In the mixed dentition, the goal of orthodontic treatment is to maintain or improve arch integrity for the eruption of the permanent teeth, and to prevent the development of a more complicated malocclusion. The importance of correct diagnosis prior to the treatment of mixed-dentition patients cannot be over emphasized. An understanding of the mixed dentition's normal development allows clinicians to determine if the occlusion is developing outside of the normal range. Appropriate treatment can only be planned after this determination has been made. Once it is concluded that orthodontic treatme

The authors measured nasal resistance in 53 children aged 5 to 13 years treated for bite disorders. Comparison of the results with a normal control group of children of the same age demonstrated that major nasal incompetence was 4 times more common in the group of children with orthodontic abnormalities. Nasal incompetence with permanent buccal respiration leads to disordered growth and modification of the morphogenesis of the naso-ethmoid-maxillary unit. Adaptation of deglutition and phonation to these new conditions produces modifications in the tension of the velo-pharyngo-facial and pharyn

BACKGROUND: Dental anomalies represent frequent findings in orthodontics and pediatric dentistry, often leading to functional and esthetic problems. Although their etiology is multifactorial, the role of genetic factors is increasingly recognised.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of dental anomalies and identify associative patterns that may suggest a shared genetic origin.
STUDY DESIGN: This observational, cross-sectional retrospective study analysed panoramic radiographs from patients attending 2 orthodontic and one pediatric dentistry practices. Inclusion criteria excluded cases wit

BACKGROUND: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify whether there is any relationship between fixed orthodontic appliances and malodor, and if self-ligating brackets (SLBs) prevent malodor better than conventional brackets (CBs).
METHODS: The electronic databases PubMed, Ovid, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to September 2016; a manual search was also performed. Randomized controlled and clinical controlled trials, in which experimental groups received fixed orthodontic therapy and malodor was measured, were included. Patients treated with fixe

Infection control is essential to protect both the doctor and the patient by preventing the spread of infectious diseases. There is no exception in the field of dentistry, particularly in orthodontics, where numerous appliances are used for a variety of functions and also because the mouth cavity has the highest concentration of bacteria of any body part. Through this systematic review, we aimed to assess the various methods of sterilization employed in an orthodontic setting. Using relevant keywords, reference searches, and citation searches, the databases such as PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Scie

The purpose of this study was to evaluate histologically the root surfaces of teeth submitted to orthodontic and surgical extrusion procedures in a dog model. Eighteen adult male dogs, divided into six groups of three dogs each, were used in the study. Each animal underwent two procedures: rapid orthodontic extrusion and surgical extrusion of the maxillary lateral incisors. The animals were sacrificed to produce samples at 7, 14, 45, 90, 120, and 180 days after surgery for assessment of cross sections of the coronal, medial, and apical thirds of the treated teeth. At early time points, some ac

Orthodontic relapse is one of the most prevalent concerns of orthodontic therapy. Relapse results in patients' teeth reverting towards their pretreatment positions, which increases the susceptibility to functional problems, dental disease, and substantially increases the financial burden for retreatment. This phenomenon is thought to be induced by rapid remodeling of the periodontal ligament (PDL) in the early stages and poor bone quality in the later stages. Current therapies, including fixed or removable retainers and fiberotomies, have limitations with patient compliance and invasiveness. A

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the role of the immune cells and their interaction with cells found in gingiva, periodontal ligament, and bone that leads to net bone loss in periodontitis or bone remodeling in orthodontic tooth movement.
RECENT FINDINGS: Periodontal disease is one of the most common oral diseases causing inflammation in the soft and hard tissues of the periodontium and is initiated by bacteria that induce a host response. Although the innate and adaptive immune response function cooperatively to prevent bacterial dissemination, they also play a major role in gingival inflammatio

Orthodontics and prosthodontics in orthognathic surgery In complex care, such as for growth disorders and congenital anomalies, multidisciplinary collaboration is essential and begins even before the actual treatment starts. Systematic evaluation of dental, skeletal and soft tissue parameters prevents the correction of one aspect from creating new discrepancies in another area. Through backwards planning, the desired fi nal outcome is fi rst determined collaboratively, after which the treatment process is mapped out step by step in reverse. The process consists of 5 phases: 1. determining desi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The results from the literature regarding the influence of supplemental vibrational forces (SVFs) on orthodontic treatment are controversial. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to evaluate whether SVFs have positive effects, such as in accelerating tooth movement, alleviating pain, and preventing root resorption, in orthodontic patients.
SEARCH METHODS: Searches through five electronic databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central) were complemented by hand searches up to January, 2019.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomized controlled trial

Introduction: Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing gingival hyperplasia and preventing dental caries formation. However, concerns exist about its potential impact on the bond strength of resin composites. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aPDT with various photosensitizers on the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic brackets to enamel. Methods: A total of 102 healthy bovine central incisors were divided into six groups as follows: Group 1: control, Group 2: chlorhexidine (CHX), Group 3: aPDT with methylene blue and a 660-nm laser, Gr

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex disorder that affects multiple systems and may cause craniofacial and dentofacial abnormalities. However, there is still a lack of evidence in the literature regarding the progress of orthodontic treatment in patients with PWS. This case report describes the successful orthodontic treatment of a patient with PWS. A girl, 9 years 0 months of age, who had been diagnosed with PWS had protruding maxillary incisors and a convex profile. Her malocclusion was due to the posteriorly positioned mandible. Screening tests for sleep apnea syndrome showed that she h
