Incidence and factors associated with development of heterotopic ossification after damage control laparotomy.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) following damage control laparotomy (DCL) is unknown. Abdominal wall reconstruction may prove more challenging in patients with HO. This study examines the incidence and factors associated with HO in patients with an open abdomen following DCL. METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients with an open abdomen after DCL at a level 1 trauma centre from 2009 to 2015 was conducted. Demographics and peri-operative outcomes of patients with and without HO were compared. Univariate and multivariable binary logistic regression models wer

Rhabdomyolysis after heterotopic ossification: an unusual complication in a spinal cord injured patient.

PURPOSE: Loss of joint mobility, resulting loss of function peripheral nerve entrapment and pressure sores are the known complications of heterotopic ossification. METHODS: We reported about a 32-year-old male patient, referred to our clinic presenting with incomplete tetraplegia after a motorcycle accident. The patient developed a HO in both hips 19 days after injury. Single-dose radiation therapy with 7 Gy with an electrode voltage of 15 MeV was performed. RESULTS: One month after radiation therapy, the patient developed a fever of 104ºF and blood tests showed increased C-reactive protein

Incidence of heterotopic ossification and effects of various prophylactic methods after hip resurfacing.

UNLABELLED: A retrospective analysis of 1000 hips in 838 patients was conducted to determine the efficacy of alterations made throughout the series to the prophylactic protocol used to minimize the incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) after hip resurfacing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four groups were determined following the initiation of these changes. Initially, the patients received indomethacin and 1000 milliliters of both saline and duobiotic (group 1). In group 2, a single pre-operative 700 cGy radiotherapy session was added for males undergoing one-stage bilateral procedures or the s

Troublesome heterotopic ossification after central nervous system damage: a survey of 570 surgeries.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a frequent complication after central nervous system (CNS) damage but has seldom been studied. We aimed to investigate features of HO for the first time in a large sample and the rate of early recurrence of HO in terms of the time of surgery. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We retrospectively analyzed data from an anonymous prospective survey of patients undergoing surgery between May 1993 and November 2009 in our institution for troublesome HO related to acquired neurological disease. Demographic and HO characteristics and neurological etiologies

Suprascapular neuropathy caused by heterotopic ossification after clavicle shaft fracture: a case report.

Suprascapular neuropathy is a rare peripheral neuropathy that can be easily overlooked in the differential diagnosis of shoulder pain and dysfunction. The suprascapular nerve may be injured as a result of repetitive overuse, constriction due to anatomic variants, compression due to space occupying lesions, retraction due to a massive rotator cuff tear and iatrogenic or traumatic lesions. Trauma-related suprascapular neuropathies are often caused by glenohumeral joint dislocations, scapular fractures, proximal humeral fractures, penetrating injuries and displaced clavicle fractures. Although ma

Inhalant abuse of 1,1-difluoroethane (DFE) leading to heterotopic ossification: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of mature, lamellar bone within soft tissues other than the periosteum. There are three recognized etiologies of HO: traumatic, neurogenic, and genetic. Presently, there are no definitively documented causal factors of HO. The following factors are presumed to place a patient at higher risk: 60 years of age or older, male, previous HO, hypertrophic osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, prior hip surgery, and surgical risk factors. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old male, involved in a motor ve

Heterotopic ossification after treatment of femoral head osteonecrosis with free vascularized fibular graft.

This study evaluated patients with heterotopic ossification after implantation of a free vascularized fibular graft for the treatment of femoral head osteonecrosis. We hypothesized that the osteogenic tendency of these patients might enhance the graft-host union and new bone formation in the femoral head, although the presence of heterotopic ossification might influence adversely the clinical result. Of patients with femoral head osteonecrosis, 32% developed heterotopic ossification after treatment with free vascularized fibular graft. Heterotopic bone formation did not influence the efficacy

Diagnostic imaging of heterotopic ossification with coexistent deep-venous thrombosis in flaccid paraplegia.

Heterotopic ossification and deep-venous thrombosis can coexist. This raises potential problems because diagnosis depends heavily on imaging studies, and an ideal imaging study which will cost-effectively and noninvasively diagnose both conditions simultaneously is not readily available. A case of coexistent heterotopic ossification and deep-venous thrombosis in flaccid paraplegia is presented. In this case, deep-venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolus were diagnosed and treatment was begun without knowledge of the coexistent heterotopic ossification. Alternative imaging and laboratory diagnos

Single-dose radiation therapy for prevention of heterotopic ossification after total hip arthroplasty.

