Privacy and ethical challenges of the Amelogenin sex test in forensic paternity/kinship analysis: Insights from a 13-year case history.

The Amelogenin sex test included in forensic DNA typing kits has the potential to identify congenital conditions such as differences/disorders of sex development (DSD). It can also reveal mismatches between genotypic sex and gender marker in identity documents of transgender persons who obtained legal gender recognition. In a 13-year case history of paternity/kinship tests, involving n = 962 females and n = 1001 males, two mismatches between Amelogenin sex test (male) and gender marker (female), and three cases of chromosomal DSD (Klinefelter syndrome) were observed. The concrete risk of obser…

Recurrence of preeclampsia: effects of gestational age at delivery of the first pregnancy, body mass index, paternity, and interval between births.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to establish estimates for recurrence risk of preeclampsia based on gestational age at delivery of the first pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia and to determine whether interbirth interval, paternity, and body mass index (BMI) modify that risk in women with prior preeclampsia. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based, cohort study was conducted using data from Missouri maternally linked birth certificates. The cohort included women who had 2 singleton births between 1989 and 1997: 6157 women with preeclampsia and 97,703 women without preeclampsia at the ti…

Paternal and/or Maternal Blackberry (Rubus spp.) Polyphenolic Extract Consumption Improved Paternal Fertility and Differentially Affected Female Offspring Antioxidant Capacity and Metabolic Programming in a Mouse Model.

Dietary polyphenols' role in early life is not clear. While accumulating studies show both beneficial and deleterious effects of maternal consumption of these bioactive compounds on offspring's adult health, very few studies have focused on the impact of paternal consumption. In addition, the potential interaction of combined parental polyphenol consumption is still not known. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of maternal (gestation/lactation) and/or paternal (preconception) blackberry polyphenol (anthocyanins, ellagitannins, and quercetin) methanolic extract co

Transgenerational Effects of Paternal in Utero Arsenic Exposure on MASLD-like Phenotypes.

Previous study indicated that early-life arsenic (As) exposure caused adulthood metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)-like phenotypes. This study aimed to investigate the impacts of paternal in utero As exposure on MASLD-like phenotypes in offspring. Pregnant dams received NaAsO2 (15 mg/L) through drinking water. In utero As-exposed male pups were designated as F0 mice and mated with untreated females to produce F1 offspring. F1 males were subsequently mated with untreated females to generate F2 offspring, both without further As exposure. MASLD-like phenotypes were

Psychometric properties of the paternal support scale for breastfeeding in the Iranian fathers population.

PROBLEM: The support of fathers is a crucial factor for successful breastfeeding. However, there has been a lack of a validated tool to measure this in Iran, which has impeded targeted assessment and intervention. BACKGRUND: Breastfeeding provides essential health benefits for infants. Paternal support plays a significant role in its continuation, highlighting the importance of having a culturally adapted measurement instrument within the Iranian context. METHODS: This methodological study used a cross-sectional design and selected 460 Iranian fathers through multi‑stage cluster sampling (de

Associations of pregnancy complications with paternal cardiovascular risk: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Early cardiovascular disease risk detection opportunities are limited in men, whereas gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension and preeclampsia are risk indicators in women. We hypothesised adverse pregnancy outcomes also signal risk in fathers, due to shared environments and behaviours. METHODS: Our retrospective cohort study included fathers whose female partners had at least two singleton deliveries between April 1990 and December 2012. We examined population-based data up to April 2019 from Quebec province, Canada (health administrative databases, birth, stillbirth and d

The influence of paternal preconception health on infant birth weight: A scoping review.

Birth weight is an important determinant of infant growth and development associated with neonatal morbidity (e.g., respiratory distress, hypoglycemia) and mortality, as well as long-term health risks such as developmental delays and chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, type 2 diabetes) in later life. These adverse health outcomes are particularly concerning when infants are born small or large for their gestational age. A potential strategy to improve optimal birth weight is preconception care, with consistent evidence demonstrating a relationship between maternal preconception health and infant

Paternal intergenerational thyroid disruption in zebrafish induced by environmental prednisone exposure.

