurocristal midline s

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Glaucoma, a worldwide eye disease, may cause irreversible vision damage. If not treated properly at an early stage, glaucoma eventually deteriorates into blindness. Various glaucoma screening methods, e.g. Ultrasound Biomicroscopy (UBM), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), and Heidelberg Retinal Scanner (HRT), are available. However, retinal fundus image photography examination, because of its low cost, is one of the most common solutions used to diagnose glaucoma. Clinically, the cup-to-disk ratio is an important indicator in glaucoma diagnosis. Therefore, precise fu

Glaucoma leads to changes of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). This study was performed to evaluate glaucomatous alterations of the RNFL and to correlate them with other parameters of glaucomatous optic nerve damage. The study included red-free wide-angle fundus photographs of the RNFL of 453 normal eyes and 609 eyes with glaucoma. We evaluated the visibility of the RNFL in different fundus regions and the occurrence of localized RNFL defects. In the glaucoma eyes, including those with "early" glaucomatous optic nerve damage, the visibility of RNFL was significantly lower than in the norma

Optic nerve aplasia (ONA) is a rare congenital malformation characterized by absence of optic disk, optic nerve, retinal ganglion cells, and central retina vessels. It is frequently associated with other ocular and central nervous system anomalies. In this paper, we describe a case of ONA associated with microphthalmos and a rudimental retinal vasculature in an otherwise healthy infant.

A 24-year-old woman developed bilateral blindness after recovery from coma secondary to acute intermittent porphyria. Gradual return of vision in the right eye with a permanent unilateral visual field defect and optic atrophy followed. We believe the pathophysiologic mechanism was spasm of the vessels supplying the optic disk leading to ischemia and infarction of the optic nerve.

We present a family with autosomal-dominant inheritance of renal insufficiency caused by renal hypoplasia in six individuals. In all affected individuals, signs of optic disk dysplasia were detected, but most patients were asymptomatic. A heterozygous missense mutation in the PAX2 gene causing a Gly75 to Ser substitution was present in all affected individuals. A second, unrelated patient presented with ocular complaints related to optic disk dysplasia, and had a history of vesico-ureteral reflux. A heterozygous hexanucleotide duplication in the PAX2 gene was detected leading to the duplicatio

We examined three patients with intracranial mass lesions that damaged the anterior visual pathway and studied this damage histologically after the patients died. Estimation of the number of surviving axons in the six optic nerves generally showed the greatest atrophy to be in the temporal sector in cross sections immediately behind the globe. More posterior to the globe, atrophy appeared greatest in the center of several nerves. This pattern of damage may result from particular vulnerability of macular axons to damage along the anterior visual pathway. Optic disk pallor was present in two eye

A 43-year-old man noted decreased vision after head trauma, with normal neuroimaging acutely. He had a left homonymous hemianopia, confirmed with hemifield visual evoked potentials, from trauma to the right optic tract. Four months after trauma, a magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed atrophy of the right optic tract, and funduscopy revealed optic disk pallor with decreased retinal nerve fiber layer measures consistent with an optic tract syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Optic disc drusen (ODD) are acellular deposits in the prelaminar optic nerve head. The most accredited theory is that they are secondary to abnormalities in axonal metabolism and degeneration, but the pathogenesis is not clear to date.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATION: Although ODD are often considered a benign condition, the great majority of patients with ODD show visual field defects and are at higher risk for developing anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. ODD are classified as superficial or buried, with the latter being often misdiagnosed as papilledema with optic nerve head swelling,

Sixty-seven optic nerve heads of 40 patients with proven or suspected glaucoma were measured by planimetry and with the Rodenstock Optic Nerve Head Analyser (ONHA). The results were compared to visual field indices obtained with the Octopus program G-1. Good correlation of the results obtained by the two measurement procedures has been shown (Stürmer et al. 1989), between values for the disk area, the excavation area, and the cup/disk ratio. However, there is only weak correlation of values for the neuroretinal rim. The planimetrically measured neuroretinal rim area in the total population exa

UNLABELLED: The rising number of cases requiring intraocular lens (IOL) exchange, including those for refractive reasons, drives the search for methods to minimize the trauma of the procedure. Lens implants with modular optics may lower complication risks.
PURPOSE: To test the use of modular IOL on a laboratory animal in an experiment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A novel modular IOL was implanted into rabbit eyes in disjointed form with subsequent intraocular assembling. Presence of long-term side effects of implantation and possibility of atraumatic optical disk exchange were evaluated 4 months a

We report the case of a 15-year-old boy with hypertensive retinopathy and Purtscher-like retinopathy eventually diagnosed with complement 3 glomerulopathy (C3G). The patient presented with bilateral severe painless visual loss and posterior pole cotton wool spots, optic disk and macular edema, and macular star-shaped hard exudate depositions, arterial narrowing, and venous tortuosity, indicative of hypertensive retinopathy (with an initial blood pressure of 210/130 mm Hg) and Purtscher-like retinopathy. He was subsequently diagnosed with C3G based on results of a kidney biopsy. There was a mil

Retinal hemorrhages and visual field defects can occur as complications of optic nerve drusen. The visual defects of optic drusen are of three types: (1) concentric constriction of the field, (2) enlargement of the blind spot, and (3) nerve fiber bundle defects. Retinal hemorrhages also fall into three categories: (1) splinter hemorrhages overlying the disk, (2) vitreous hemorrhages, and (3) subretinal hemorrhages. The unusual disk vasculature associated with drusen is probably responsible for the retinal hemorrhages and may be the primary defect in the pathogenesis of drusen. Altered axoplasm
