Retinal nerve fiber layer evaluation in multiple sclerosis with spectral domain optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE: Histopathologic studies have reported retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning in various neurodegenerative diseases. Attempts to quantify this loss in vivo have relied on time-domain optical coherence tomography (TDOCT), which has low resolution and requires substantial interpolation of data for volume measurements. We hypothesized that the significantly higher resolution of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) would better detect RNFL changes in patients with multiple sclerosis, and that RNFL thickness differences between eyes with and without optic neuritis might b

In-vivo demonstration of a high resolution optical fiber manometry catheter for diagnosis of gastrointestinal motility disorders.

Fiber optic catheters for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal motility disorders are demonstrated in-vitro and in-vivo. Single element catheters have been verified against existing solid state catheters and a multi-element catheter has been demonstrated for localized and full esophageal monitoring. The multi-element catheter consists of a series of closely spaced pressure sensors that pick up the peristaltic wave traveling along the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The sensors are spaced on a 10 mm pitch allowing a full interpolated image of intraluminal pressure to be generated. Details are given o

Optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer analysis: a report by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the current published literature on the use of optic nerve head (ONH) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) measurement devices in diagnosing open-angle glaucoma and detecting progression. METHODS: A search of peer-reviewed literature was conducted on February 15, 2006 in PubMed and the Cochrane Library for the period January 2003 to February 2006. The search was limited to studies of adults in English-language journals and yielded 442 citations. The panel reviewed the abstracts of these articles and selected 159 articles of possible clinical relevance for review. Of the

Monitoring of recombinant survival motor neuron protein using fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is the leading genetic cause of infant mortality. SMA is caused by the homozygous loss of the survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) gene. A nearly identical copy gene exists known as SMN2, however, due to an aberrant splicing event, the SMN2 gene fails to produce sufficient full-length protein to protect against disease development in the absence of SMN1. While a number of compounds have recently been identified that can stimulate full-length survival motor neuron (SMN) expression from the nearly identical copy SMN2, one of the difficulties has been the lack of a highly

Increased NCAM-180 immunoreactivity and maintenance of L1 immunoreactivity in injured optic fibers of adult mice.

The injury related expression of two axon-growth promoting cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), NCAM-180 which is developmentally downregulated and L1 which is regionally restricted, were compared in optic fibers in the adult mouse. The neuron-specific isoform of NCAM (NCAM-180) is present at very low levels in unlesioned adult optic axons. At 7 days after nerve crush, immunoreactivity was strongly and uniformly increased in optic axons within the nerve and throughout retina. Reactivity in surviving axons had returned to control levels at 4 weeks. To induce regrowth of adult retinal ganglion cell a

Early postnatal expression of L1 by retinal fibers in the optic tract and synaptic targets of the Syrian hamster.

Previous immunohistochemical studies in mouse, rat, and chick have reported that the expression of the glycoprotein and cell adhesion molecule L1, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, shows regulation during development of retina and optic nerve. To extend our understanding of the role of L1 in developing neural circuitry, we have examined L1 expression in the optic tract and thalamic and midbrain synaptic targets of retinal fibers in the early postnatal Syrian hamster, a well-characterized developmental model of the primary visual projection. Metabolic labeling studies reveal that a sy

Loss of axonal microtubules and neurofilaments after stretch-injury to guinea pig optic nerve fibers.

Axonal swellings, characterized by focal accumulations of membranous organelles at presumed sites of interrupted axonal transport, occur in diffuse axonal injury (DAI) in human, blunt head injury and in animal models of nondisruptive axonal injury. Membranous organelles are transported by fast axonal transport in association with microtubules. Although loss of microtubules has been documented at levels of injury severe enough to result in permeabilization of the axolemma to tracers such as horseradish peroxidase, there has been no detailed analysis of responses by microtubules in less severe o

[What is new in nasopharyngeal video fiber optic endoscopy in the diagnosis of snoring and patients with obstructive apnea?].

Videoendoscopy of the oropharynx was performed in 57 patients with habitual snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome. Endoscopy was done in waking supine subjects relaxed and during voluntary snoring, Esmarch's and modified Müller's manoeuvre. Evaluation of results for the first time was semiquantitative. Statistical analysis showed significant correlations (p less than 0.004) between movements of the base of the tongue and the modified Müller's manoeuvre. For the first time it could be shown that the dynamic changes in the pharyngeal walls during voluntary snoring are identical with thos

Effects of limited postnatal ethanol exposure on the development of myelin and nerve fibers in rat optic nerve.

This study was designed to morphologically evaluate the effects of limited postnatal alcohol exposure on the development of myelin and axons in the rat optic nerve. Rat pups were artificially reared on Days 5-18 with a supplemented milk diet fed via a chronic gastrostomy tube. Experimental animals received 4% ethanol in their diet on Days 5-9, otherwise the experimental and control animals received identical diets in identical volumes. Optic nerve tissues were prepared for electron microscopy on Days 10, 16, 22, 29, and 90. The cross-sectional areas of optic nerves were smaller, there were few

Automated 3D segmentation of methyl isocyanate-exposed rat trachea using an ultra-thin, fully fiber optic optical coherence endoscopic probe.

Development of effective rescue countermeasures for toxic inhalational industrial chemicals, such as methyl isocyanate (MIC), has been an emerging interest. Nonetheless, current methods for studying toxin-induced airway injuries are limited by cost, labor time, or accuracy, and only provide indirect or localized information. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) endoscopic probes have previously been used to visualize the 3-D airway structure. However, gathering such information in small animal models, such as rat airways after toxic gas exposure, remains a challenge due to the required probe siz
