Unicystic mucoepidermoid carcinoma presenting as a salivary duct cyst.

A cystic swelling in the parotid gland should lead to a differential diagnosis that includes benign cystic lesion of the gland, benign tumors that are frequently associated with cystic degeneration or entirely cystic de novo, or even a malignant neoplasm. The case presented is that of a cystic parotid swelling of 2 years' duration in a 52-year-old female patient. The clinical differentials in the present case were reviewed and were entirely different from the final histological diagnosis of low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The uniqueness of this case is the very rare unicystic presentation

An unusual case of a synovial sarcoma of the parotid gland in an elderly patient.

Synovial sarcoma is a malignant soft tissue neoplasm which mostly occurs in adolescents and young adults. The tumor is rare in the head and neck region although it has been described at virtually every anatomic site. Synovial sarcoma can mimic benign lesions clinically and histologically and is therefore sometimes difficult to diagnose. We present a case of a synovial sarcoma in the parotid gland of a 72-year old patient. Immunohistochemistry and genetic testing of the tumor were performed to confirm the diagnosis. The treatment options are discussed. The case shows that synovial sarcoma shoul

Application of the Milan System for Risk Stratification and Its Comparison with a Previous Reporting System of Parotid Gland Cytopathology in a Tertiary Care Centre.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the recently proposed Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) with the four-tiered reporting system (FTRS) followed at our institute. METHODS: Parotid gland fine-needle aspirates reported over a period of 5 years were analysed. These aspirates had been placed into 4 categories according to the FTRS: unsatisfactory (UNS), no evidence of malignancy/negative (NEG), inconclusive for malignancy (INC), and diagnostic for malignancy/positive (POS). Aspirates with follow-up histopathology were then categorized according to the MSRSGC as follows: non-diag

Papillary cystadenocarcinoma of submandibular salivary gland: a rare case report.

Papillary cystadenocarcinoma is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm characterized by cysts and papillary endophytic projections. It was first defined in 1991 by World Health organization as a separate entity. Major locations of this neoplasm are the parotid gland, the sublingual gland, and minor salivary glands, while occurrence in the submandibular gland is extremely rare. We present a case of papillary cystadenocarinoma arising from the submandibular gland in a 67-year-old male patient. Further, we have discussed the cytological and histopathological features of this rare entity and reviewe

[Determining the degree of risk of postoperative complications in patients with a benign tumor of the parotid salivary gland].

THE AIM OF THE STUDY: Determination of the risk of postoperative complications in patients after surgical treatment of benign neoplasms of the parotid salivary glands. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The results of treatment of 228 patients with benign neoplasms of the parotid salivary gland in the period from 2019 to 2021 were analyzed. A questionnaire of 7 questions was formed the answers to which allowed patients to be assigned to a certain risk group: low, medium, high or extremely high. This gradation allows choosing the optimal method and scope of surgical treatment for each patient individually.

Clinical and oncological outcomes after surgical excision of parotid gland tumours in patients aged over 80 years.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the surgical and long-term outcomes of a series of patients aged over 80 years, operated on for parotid neoplasms. Among 614 parotidectomies for neoplasms performed between 1998 and 2008, 34 patients (5.5%) aged over 80 years were identified retrospectively. Pathological examination showed a malignant tumour in 24 and a benign tumour in 10 cases. Overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were determined by Kaplan-Meier analysis. A search for parameters that could influence the postoperative complication rate and long-term outcomes was car…

Taller-than-wide as a red flag for malignancy in ultrasound of parotid gland tumors.

PURPOSE: Preoperative evaluation of malignancy in parotid gland tumors is challenging due to heterogeneous and non-specific tissue characteristics. The taller-than-wide (TTW) criterion, validated in thyroid and breast tumors, may also be relevant for parotid gland tumors, as malignant growths typically invade beyond microanatomic boundaries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, 140 parotid neoplasms were evaluated via preoperative ultrasound and definitive histopathology. TTW was defined as the dimension perpendicular to the skin exceeding the largest parallel dimension. TTW wa…

Basal Cell Adenoma of the Parotid Gland: A Rare Disease Entity.

