Plasma Levels of Neudesin and Glucose Metabolism in Obese and Overweight Children.

Childhood overweight and obesity are among the major health problems of modern times, especially in Western countries, due to their association with increased cardiovascular and cancer risk in adulthood. Neudesin, a recently discovered peptide secreted mainly in the brain and adipose tissue, is being investigated for its possible activity as a negative regulator of energy expenditure. We conducted a cross-sectional observational preliminary study with the aim of testing the hypothesis that plasma levels of neudesin can be modified in obese and overweight children and to evaluate any possible r

Tolerability of eptinezumab in overweight, obese or type 1 diabetes patients.

INTRODUCTION: In addition to its role in the pathogenesis of migraine, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is implicated in the regulation of insulin secretion. However, there are limited data on the use of CGRP inhibitor monoclonal antibodies in individuals who are overweight/obese and those with diabetes. METHODS: Two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials were conducted to assess the safety and metabolic effects of eptinezumab in non-migraine overweight/obese patients (study 1) and patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D; study 2). The primary end-point in overweight/obese patie

How to provide a structured clinical assessment of a patient with overweight or obesity.

With the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity worldwide, there is a reciprocal increase in the global economic burden and ill-health from obesity-related chronic diseases. Primary healthcare services have a role to play in ensuring early detection of weight issues and in directing patients towards evidence-based care to slow this progression. Research shows that many people with obesity are motivated to lose weight and want their clinician to initiate a conversation about weight management and treatment options. However, this conversation rarely occurs and there is a significant del

Rumination, mood, and maladaptive eating behaviors in overweight and healthy populations.

PURPOSE: The literature suggests that rumination (i.e., repetitive thinking about 1 or more negative concerns that is perceived as difficult to control) is linked to impaired emotional regulation and increases negative affect. Not only individuals suffering from overweight or obesity, but also healthy individuals might use emotional eating as a coping strategy to deal with negative affect caused by rumination. The aim of the present study was to determine the link between rumination and maladaptive eating strategies in participants with normal weight and overweight/obesity using trait and ecol

The Influence of Overweight and Obesity on Treatment Response in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

Background: There is evidence that obesity could be a risk factor for the severity and response to treatment in adult patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) due both to the mechanical effect of overweight and to the potential pro-inflammatory effects of cytokines produced by adipose tissue. Objectives: To evaluate the role of overweight and obesity in a cohort of young patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in terms of incidence, disease activity, outcome, and response to treatments. Methods: This single-center retrospective cohort study evaluated 110 children affected by JIA under

Brain response to taste in overweight children: A pilot feasibility study.

Understanding the neural response to food and food cues during early stages of weight gain in childhood may help us determine the drive processes involved in unhealthy eating behavior and risk for obesity. Healthy weight and overweight children ages 6-8 (N = 18; 10 with BMI between 5th and 85th %ile and 8 with BMI >85th %ile) underwent fMRI scans while anticipating and receiving tastes of chocolate milkshake. Parents completed a Children's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire. Results reveal greater response to milkshake taste receipt in overweight children in the right insula, operculum, precentral

A new index to simplify the screening of hypertension in overweight or obese youth.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hypertension (HTH) is a frequent complication in pediatric obesity. To simplify the screening of HTH in overweight/obese (Ow/Ob) youth, we compared the performance of a new index (High Blood Pressure index, HBPi) with respect to the standard criteria of the IV Report [systolic BP (SBP) and/or diastolic BP (DBP) ≥95th percentile for age, gender and height]. We also compared the performance of HBPi with other simplified indices such as the BP/height ratio and the absolute height-specific BP thresholds.
