Residential green space and incidence of cardiovascular disease: Evidence from a nationwide population-based study.

Residential green space may be an environmental determinant of cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, longitudinal evidence based on structural measures of green space in nationwide populations remains limited in South Korea. We investigated the association between the proportion of residential green space and incident CVD, with particular attention paid to variation by degree of urbanization. Data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort, including 321,999 participants without prior CVD who underwent health examinations between 2010 and 2012, were analyzed. Residentia

Restorative effects of small urban parks: a multi-method study using eye-tracking and psychophysiological measures in Fuzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Rapid urbanization has intensified psychological stress among urban residents. As highly accessible forms of urban green space, small urban parks play a vital role in fostering psychological resilience and restorative experiences. However, in high-density cities such as Fuzhou, the underlying restorative mechanisms of different types of small parks-along with the moderating effects of gender and specific landscape elements-remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: This study adopted a multi-method approach, incorporating psychological assessment via the Perceived Restorativeness

Association Between Park Use and Moderate-to-Vigorous Activity During COVID-19 Years among a Cohort of Low-Income Youth.

Neighborhood parks are important venues to support moderate-to-vigorous (MVPA) activity. There has been a noticeable increase promoting physical activity among youth in neighborhood parks. This paper aims to assess the association between park use and MVPA among low-income youth in a large urban area. We recruited a cohort of 434 youth participants during the COVID pandemic years (2020-2022) from low-income households in Washington, D.C. We collected multiple data components: accelerometry, survey, and electronic health record data. We explored the bivariate relationship between the accelerome

Associations of Park Use with Physical Activity in Renovated Parks Serving Low-Income Communities in New York City: Insights from the Community Parks Initiative.

Parks have the potential to encourage physical activity among urban communities. However, existing research on the link between park use and physical activity has produced inconsistent results. Mixed findings in the past may be due in part to differences in park quality across studies. The aim of this study was to explore the association between park use and physical activity among New York City adults in low-income communities that recently received city-sponsored park renovation as part of the Community Parks Initiative (CPI). Using population-weighted survey data from eight neighborhoods wi

Socioeconomic deprivation modifies green space and mental health associations: A within person study.

Living in an area with good availability and accessibility of residential green spaces such as parks, woodlands, and residential gardens can improve mental health and reduce the global disease burden. Unlike for physical health, it is not well understood if mental health and green space associations might be modified by local area deprivation. Existing evidence for this association comes from cross-sectional studies, widely considered vulnerable to confounding and bias. Individual time-invariant mental health status, personality, and other factors may result in positive effect modification on

Origin and modern microbial ecology of secondary mineral deposits in Lehman Caves, Great Basin National Park, NV, USA.

Lehman Caves is an extensively decorated high desert cave that represents one of the main tourist attractions in Great Basin National Park, Nevada. Although traditionally considered a water table cave, recent studies identified abundant speleogenetic features consistent with a hypogenic and, potentially, sulfuric acid origin. Here, we characterized white mineral deposits in the Gypsum Annex (GA) passage to determine whether these secondary deposits represent biogenic minerals formed during sulfuric acid corrosion and explored microbial communities associated with these and other mineral deposi

Trichinella Infection in Culled Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) from El Palmar National Park, Argentina, and Exposure Risk in Humans and Dogs Consuming Wild Boar Meat.

Trichinellosis is a foodborne disease caused by ingestion of raw or undercooked meat containing Trichinella spp. larvae. Consumption of wild boar (Sus scrofa) meat represents an important source of human trichinellosis worldwide. In El Palmar National Park (EPNP), Argentina, invasive alien wild boars are controlled and meat from culled animals is released for public consumption following on-site artificial digestion (AD) testing. Meat trimmings and offal from the control program are often used as food for dogs (Canis familiaris). We evaluated infection and exposure to Trichinella spp. in wild

Associations of long-term exposure to air pollution and green space with reproductive hormones among women undergoing assisted reproductive technology: A longitudinal study.

