Psychosocial burden and quality of life of parents with children with univentricular hearts compared to ASD parents and parents of heart-healthy children.

BACKGROUND: Patients with univentricular hearts can only be palliated by a staged surgical procedure that carries a high morbidity and mortality risk. The aim of this study was to examine the emotional demands, psychosocial burden, and quality of life of parents with children with univentricular hearts compared to parents of children with a simple heart defect, those with no heart defect and children with chronic diseases. METHODS: An anonymous questionnaire was created to interview parents about their quality of life, stressors, needs, strategies for coping with illness, and partnership sati

Insecure Attachment to Parents and PTSD among Adolescents: The Roles of Parent-Child Communication, Perceived Parental Depression, and Intrusive Rumination.

Based on attachment theory and a social-cognitive model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), this study examined the roles of parent-child communication, perceived parental depression, and intrusive rumination in the association between insecure attachment to parents and PTSD among adolescents following the Jiuzhaigou earthquake. In this study, 620 adolescents were recruited to complete self-report questionnaires. The results showed that the direct association between anxious attachment and PTSD was significant, but that between avoidant attachment and PTSD was non-significant. In addition

Preparing Occupational Therapists to Support Parenting Occupations: Perspectives from the United States.

Parenting is a valued occupation, yet occupational therapists report uncertainty in supporting parents in adult practice. This study examined parenting-related practices, confidence, preparation, and barriers among seventy-seven occupational therapists in the United States working primarily with adults. Online survey responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Spearman correlations, and Mann-Whitney U tests. Although 96% identified parenting as within occupational therapy's scope and 61% reported providing parenting-related interventions, formal assessment was uncommon; only 6% used …

Bidirectional Associations Between Parenting and Irritability in Early Childhood: Multi-Method Evidence.

OBJECTIVE: Irritability is a common and impairing reason for childhood mental health referral, yet transactional processes between parenting and irritability remain understudied in early childhood, particularly using multi-method approaches. This study examined bidirectional associations between parenting and interview-based child irritability from ages 3 to 6 while accounting for parental psychopathology and child sex. METHOD: Participants were 609 children (54.5% male; 79.5% White, non-Hispanic) recruited at age 3 and followed to age 6. Child irritability was assessed using the Preschool Ag…

Navigating Parenting in Pediatric Oncology: Merging Psychodynamic Theory and Evidence-Based Practice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Parenting a child with a chronic illness such as cancer presents distinct psychological challenges that often disrupt normative parenting patterns. Parents frequently struggle to maintain boundaries in response to their child's heightened emotional needs, leading to overprotective or permissive behaviors. This study revisits Winnicott's theory of the "good enough parent" and explores its application in the context of pediatric oncology. We aim to examine how a psychodynamic framework can be integrated with evidence-based practices to support parental functioning and prom…

Environmental sensitivity, supportive parenting, and the development of attachment and internalizing problems.

Supportive parenting experiences link to secure attachment development, and secure attachment in turn links to children's emotional well-being. However, little is known whether child-factors, like their environmental sensitivity, moderate these associations for better or for worse. We used longitudinal data (three data waves spanning two years) from 614 children (Wave 1: Mage = 10.28; SDage = 0.58; 44% boys). At all waves, attachment was operationalized as children's knowledge of the Secure Base Script with a coded narrative task. Children filled out questionnaires on supportive parenting, the…

[Between care and lockdown: Parenting psychologically vulnerable children during COVID-19-pandemic].

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges for parents, due to the closure of childcare facilities and schools, the shift to working from home, and the loss of support services. AIM: To examine the extent to which COVID-related stress (CRS) and caring for psychiatrically vulnerable children (PVC) influenced parental stress and the experience of psychological basic needs during the first COVID-19 lockdown. METHOD: Parents of PVC (n = 203) and parents of non-PVC (n = 919) completed questionnaires assessing parental stress and psychological needs. Associations were examined

Child Maltreatment and Harsh Parenting: The Role of Maternal Chronic Relational Strains.

While prior research indicates that parents who were maltreated as children are more likely to engage in negative parenting behaviors, less is known about how mothers' social relationships may influence these practices. Yet parenting behaviors are influenced not only by the individual characteristics of the parent and child, but also by the social context that exists around the parent-child dyad. The aim of the current cross-sectional study was to test a model examining the effect of mothers' exposure to child maltreatment on harsh parenting practices, as observed in the lab, and the mediating…

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Fathers' Food Parenting Practices and Children's Diets.

Racial and ethnic disparities in children's diets are prevalent. Little is known about how fathers' food parenting practices may contribute to these disparities. We examined racial and ethnic variations in food parenting practices and their associations with 2-6-year-old children's diets in a cross-sectional sample of U.S. fathers surveyed in 2021-2023 (N = 1015; 16% Asian, 9% Black, 6% Hispanic, 70% White; Mage = 37 years) using path analysis. Fathers' food parenting practices were significantly associated with children's diets, yet little evidence emerged that fathers' food parenting practic…

Early Parenting Effects on Childhood Delay of Gratification and Adolescent Allostatic Load.

