Factors influencing root resorption in retained mandibular second deciduous molars with congenital absence of second premolars: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: There are currently no studies that quantitatively compare the relationship of root resorption to the patient's systemic history or craniofacial and intraoral morphology, especially in relation to possible host factors. Thus, this study aimed to clarify the factors associated with root resorption in retained mandibular second deciduous molars with the congenital absence of second premolars and predict the prognosis of retained mandibular second deciduous molars. METHODS: A cohort of 5547 patients who visited the orthodontic clinic at Tokyo Medical and Dental University Dental Hosp

Interdisciplinary treatment of a nonsyndromic oligodontia patient with implant-anchored orthodontics.

We successfully treated a nonsyndromic oligodontia patient with implant-anchored orthodontics and prosthetic restorations. A woman, age 18 years 11 months, had a straight profile and a skeletal Class I jaw-base relationship but had spaced arches because of 7 congenitally missing teeth. After leveling and alignment of the dentition, a titanium miniscrew was temporarily placed at the distal alveolus of the mandibular right first premolar, and the posterior teeth were mesialized to reduce the restorative spaces. After determination of the incisor positions, 3 dental implants were respectively ins

Case report: management of significant incisor root resorption associated with maxillary canine impaction.

Orthodontic and periodontic management of a patient with bilaterally impacted maxillary canines and advanced resorption of the adjacent lateral incisors is presented. In treating the patient, the affected laterals were retained and the canines were surgically exposed, then moved away from the roots of the laterals and into position in the arch. Alternative treatment strategies are discussed. Long-term follow-up evaluation revealed successful maintenance of the dentition and of periodontal health.

Is wear time of Hawley retainers measured with microsensors related to mandibular arch stability?

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to show a possible correlation between the mean wear time of Hawley retainers and long-term mandibular arch stability as assessed via wear time analysis with microsensors. METHODS: This longitudinal retrospective study comprised 47 subjects (mean age 16.30 ± 1.06 years) having been treated with a nonextraction protocol and presenting moderate crowding at pretreatment. For retention, all patients were instructed to use a mandibular Hawley retainer for 12 months, and wear time was documented every 3 months during a posttreatment period of 6 months using TheraM

Precise Placement of Single-Retainer Resin-Bonded Fixed Dental Prostheses with an Innovative Splint Design.

Single-retainer resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) are difficult to position due to the pressure of soft tissue at the pontic area and the single-retainer design. This clinical report describes an innovative technique for the insertion of single-retainer RBFDPs. An incisal inserting splint is used to position the RBFDPs reliably. With the help of grooves in the buccal and incisal area of the splint, the precise positioning of the splint on the adjacent teeth and the RBFDP can be controlled. Also, a hole in the retainer wing region of the splint gives access for pressure application

Full-thickness flap/subepithelial connective tissue grafting with intramarrow penetrations: three case reports of lingual root coverage.

Three case reports are presented that demonstrate the use of full-thickness flap/subepithelial connective tissue grafting for root coverage on the lingual surfaces of the mandibular anterior teeth. This is accomplished using an envelope full-thickness flap technique with intramarrow penetrations at the recipient site. Miller Class I, II, and III gingival recession defects and gingival perforation defects were treated. Complete root coverage was achieved in two Miller Class I gingival recession defects, in one Miller Class II gingival recession defect, and in two gingival perforation defects in

Oral lichen planus in childhood.

Oral lichen planus is rare in childhood, and only a few reports on this subject have appeared in the literature. Our objective was to report individual cases of oral lichen planus in childhood from our practice and to review the literature on this subject. We recruited patients younger than 18 years with oral lichen planus and documented several clinical aspects, the histopathology, patch tests, and blood examination findings. Three patients from about 10,000 dermatology patients younger than 18 years seen from 1994 to 2003 were included. Of these three, an Asian girl aged 11 years had an asym

Untreated, Impacted Canine Leading to Root Resorption of the Central Incisor: A Case Report of Orthodontic Treatment With Canine Substitution.

Among impacted teeth, maxillary canines are the most frequently impacted after third molars. Untreated impacted canines may lead to complications such as root resorption of adjacent teeth. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment of impacted canines are very important. The treatment methods, such as creating space for eruption, extraction of the deciduous canine, and surgical exposure with orthodontic traction, should be promptly employed to guide the canine to erupt into its normal position. We reported a case of an 11-year-old girl with maxillary canine impaction leading to root resorption o

Immobilization of root-compromised maxillary anterior teeth: a case report with 14-year clinical follow-up.

The efficacy of a modified cast-metal resin-bonded splint was evaluated after 14 years in service. The splint was used to immobilize the root-compromised maxillary central and lateral incisors of a teenage male following relapsed orthodontic treatment. The affected teeth were indirectly traumatized, before their eruption, in a bicycle accident that resulted in avulsion of their primary predecessors. The rationale for selecting this treatment modality rather than the alternatives is discussed. The clinical protocol employed during the treatment and subsequent follow-up is described.
