Different types of neoplastic and non neoplastic lesions can affect the orbit causing ocular damage. Aim of the present study was that to review a series of endoorbital neoplastic and non neoplastic space occupying lesions. PURPOSE: Streptococcal gangrene, also termed streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis, is resurgent but remains exceedingly rare. Ophthalmologists and dermatologists must be aware of streptococcal gangrene, as eyelids are the most commonly affected area of the head and neck.

A 22-year-old woman with a history of hyperthyroidism and a paravaginal alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma developed diplopia 3 months after successful autologous bone marrow transplantation. Results of computed tomographic scan showed apparent enlargement of the right inferior rectus muscle, and thyroid eye disease was suspected. However, results of further evaluation revealed an alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma that metastasized to the orbit.

Multiple surgical approaches to the orbits with the use of the eyelids have been used. The orbital rim incision fell into disfavor because of esthetic considerations. A subciliary approach supplemented by the lateral brow incision is currently the most popular method of approach to the orbital rim. It provides adequate access to the orbit, but it is not without inherent complications, such as unfavorable scarring, ectropion, and entropion. This article describes an alternate approach to the orbit by means of a transconjunctival incision with lateral canthotomy.

Epidermoid cysts originating within the diploic space of the bony orbit are rare. The authors retrospectively studied four patients with an intradiploic epidermoid cyst of the orbital bones to investigate the clinical and the computed tomographic (CT) findings. SH U 454 is a new echocontrast agent which was developed primarily for echocardiography. It seems that there is a further potential in ophthalmic ultrasound diagnostics. SH U 454 produces contrast enhancement in the orbit, choroid and ciliary body, and permits determination of intraocular blood flow parameters in dogs' eyes. The effects are measured with digital picture processing techniques.

A case report and a review of the literature of inflammatory pseudotumors of the orbit is presented. The lateral approach, using microsurgical technique, is described. The incidence of this primary granuloma is comparable to other orbital tumors, and the diagnosis is confirmed by histological study of a biopsy specimen. Surgical excision offers the best mode of treatment. Although steroids may help postoperatively, the prognosis is poorer if the tumors are large. Radiotherapy offers no benefit.
