BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida is a well-recognized zoonotic agent following dog or cat bites or scratches. Nevertheless, prosthetic joint infection caused by P. multocida are rarely reported.
METHOD: We report here a series of six cases of prosthetic joint infection caused by P. multocida managed at a referral centre for the treatment of bone and joint infection in southern France. We also reviewed the 26 cases reported in literature.
RESULTS: The mean age of our cases was 74 years [±8.2, range 63-85]. In majority of our cases (5 cases) were associated with knee prostheses and one case w…

Host-pathogen interactions of Pasteurella multocida isolates of different origin were studied in a mouse model, focusing on pathology, bacterial load and expression of the metalloproteinase MMP9 and its inhibitor TIMP1. Intranasal inoculation with one of three doses (10(6), 10(4), 10(2)CFU) of an isolate from porcine pneumonia or fowl cholera showed marked differences between the two isolates. The avian isolate was highly pathogenic with severe signs of necrotizing pneumonia, liver necrosis and high bacterial load in lung and liver. Clinical signs and pathology related to the porcine isolate w…

Pasteurella multocida was isolated from poultry on six farms (one free-range duck farm, one free-range turkey farm, one conventional enclosed turkey farm, and three free-range layer farms) suffering fowl cholera outbreaks. In addition, historical isolates from previous outbreaks were available for the conventional turkey farm and the three free-range layer farms. The isolates were serotyped using the Heddleston scheme and genotyped using multi-locus sequencing typing. In the current outbreaks, two of the farms had two different sequence types (STs) of P. multocida in the investigated outbreak …

Pasteurella multocida is a bacterial organism that commonly causes cellulitis after animal bites, especially cat bites. We report an unusual vesiculopustular infection of the hand following a domestic cat bite. Pasteurella multocida and Staphylococcus aureus were cultured from the wound and the patient was treated with amoxicillin-clavulanate potassium. Further history revealed that the patient's cat had nibbled on her hand. Pasteurella usually is resistant to many of the typical empiric antibiotics used to treat skin infections. Amoxicillin-clavulanate potassium (500 mg 3 times daily) is the …

A total of 63 isolates of Pasteurella multocida from Australian poultry, all associated with fowl cholera outbreaks, and three international reference strains, representing the three subspecies within P. multocida were used to develop a multi-locus sequence typing scheme. Primers were designed for conserved regions of seven house-keeping enzymes -adk, est, gdh, mdh, pgi, pmi and zwf - and internal fragments of 570-784 bp were sequenced for all isolates and strains. The number of alleles at the different loci ranged from 11 to 20 and a total of 29 allelic profiles or sequence types were recogni…

An outbreak of pasteurellosis with high mortality was recorded in indigenous pigs in India. The presence of Pasteurella multocida in samples collected from dead pigs was detected by smear examination and isolation, and later by P. multocida specific polymerase chain reaction (PM-PCR). P. multocida was detected in all the samples collected from dead pigs, with nine strains ultimately isolated. All the isolates were positive by PM-PCR. Six isolates showed CAPA and three were of CAPD capsular types. All the isolates were negative for toxigenic gene (toxA). The isolates were sensitive to oxytetrac…

The dynamics and duration of maternally derived antibodies as well as the onset of acquired immunity against Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida in range-pastured beef calves were investigated. Two groups of unvaccinated cattle were used in this study. Serum antibody responses were measured by enzyme-linked immunoassay for antibodies of the IgG1, IgG2 and IgM isotypes binding M. haemolytica whole cells (WC) or leukotoxin (LKT) and P. multocida outer membrane proteins (OMPs). Comparisons of mean antibody responses to M. haemolytica LKT and WC and P. multocida OMPs were made within …

Thirty-five isolates of Pasteurella multocida from the vagina and respiratory tract of sheep were compared by analysing their capsular polysaccharide types and outer membrane protein profiles. The phylogenetic relationships of selected isolates with respect to reference strains of P. multocida were also determined by comparative 16S rRNA sequence analysis. Three capsular types, A, D and F, and three major outer membrane protein types were identified, and there were four different combinations of these characteristics which probably marked four individual clones of P. multocida. Strains represe…

One hundred and fifty-eight porcine strains of Pasteurella multocida, recovered primarily from cases of pneumonic pasteurellosis or progressive atrophic rhinitis (PAR) in England and Wales, were characterized by determination of their capsular types, presence or absence of the toxA gene and molecular mass heterogeneity of the heat-modifiable (OmpA) and porin (OmpH) proteins. Eighteen groups (clones) of strains were identified on the basis of specific combinations of capsular type, toxA status and outer-membrane protein (OMP)-type. The data provided evidence that different subpopulations of P. …

The properties of an extracellular neuraminidase produced by a Pasteurella multocida A:3 strain that was isolated in a case of bovine pneumonia were examined during growth in a defined medium. This enzyme (isolated from concentrated culture supernatants of P. multocida A:3) was active against N-acetylneuramin lactose, human alpha-1-acid glycoprotein, fetuin, colominic acid, and bovine submaxillary mucin. Enzyme elaboration was correlated with the growth of the organism in a defined medium, with maximum quantities produced in the stationary phase. The enzyme was purified by a combination of amm…

Heat-labile toxin from a cell sonicate of a virulent type-D strain of Pasteurella multocida was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation followed by ion exchange chromatography, gel filtration chromatography, and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Toxic activity was assayed during toxin purification by cytopathic effect in Vero or bovine embryonic lung cell cultures. Toxicity for cells correlated with dermonecrosis in guinea pig skin. Toxicity was accounted for by a single protein with a molecular weight of 149,000, as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.…

The interaction of Bordetella bronchiseptica or Pasteurella multocida with swine nasal epithelial cells was studied in vitro. The mean number of B. bronchiseptica organisms adhered per cell was about three times as high as that of P. multocida (P less than 0.01), and the adherence was specifically inhibited by the homologous antiserum prepared with the whole-cell antigen of each bacterium. The poor affinity of P. multocida to the swine nasal mucosa as compared with that of B. bronchiseptica was also demonstrated in the cultured fragments of the nasal mucosa. When observed with a scanning elect…

Thirty independently derived reference strains and clinical isolates of Pasteurella multocida were tested to determine their potential for acquiring adaptive resistance to oxytetracycline in an effort to better understand the prolonged high efficacy of the antibiotic for pasteurellosis in poultry. All reference strains and clinical isolates exhibited uniform susceptibility as measured with the broth dilution method. None of the strains or isolates readily acquired significant resistance when grown in subinhibitory oxytetracycline levels under the conditions employed. These data support the con…

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of multidrug-resistant bacteria has been rising at an alarming rate, posing a serious threat to both human and animal health. However, the mechanisms by which bacteria acquire antibiotic tolerance and subsequently develop resistance remain incompletely understood.
METHODS: In this study, Pasteurella multocida, a common pathogen in the animal husbandry industry, was exposed to enrofloxacin, and genome resequencing, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses were performed to elucidate the adaptive mechanisms of P. multocida under fluoroquinolone-induced stress.

Objective To determine the clinical significance of sputum Pasteurella multocida in adults with structural lung disease by operationally distinguishing infection from colonization and describing outcomes of pathogen-directed therapy. Methods We performed a single-center, retrospective case study. Infection was defined a priori by new or worsening lower-respiratory symptoms at the time of culture, supported by inflammatory or radiologic changes; isolation without symptoms was classified as colonization. Two pulmonologists blinded to the clinical data reviewed the chest computed tomography scans…