Background/Objectives: Early parenting can influence child self-regulatory skills, which are in turn linked to allostatic load (AL)-a predictor of future morbidity and mortality. However, this mechanistic pathway from early parenting to later AL has not been tested using longitudinal data. Methods: We analyzed longitudinal data (N = 1364) from the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development to examine relationships between early childhood (ages 2-3) observed parenting behaviors (i.e., autonomy support, supportive presence and hostility) and a comprehensive index of adolescent (age 15) AL, …

Effectiveness and treatment moderators of parenting interventions in Finnish perinatal primary care.

Perinatal parenting interventions may be important for enhancing parenting quality, but previous research has mostly focused on parental sensitivity. Other important outcomes, such as parental self-efficacy (PSE), have rarely been studied. Research is also contradictory on whether parenting interventions can also enhance maternal mental health and how treatment-related moderators affect treatment outcome. In this study, we examined the effectiveness of three individually tailored perinatal parenting interventions (therapeutic parent-infant work, maternity and child health clinic psychologists,…

Parental Feeding Style, Parenting Stress, and Child Mealtime Behaviors in Cystic Fibrosis.

OBJECTIVE: Nutrition and weight gain significantly contribute to overall health outcomes in children with cystic fibrosis (CF). Strong emphasis is placed on these entities by the CF team, which can cause stress for parents and impact parent and child mealtime behaviors. The current study sought to investigate the relationship between parental feeding style, parenting stress, and parent and child mealtime behaviors in families of children with CF. METHODS: Forty-five parents of a child with CF between the ages of 2 and 10 years were recruited during a CF clinic appointment. They completed surv…

Maternal Emotional and Behavioral Regulation/Dysregulation and Parenting Practices: A Systematic Review.

Emotional and behavioral regulations are crucial for the development of perceptive, responsive, and flexible parenting. Moreover, maternal emotional dysregulation constitutes a risk for maltreatment behaviors. The present study aimed to conduct a systematic review of empirical studies on the associations between mothers' emotional and behavioral regulations and parenting practices with their children or adolescents. A systematic review was conducted, including papers that addressed these variables, analyzing the direct effects, and moderation or mediation effects of maternal emotional and beha…

Paternal activation parenting and growth in children's inhibitory control across early childhood.

Activation parenting (AP) is a parenting construct derived from research and theory on paternal caregiving that includes behaviors that challenge children to approach novel situations, explore their environments, and take physical and socioemotional risks through a balance of encouragement and limit-setting. Although components of AP have been linked to different domains of children's self-regulation skills, comprehensive measures of AP and longitudinal research on families from low socioeconomic backgrounds are lacking. These limitations greatly constrain our understanding of the potential be…

Dimensions of Warm Parenting Attributions Differentiate Conduct Problem Subtypes in Young Children.

Understanding the developmental psychopathology of child conduct problems (CP) has been advanced by differentiating subtypes based on levels of internalizing problems (INT) and/or callous-unemotional (CU) traits (i.e., low empathy/guilt, poor motivation, shallow/deficient affect). The current study sought to elucidate prior inconsistencies in the role of warm/positive and harsh/negative parenting subcomponents in CP by differentiating subtypes on the basis of INT and CU traits. Parents of 135 young children (M age = 4.21 years, SD = 1.29) referred to specialty clinics for the treatment of CP c…

[Intrusive touch of borderline parenting and risk of disorganized attachment of children].

The development of attachment in toddlers is linked to the quality of their early interactions with their mother and father. The impact of interactive dysfunctions, in relation to different parental circumstances, constitutes an important risk for the development of disorganized attachment. Although this aspect is fairly well known, few studies have been done on the children of people with borderline personality disorder.

Mechanisms of Change in Population-Based Parenting Interventions for Children and Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Developing an effective population-level system of evidence-based parenting support capable of shifting (at a population level) rates of child maltreatment and social, emotional, and behavioral problems in children requires an integrated theory of change. This paper presents a systems-contextual model of change and identifies modifiable mechanisms that can potentially explain population-level changes in parenting and child outcomes. METHOD: Using the Triple P-Positive Parenting Program as an exemplar of a tiered, multi-level system of evidence-based parenting interventions, we disc…

Spanking and Corporal Punishment Parenting Practices and Child Development: A Systematic Review.

Violence against children is a significant problem, particularly during early childhood development. Spanking and other forms of corporal punishment in child-rearing have been used by families worldwide to correct children's unwanted behaviors. Despite previous studies focusing on the negative consequences of these parental practices, open questions remain. The present study aimed to systematically review the empirical studies published in scientific literature that examined the associations between parenting practices of spanking and corporal punishment of mothers and their children's behavio…

Parenting and Psychological Health in Youth with Type 1 Diabetes: Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a demanding chronic illness that may result in poorer psychological health in youth. Fortunately, certain parenting practices may be protective against adverse outcomes. However, a systematic review of these relationships in youth with T1D is lacking. Thus, the current systematic review examined the literature on parenting and child psychological health outcomes (both internalizing and externalizing symptoms) in youth with T1D. Particular attention is paid to how demographic factors are associated with these relationships. METHODS: PRISMA guidelines for sys…