Studies investigating the association between long-term exposure to air pollution (AP)/green space and female reproductive hormones are still limited. Furthermore, their interactive effects remain unclear. Our study sought to explore the separate and interactive impacts of AP/green space on reproductive hormones among women undergoing assisted reproductive technology. We measured estradiol (E2), progesterone (P), testosterone (T), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the longitudinal assisted reproduction cohort in Anhui, China. The annual mean concentrations of air pollutants were calc

Exposure to nature for children with autism spectrum disorder: Benefits, caveats, and barriers.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the fastest growing developmental disorder in countries across the world. Although recent studies have demonstrated the health benefits of nature for typically developing children and children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, it is unclear whether these benefits extend to children with ASD. In this study, we investigated whether benefits associated with exposure to nature could be observed by parents of children diagnosed with ASD. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 parents and caregivers of children on the spectrum from two cities i

Association of Park Size, Access and Neighbourhood Walkability with Physical Activity and Obesity: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

BACKGROUND: We examined whether higher access to parks and greenspace is independently associated with an increase in physical activity and lower rates of obesity when neighbourhood walkability is accounted for and whether neighbourhood walkability and park access have synergistic effects on these outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from the Canadian Community Health Survey between 2007 and 2014 for adults aged 20 to 74 in Ontario, Canada. Neighbourhood-level park access exposures included size of parks and number of parks within 800 m of residential areas, and neigh

Spatiotemporal variation of vegetation coverage and the response to typhoon disturbance in National Park of Hainan Tropical Rainforest.

The fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is a key indicator for characterizing ecosystem changes. Combined multi-source remote sensing data from 1995 to 2024, with Theil-Sen-Median trend analysis, geographic detector and XGBoost methods, we systematically investigated the spatiotemporal variations of FVC, driving factors, and the impact of typhoon disturbances. The results showed that the average FVC reached 0.92, with an average annual growth rate of 0.4% from 1995 to 2024. The year of 2007 was identified as a significant turning point in FVC, with the average area proportion of high vegetation

High prevalence of Trypanosoma spp. and apparent trypanocidal drugs inefficacy in cattle in Al Radom National Park, Sudan.

Trypanosomosis is a major infectious disease affecting cattle in Sudan. In South Darfur, data on cattle trypanosomosis has been limited since the Darfur civil war (2003-2007). This study assessed the prevalence and distribution of Trypanosoma spp. in cattle in the tsetse fly endemic Al Radom National Park, and collected questionnaire data on trypanocide use and apparent efficacy. Blood from 509 cattle across four regions was analysed. Of these, 3.1%, 19.8% and 35.8% tested positive for trypanosomes by microscopy, buffy coat technique and PCR, respectively. At the regional level, prevalence was

Green Cities, Healthier Children: The Effect of Expanding Urban Green Space on Body Weight for Primary School Starters.

The discussion on tackling childhood obesity is often centered around fostering physical activity. A potential relationship yet overlooked could run from providing the proper environment for healthy lifestyles to reduced weight problems. A unique quasi-experimental setting of transforming former airport grounds to a large urban green space allows me to apply a difference-in-differences approach within an intention-to-treat framework, comparing several weight outcomes of residential children to children living further away before and after park opening. I use new administrative data on the Berl

Assessing visitor use impact on antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in soil and water environments of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been detected in soil and water in close proximity to anthropogenic sources, but the extent to which human impact plays into ARB and ARGs entering the environment is not well described. This study aimed to determine the impact of visitor use on ARB and ARGs in a national park environment. Soil (n = 240) and water (n = 210) samples were collected across a gradient of human activity in Rocky Mountain National Park and analyzed for bacteria resistant to doxycycline, levofloxacin, and vancomycin. Amount of physical eff

Nitrous oxide recreational abuse presenting with myeloneuropathy and mimicking Guillain-Barre syndrome.

The recreational use of nitrous oxide (N2O) is increasing in festivals, university parties, clubs, private residences, and parks. The abuse of N2O has serious complications of the central and peripheral nervous system. In this article, we report a case of a 28-year-old previously healthy man who presented with a three-day history of rapidly progressive leg numbness, tingling, and weakness with gait instability and frequent falls. He had a history of marijuana use and daily inhalation of N2O (approximately 20 whippets daily over 2-3 years). He was admitted with a presumptive diagnosis of Guilla
