Despite the importance of spatial processes in host-parasite interactions, parasite dispersal has been the subject of few experimental studies. Introduced marsupial common brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) are a major environmental and agricultural pest in New Zealand. Parastrongyloides trichosuri, an intestinal rhabdiasoid nematode parasite specific to possums, is being evaluated as a self-disseminating delivery system for engineered fertility control vaccines. This study addressed whether an artificial infection could be established in a naïve, free-living possum population, by measu

Crenosoma vulpis and Eucoleus aerophilus are nematode parasites that can cause verminous pneumonia in wild carnivores. There is a paucity of information regarding the distribution of parasites in the lungs and the relationship between histopathological and parasitological diagnoses in naturally infected foxes. The objectives of this study were: first, to study the lobar and airway distribution of C. vulpis and E. aerophilus in wild red foxes and second, to investigate the relationship between fecal and histopathological diagnoses. Samples from 6 sites of the lung and fecal contents were obtain

Using the example of a young man from Senegal we would like to point out that in cases of pruritus without an underlying skin disease an intestinal parasitosis might be the cause of the pruritus should the patient come from the tropics. However, it is important to use concentration methods when examining stool specimens so as to be able to diagnose the parasitosis. The causal connection between a pruritus and an intestinal parasitosis needs to be confirmed by a successful treatment.

The interaction between the 2 nodular worm species in the pig, Oesophagostomum dentatum (O.d.) and Oesophagostomum quadrispinulatum (O.q.), was studied by comparing the development and distribution of the species following single or mixed infections. The faecal egg excretion levels were assessed at regular intervals from week 3 post-inoculation, and indicated a strong negative impact of the introduction of O.q. on the continued egg excretion of O.d. All pigs were killed 9 weeks after the first inoculations to determine the composition and location of the worm burdens in the large intestine. O.

Status of intestinal protozoan and helminthic infections was surveyed in mestizo population living in rural parish of Palmar and its nearby recintos(villages). Three of the surveyed villages were at the Pacific coast and 5 villages were in inner pasture land, located about 100 km west of Guayaquil, the second largest city in Ecuador. One stool sample was examined by one cellophane thick smear for helminth ova and one direct smear stained with Lugol's iodine solution for protozoan cysts. Of 325 persons examined, 66.1% were positive for any ova or cyst. The positive rates were: 18.1% for Ascaris

In order to determine the duration of the gonotrophic cycle in Anopheles culicifacies Giles in Sri Lanka, ovarian development in freshly blood-fed wild-caught females was studied in the laboratory and the findings were compared with mark-and-release recoveries in the field. In specimens of unknown parity at first capture probable feeding intervals of 1, 2 and 3 days (mean: 1.7 - 2.1 days) were found. The release of freshly blood-fed nullipars bred from larvae produced two recaptures from which it could be concluded that the time required to become parous need not be more than three days. These

Following our previous findings on the in vitro anthelmintic effect of camel milk on Haemonchus contortus, the current study aimed at investigating its in vivo effect. Investigations were carried out using mice infected with Heligmosomoides polygyrus which is a parasite commonly used to test the efficacy of anthelmintics. Thirty six Swiss white mice of both sexes aged 5 - 6 weeks old, and weighing between 20 and 25 g were orally infected with 0.5 ml dose of 100, 1-week-old H. polygyrus infective larvae (L3). After the pre-patent period, infected animals were randomly divided into 6 groups of 6

BACKGROUND: Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) or 'pinkeye' is an economically important ocular disease that significantly impacts animal performance. Genetic parameters for IBK infection and its genetic and phenotypic correlations with cattle tick counts, number of helminth (unspecified species) eggs per gram of faeces and growth traits in Australian tropically adapted Bos taurus cattle were estimated.
METHODS: Animals were clinically examined for the presence of IBK infection before and after weaning when the calves were 3 to 6 months and 15 to 18 months old, respectively and were

An epidemiological study of gastrointestinal helminths of dogs (Canis familiaris) in two veterinary clinics in Ibadan, Nigeria, was conducted between January 2001 and December 2002. Faecal samples collected from 959 dogs were processed by modified Kato-Katz technique and then examined for helminth eggs. The results of the study showed that 237 (24.7%) of the dogs examined were infected with different types of helminths. The prevalences for the various helminth eggs observed were: Toxocara canis 9.0%, Ancylostoma spp. 17.9%, Toxascaris leonina 0.6%, Trichuris vulpis 0.5%, Uncinaria stenocephala

Treatment for enteric parasites is a common practice in beef cattle, yet little data is known about the prevalence of nematode and trematode parasite infections in beef cattle in the western United States. Likewise, the data on the efficacy of deworming practices and the presence of anthelmintic resistance (AR) of these parasites in this region is sparse. The current study collected evidence for the presence of nematode and trematode parasites in 18 herds of young beef cattle grazing either dryland or irrigated pasture in northern California as well as on efficacy and evidence of AR in a subgr

Haemonchus contortus is a highly pathogenic gastrointestinal nematode of domestic and wild ruminants whose epidemiological success is closely linked to high reproductive capacity. For female daily egg output, however, direct observations remain limited, and published estimates vary widely, ranging from fewer than 20 to 10,000-15,000 eggs per female per day. This study assessed in utero egg counts in female H. contortus recovered from experimentally infected lambs in order to evaluate their implications for fertility relative to values commonly cited in the literature. Archived female nematodes

Experimental infection of a host with nematodes requires embryonated eggs. Embryonable eggs can be isolated either directly from the uteri of adult worms or from host faeces. This study investigated whether mature female Ascaridia galli worms recovered from the intestines of naturally infected laying hens can produce and release substantial numbers of eggs during a short off-host incubation, and whether such an incubation reduces uterine egg reserves. Seventy mature female A. galli worms were allocated to 14 replicate batches of five worms. Seven replicates were processed immediately for uteri

Schistosomiasis is one of the most devastating neglected tropical diseases, affecting over 250 million people worldwide and contributing to approximately 280,000 deaths annually. Microscopic detection of Schistosoma mansoni eggs in fecal samples using the Kato-Katz method remains the diagnostic standard. However, its speed and detection efficiency are limited. In this report, we present a novel microscopic technique - transmission-through-dye (TTD) imaging. TTD highlights viable eggs in bright red against a dark background, enhancing their visibility and detectability. TTD imaging appears to b

Two exemplary cases of mixed urogenital and intestinal schistosomiasis in Malawi show hybridizations of Schistosoma mattheei with S. haematobium and S. mansoni, indicating newly emerging genetic diversity. Complex egg excretion patterns in feces expose current diagnostic gaps and alert to future sampling needs for effective surveillance of zoonotic schistosomiasis.

Chicken production has increased over the past decade, resulting in a concomitant rise in the demand for more humane options for poultry products including cage-free, free-range, and organic meat and eggs. These husbandry changes, however, have come hand-in-hand with increased prevalence of Ascaridia galli infection, which can cause clinical disease in chickens as well as the occasional appearance of worms in eggs. Additionally, development of anthelmintic resistance in closely related helminths of turkeys highlights the need for closely monitored anthelmintic treatment programs. Manual faecal

In June 2022, at the XXXII Conference of the Italian Society of Parasitology, the parallels of the main endoparasitic infections of horses and donkeys were discussed. Although these 2 species are genetically different, they can be challenged by a similar range of parasites (i.e. small and large strongyles, and Parascaris spp.). Although equids can demonstrate some level of resilience to parasites, they have quite distinct helminth biodiversity, distribution and intensity among different geographical locations and breeds. Heavily infected donkeys may show fewer clinical signs than horses. Altho
