Quantitative anatomical study of male pelvic autonomic plexus and its clinical potential in rectal resection.

The pelvic autonomic nerves innervate the pelvic viscera, and carry a high risk of damage during surgery. This high risk has been ascribed to the complex interrelationship of pelvic paravisceral structures and the difficulty in identifying particular structures, despite the fact that the anatomic characteristics of the pelvic autonomic plexus have been well documented. We dissected ten male embalmed adult cadavers with particular attention to the quantitative parameters of the pelvic plexus and its subsidiary plexus. The right inferior hypogastric plexus and its rectal branch were found to be

Trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias. Pathophysiology and classification.

Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalalgias (TACs) is a grouping of headache syndromes that includes cluster headache, paroxysmal hemicrania and short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT). They are recognized clinically by their episodic, stereotypic attack profile and very often prominent cranial autonomic symptoms, such as lacrimation, conjunctival injection or rhinorrhea. They involve afferent activation of the trigeminal innervation of intracranial pain-producing structures, or the perception of that activation, and reflex activation of the

Retrospective view of the carotid body research of Ronan G. O'Regan.

The Irish experimental physiologist Ronan G. O'Regan has made a substantial contribution to the field of autonomic control of the carotid body. This brief retrospective has been written by one of his former students, one of many to whom the beauty of Nature's design has been revealed through O'Regan's lectures and scientific papers. I shall describe some of his experiments that were performed from 1965 to 1981 in this historical sketch.

Cardiac symptoms related to paroxysmal atrial fibrillation varied with menstrual cycle in a premenopausal woman.

Atrial fibrillation, an arrhythmia observed more frequently in men than women, is induced by both sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nerve activations. The menstrual cycle in premenopausal women has been reported to modulate the autonomic nervous system: parasympathetic activity is dominant in the follicular phase and sympathetic activity is dominant in the luteal phase. However, the relationship between atrial fibrillation and the menstrual cycle has not yet been reported, because this arrhythmia is very rarely detected in premenopausal women. We experienced a 38 year-old woman with pa

Pupillary abnormalities in congenital neurosyphilis.

Pupils in congenital neurosyphilis differ from the classic Argyll-Robertson pupil in acquired cases, and often tend to be large and unreactive. Constriction to pilocarpine in the reported patient would suggest that peripheral parasympathetic damage is responsible for such pupillary findings. Congenital neurosyphilis should be included among the causes of "tonic" pupil.

BOTULISM. STUDIES ON THE MANNER IN WHICH THE TOXIN OF CLOSTRIDIUM BOTULINUM ACTS UPON THE BODY : II. THE EFFECT UPON THE VOLUNTARY NERVOUS SYSTEM.

1. In addition to the effect upon the fibers of the parasympathetic nervous system which was described in a previous report (1), the toxin of Clostridium botilinum. Types A and B, exerts an influence upon the endings of the motor fibers of the voluntary nervous system which leads to a marked susceptibility to fatigue. It has not been determined whether the damage is in the anatomical nerve endings of the somatic motor nerve fibers or upon the myoneural junction, but it is not of the nature of an organic destruction of tissue. 2. There is no effect upon the sensory fibers of the peripheral nerv…

A pilot study: the role of the autonomic nervous system in cardiorespiratory regulation in infant feeding.

AIM: The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the interplay between the parasympathetic (PNS) and sympathetic nervous systems' (SNS) contributions to prefeeding, feeding and satiation in young, healthy infants. METHOD: This prospective study was completed on eleven full-term infants, less than 6 months old. Respiratory rate, heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), electrodermal activity and low-frequency/high-frequency heart rate variability ratio were sampled from the infant during prefeeding, feeding and satiation periods. RESULTS: A repeated-measures ANOVA revealed a significant d

Neuroanatomy of the female abdominopelvic region: A review with application to pelvic pain syndromes.

Pelvic pain can be a life altering disease. Multiple pathologies can affect this region resulting in neurologic issues. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the nerve supply to this region is important for the clinician who treats such patients. The current review outlines the anatomy of the nervous system of the abdominopelvic region with special attention to this anatomy in the female.

Systemic autonomic involvement in episodic cluster headache: a comparison between active and remission periods.

In this study we compared systemic autonomic involvement in episodic cluster headache during active and silent periods. Seventeen patients were studied with sympathetic skin response, lying to standing test, Valsalva manoeuvre, deep breathing test and orthostatic hypotension evaluation. Each of them underwent these tests during active and silent periods. Values were then compared with normal controls. Our data show a parasympathetic, but not sympathetic, involvement. Moreover, this impairment seems to be "chronic", as it persists beyond the active period.