Single-dose radiation therapy was prospectively evaluated for its efficacy in prevention of heterotopic ossification in patients at high risk after total hip arthroplasty. Thirty-one patients (34 hips) were treated between 1981 and 1988. Risk factors for inclusion in the protocol included prior evidence of heterotopic ossification, ankylosing spondylitis, and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. Patients with hypertrophic osteoarthritis or traumatic arthritis with osteophytes were not included. Operations on 34 hips included 19 primary total and 11 revision total hip arthroplasties and 4

Baclofen Promotes Osteochondrogenic Commitment of Mesenchymal Stem Cells: Implications for Heterotopic Ossification Risk.

(1) Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a pathological process characterized by ectopic bone formation in soft tissues, often following trauma or neurological injury, and is associated with spasticity and chronic inflammation. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play a central role in HO by differentiating into osteoblasts through endochondral or intramembranous ossification, while alternative fates such as adipogenesis are suppressed. In this study, we investigated the effects of two commonly used antispastic drugs, baclofen and tizanidine, on MSC differentiation under adipogenic and inflammatory cond

Heterotopic Ossification After Acute Acromioclavicular Joint Dislocation-Effect on Radiographic and Clinical Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) frequently occurs after treatments for acute acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocations, and is often considered a complication. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate and compare HO severity and configuration after single-suture button (SSB) and double-suture button (DSB) stabilization, and nonoperative treatment. It was hypothesized that the extent of HO after Rockwood (RW) type V injuries is associated with increased vertical stability, without substantially impairing clinical results. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. ME

Engineered bone-targeting apoptotic vesicles as a minimally invasive nanotherapy for heterotopic ossification.

Heterotopic Ossification (HO), refers to pathological extra skeletal bone formation, and there are currently no reliable methods except surgery to reverse these unexpected calcified tissues. Apoptotic vesicles (ApoEVs) are membrane-bound vesicles released by apoptotic cells, which are involved in metabolism regulation and intercellular communication. Due to its superior trauma-healing ability, the hard palate mucosa is expected to become an essential resource for tissue engineering. This work presents a minimally invasive nanotherapy based on an engineered apoEV. Briefly, apoEVs were extracted

Pharmacologic or genetic targeting of peripheral nerves prevents peri-articular traumatic heterotopic ossification.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a pathological process that commonly arises following severe polytrauma, characterized by the anomalous differentiation of mesenchymal progenitor cells and resulting in the formation of ectopic bone in non-skeletal tissues. This abnormal bone growth contributes to pain and reduced mobility, especially when adjacent to a joint. Our prior observations suggested an essential role of NGF (Nerve Growth Factor)-responsive TrkA (Tropomyosin Receptor Kinase A)-expressing peripheral nerves in regulating abnormal osteochondral differentiation following tendon injury. Trauma patient heterotopic ossification diagnosis is associated with increased hospital length of stay.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic heterotopic ossification (tHO) refers to the development of extra-skeletal bone in muscle and soft tissues following tissue insult secondary to surgery or trauma. This presents a persistent clinical concern associated with significant patient morbidity and expense to diagnose and treat. Traumatic HO is a substantial barrier to rehabilitation for trauma-injured patients. As such, the development of tHO after burn and other trauma is hypothesised to prolong inpatient length of stay (LOS) and thus increase health care costs. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between

Heterotopic Ossification After Modern Total Hip Arthroplasty: Predisposing Factors, Prophylaxis, and Surgical Treatment.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common radiographic finding and potentially serious complication after modern total hip arthroplasty. Although historically associated with the posterolateral approach, HO has been noted in 10% to 40% of patients having direct anterior or anterior-based muscle sparing approaches. The available data are uncertain whether robotic arm-assisted procedures are associated with this complication. Current prophylaxis for patients considered high risk of this complication includes postoperative, nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory medication for several weeks or low-dose

Lymphocytes Are Not Required for Neurogenic Heterotopic Ossification Development after Spinal Cord Injury.

Neurogenic heterotopic ossifications (NHOs) are incapacitating complications of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries (SCI) that manifest as abnormal bone formation in periarticular muscles. Using a unique model of NHO after SCI in genetically unmodified mice, we have previously established that the innate immune system plays a key driving role in NHO pathogenesis. The role of adaptive immune cells in NHO pathogenesis, however, remains unexplored in this model. Here we established that B lymphocytes were reduced in the spleen and blood after SCI and increased in muscles of mice in which NHO
