The Predictability of the Surgical Outcomes of Class III Patients in the Transverse Dimension-A Study of Three-Dimensional Assessment.

This study aimed to assess the outcomes of planned maxillary surgical movements in the transverse direction in patients possessing a Class III skeletal pattern. The available consecutive patients' records were retrospectively reviewed. Only those possessing a Class III skeletal pattern, and for whom the same virtual planning system was used, were enrolled. The waferless technique was used to guide the jawbone repositioning. A representative triangle in the virtual maxilla of each stage was used to validate the planned surgical movements (PSMs) and the outcome discrepancy (OD). The linear and a

Pulmonary Congestion Assessed by Lung Ultrasound and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients With ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction.

Background: Lung ultrasound (LUS) shows a higher sensitivity when compared with physical examination for the detection of pulmonary congestion. The objective of our study was to evaluate the association of pulmonary congestion assessed by LUS after reperfusion therapy with cardiovascular outcomes in patients with ST-segment Elevation acute Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) who received reperfusion therapy. Methods: A prospective observational study including patients with STEMI from the PHASE-Mx study. LUS was performed in four thoracic sites (two sites in each hemithorax). We categorized particip

Sequential organ failure assessment score as a predictor of the outcomes of patients hospitalized for classical or exertional heatstroke.

Heatstroke is a life-threatening event that affects people worldwide. Currently, there are no established tools to predict the outcomes of heatstroke. Although the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score is a promising tool for judging the severity of critically ill patients. Therefore, in this study, we investigated whether the SOFA score could predict the outcome of patients hospitalized with severe heatstroke, including the classical and exertional types, by using data from a Japanese nationwide multicenter observational registry. We performed retrospective subanalyses of the Japan

Assessment of clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of pediatric patients with intracardiac thrombosis: a single-center experience.

The prevalence of intracardiac thrombus (ICT) is gradually increasing, though it is rare among children. Data related to the occurrence of ICT among children are limited, and treatment recommendations have been made utilizing adult guidelines. The primary objective of this study is to determine associated factors, management, and outcomes of intracardiac thrombosis in children. Between January 2013 and January 2020, patients diagnosed with ICT at the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Pediatric Cardiology departments in our hospital were included in the study. Demographic characteristics, clini

Beauty Is in the Eye of the Beholder: Esthetic Outcome Assessment in Smile Reanimation Surgery in Patients With Facial Palsy.

Layperson assessments are becoming increasingly important in the evaluation of surgical procedures of the face, including smile reanimation. In this study, the authors set out to answer 3 questions: (1) are esthetic scores more dependent on the assessor or the person that is being assessed, (2) how does smile reanimation change esthetic scores, (3) do sex and age of the patient and assessor explain some of the esthetic outcomes?Thirty-five assessors scored pre and postoperative photographs of 21 facial palsy patients undergoing smile reanimation. Linear mixed-effect models were used to investi

The assessment of anticoagulant activity to predict bleeding outcome in atrial fibrillation patients receiving dabigatran etexilate.

Special circumstances may require the measurement of the anticoagulant effect of dabigatran etexilate. No data currently link any given coagulation test to bleeding outcomes in patients receiving dabigatran etexilate for atrial fibrillation. Nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients receiving dabigatran etexilate of 110 mg (DE110) or 150 mg (DE150) were consecutively enrolled. The hemoclot thrombin inhibitor (HTI) assay, prothrombin time, and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) measurements were correlated with bleeding events during a prospective follow-up. There were 17 bleeding even

Assessing clinical outcomes of patients with acute calculous cholecystitis in addition to the Tokyo grading: a retrospective study.

The management of acute cholecystitis is still based on clinical expertise. This study aims to investigate whether the outcome of acute cholecystitis can be related to the severity criteria of the Tokyo guidelines and additional clinical comorbidities. A total of 103 patients with acute cholecystitis were retrospectively enrolled and their medical records were reviewed. They were all classified according to therapeutic modality, including early cholecystectomy and antibiotic treatment with or without percutaneous cholecystostomy. The impact of the Tokyo guidelines and the presence of comorbidi

Assessment of ISGLS definition of posthepatectomy liver failure and its effect on outcome in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) is a major complication after hepatectomy. As there was no standardized definition, the International Study Group of Liver Surgery (ISGLS) defined PHLF as increased international normalized ratio and hyperbilirubinemia on or after postoperative day 5 in 2010. We evaluated the impact of the ISGLS definition of PHLF on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 210 consecutive HCC patients who underwent curative hepatectomy at our facility from 2005 to 2010. The median follow-up period after hepatectomy was 35.2

Patient-Reported Assessment of Functional Gait Outcomes following Superior Gluteal Artery Perforator Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Harvesting the superior gluteal artery perforator (SGAP) flap involves dissection of vessels through the gluteal muscle, potentially compromising gait and ambulation. We compared patient-reported gait and ambulation problems between SGAP flap and deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap reconstructions. METHODS: Forty-three patients who underwent bilateral free flap breast reconstruction (17 SGAP, 26 DIEP) participated in the study. The Lower Extremity Functional Score (LEFS) was administered with a supplementary section evaluating gait, balance, fatigue, and pain. Patients