Neoplasms of the salivary glands are of rare incidence, have a vague presentation, and follow a complex long-term clinical course. Both minor and major salivary glands have been implicated in dysplastic transformation, with parotid gland tumors being the most notable. Most of these tumors are benign in nature and are typically diagnosed and classified based on their histopathological presentation. In this report, we exhibit a rare case of basal cell adenomas (BCA), localized to the right parotid gland, in a 69-year-old male patient. Volume acquisition computed tomography (CT) imaging of the re

Textural Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Images as an Additional Evaluation Tool of Parotid Glands in Sjögren-Primarily Findings.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) plays a leading role in diagnosing soft tissue pathologies, especially in the head and neck. It is increasingly popular for evaluating salivary gland issues like neoplasms and Sjogren's Syndrome. Advanced MRI methods, including MRI sialography and texture analysis, offer non-invasive alternatives, enhancing MRI's role. This study focused on the relationship between the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and T2-weighted MRI sialography and texture analysis (TA) of parotid glands in children with and without Sjogren's Syndrome (SS). Using 3.0 Tesla MRI with DWI

Increased incidence of Warthin tumours of the parotid gland: a 42-year evaluation.

AIM: To evaluate the frequency of Warthin tumours among parotid neoplasms over the past 42 years in a population in rural Germany and to identify potential risk factors. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case note evaluation from all patients who underwent parotid surgery between 1975 and 2017. The 42-year time period was evenly split into four quartiles. RESULTS: A Warthin tumour was diagnosed in 265 out of 806 patients (32.9%). The frequency of Warthin tumour increased steadily from 20.6% in the first decade between 1975 and 1986 to 44.9% in the fourth decade between 2008 and 2017. The…

Diagnostic value of preoperative fine needle aspiration cytology in parotid gland tumors.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland masses constitute a broad spectrum of lesions ranging from non-neoplastic to benign and malignant lesions. Parotid is the largest salivary gland and constitutes 75% to 80% of all salivary gland areas. 80% of parotid lesions are benign and 20% are malignant. METHODS: Two-hundred and eight-six patients who underwent aspiration cytology in the pathology laboratory between January 1995 and January 2019, evaluated with a sufficient sample and diagnosed, and subsequently underwent surgical treatment were included in the study. RESULTS: 47.9% (137) of the patients were fe

Small cell carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.

Small cell carcinoma (SCC) is a high-grade malignancy usually encountered in the lungs but also seen in almost any site including the salivary glands. SCC is important to recognize because it often metastasizes widely and is treated with systemic chemotherapy. Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma is a malignant epithelial neoplasm arising in a pre-existing benign mixed tumor (i.e., pleomorphic adenoma, PA). While virtually any salivary carcinoma can arise from a PA, to our knowledge SCC ex-PA has not been described. We report a case of a woman presenting with fullness of the right neck and a parot

Papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the parotid gland: a rare sub-variant of salivary gland adenocarcinoma.

Papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the salivary gland is a very rare malignant neoplasm accounting for only 2% of all salivary gland lesions. In 1991 it was first included as a separate entity in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of salivary gland tumors and in 2017 WHO Classification, the tumor was clubbed as a sub-variant of adenocarcinoma, not otherwise specified. It most commonly occurs in the major salivary glands. Herein we report a case of salivary papillary cystadenocarcinoma in a 54-year-old female, who presented with rapid enlargement of the right parotid swelling. Base

Primary Merkel cell carcinoma of the parotid gland.

Primary Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a neuroendocrine tumor that typically affects older whites. It usually originates in the dermis, but in rare instances it has arisen in other primary sites, including the oral mucosa and the parotid gland. Explanations for the presence of MCC in these atypical locations have included theories of malignant transformation and neuroendocrine migration. We describe the case of a 35-year-old white woman who had an MCC in the parotid gland and no evidence of any other primary cutaneous lesion. A left superficial parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation was

Ectopic Warthin's tumour presenting as a neck mass.

INTRODUCTION: Warthin's tumour usually involves the parotid gland. However, it can also arise from ectopic salivary tissue in the para-parotid and latero-cervical lymph nodes. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 60-year-old man with a 3-month history of a smooth, mobile mass on the right side of the neck. Computed tomography (CT) scanning (coronal, axial and sagittal sections) showed a cystic lesion in the right upper neck without connection to the major salivary glands (8 x 4 x 3 cm). Complete surgical excision with a transverse neck incision was performed. Histological findings of the spe

Fine-Needle Aspiration of Parotid Gland Sialoblastoma. Two New Cases and Literature Review.

Sialoblastoma is an exceedingly rare, low-grade malignancy, most frequently arising in the parotid gland. Only four case reports detailing the cytomorphology of this neoplasm exist in the English literature. Here, we describe the cytological features, histopathology, and clinical data of sialoblastomas presented at birth in two additional patients. Both neoplasms were initially examined by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) followed by surgical excision of the tumors. Smears showed hypercellularity and basaloid round to oval cells isolated or arranged in three-dimensional clusters. Papillary and aci