Environmental pollutants adversely affect both adult organisms and their offspring. Prednisone, a synthetic glucocorticoid frequently detected in surface water, harms aquatic organisms like sheepshead minnows, tadpoles, and zebrafish (Danio rerio). However, data on its effects on the thyroid endocrine system of zebrafish and its intergenerational toxicity are currently lacking. This study exposed adult male zebrafish to environmentally relevant prednisone concentrations (0-500 ng/L) for 60 days to explore potential thyroid endocrine disruption in both parents and offspring. Research findings s

Paternal sleep deprivation and cardiac dysfunction in offspring: A perspective of myocardial hypertrophy.

The objective of this work is to assess the effects and potential process of paternal acute sleep deprivation on cardiac function in their offspring. Male and female C57BL/6N mice aged 8-9 weeks (n = 4-5 mice/group) were used. Male mice were selected to construct an acute sleep deprivation model using the modified multiple platform method (MMPM) and mated with normal female mice. After gestation, the weight change of offspring mice was observed and recorded. At the time of 10 weeks, the changes of cardiac function were evaluated by blood pressure, heart rate and echocardiography; cardiac histo

The impact of maternal versus paternal imprisonment on their children's health: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Rates of imprisonment for both women and men are high in England and Wales yet no official records report the number of people in prisons who are parents. Reports suggested 54% of people in prison have children under the age of 18 years which is estimated to affect 312,000 children annually. Research has examined the impact of parental imprisonment on their children, but little is known about the health and wellbeing outcomes for children who experience maternal versus paternal imprisonment. The Prison Reform Trust reported only 9% of children live with their father at the time of

Hormonal changes in first-time human fathers in relation to paternal investment.

In many biparental species, males experience hormonal changes across the transition to fatherhood that prepare them for their new caregiving role. In humans, cross-sectional comparisons have revealed hormonal differences between fathers and nonfathers, however it is not clear when hormone levels change in new fathers, how such changes relate to paternal involvement and attachment, or even whether men with particular hormonal profiles are more likely to become fathers. In this longitudinal study, we aimed to elucidate the trajectory of hormonal changes in new fathers with greater temporal resol

Impact of Maternal Age on the Repairing Capacity of Oocytes on Paternal DNA Damage.

Sperm DNA fragmentation is a primary cause of male infertility, affecting ART outcomes and success rates. Sperm has no DNA repair mechanisms because it is transcriptionally quiet. Oocytes' repairing capacity is one of the suggested methods to overcome the situation. However, based on the hypothesis that oocyte age may also have an impact on this talent, we aimed to reveal the role of female age in repairing sperm DNA damage in our study. A total of 540 couples undergoing ICSI were grouped based on the maternal age, and the groups were further divided into two groups based on the severity of DN

Familial factors rather than paternal age contribute to the aetiology of epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Whether paternal age associated with offspring's epilepsy risk is a cause of de novo mutation as men age, or just an association due to confounding factors, is still unclear. METHODS: We performed a population-based, multi-generation and sibling comparison study in Taiwan, which included 2 751 232 singletons born in 2001-17 who were followed until 2020. Of these, 819 371/826 087 with information on paternal/maternal grandparents were selected for multi-generation analyses and 1 748 382 with sibling(s) were selected for sibling comparison. Cox proportional hazard regression was use

Transcriptomic effects of paternal cocaine-seeking on the reward circuitry of male offspring.

It has been previously established that paternal development of a strong incentive motivation for cocaine can predispose offspring to develop high cocaine-seeking behavior, as opposed to sole exposure to the drug that results in drug resistance in offspring. However, the adaptive changes of the reward circuitry have not been fully elucidated. To infer the key nuclei and possible hub genes that determine susceptibility to addiction in offspring, rats were randomly assigned to three groups, cocaine self-administration (CSA), yoked administration (Yoke), and saline self-administration (SSA), and

Patterns in paternal and maternal filicide: A comparative analysis of filicide cases in Turkey.

Filicide is the act of a parent killing their own offspring. Previous studies indicate that there are both commonalities and distinctions between filicides committed by mothers and fathers. The main objective of this study was to compare maternal and paternal filicide with a major focus on clinical and sociodemographic features of perpetrators, incident details, and victims. Filicide cases were examined at the bedded unit of the Expertise Department of Observation of the Council of Forensic Medicine that were referred by the Turkish Ministry of Justice. A total of 51 perpetrators and 57 victim
