Exercise training in left ventricular assist device patients: Protocol of an individual participant data meta-analysis.

AIMS: Although left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation improves prognosis of advanced heart failure patients still suffer from impaired exercise capacity and quality of life (QoL). Exercise training may improve both; however, the available evidence about exercise training effects in LVAD patients remains inconclusive due to small and monocentric randomized controlled trials. This study aims to aggregate the individual participant data (IPD) to perform meta-analysis on the safety and efficacy of exercise training on exercise capacity and QoL over standard care in LVAD patients. Individual participant data analysis comparing acute stroke patients with anterior versus posterior circulation dissections.

BACKGROUND: Cervical artery dissection (CAD) is a relevant etiology of transient ischemic attacks and strokes. Several trials explored the significance of specific antithrombotic treatments, i.e. oral anticoagulation (OAC) versus antiplatelet treatment (APT), on recurrent ischemic complications and clinical outcomes. As overall incidence rates of complications were low there is still controversy which antithrombotic treatment should be used. However, up to now there has been no systematic investigation among CAD-patients with ischemic stroke specifically comparing clinical course and outcome o

Dietary Patterns and Long-Term Outcomes in Patients with NAFLD: A Prospective Analysis of 128,695 UK Biobank Participants.

Large longitudinal studies exploring the role of dietary patterns in the assessment of long-term outcomes of NAFLD are still lacking. We conducted a prospective analysis of 128,695 UK Biobank participants. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the risk associated with two dietary patterns for long-term outcomes of NAFLD. During a median follow-up of 12.5 years, 1925 cases of end-stage liver disease (ESLD) and 12,466 deaths occurred in patients with NAFLD. Compared with patients in the lowest quintile, those in the highest quintile of the diet quality score was negatively associ

Health Literacy Is Associated with Activities of Daily Living of Patients Participating in Cardiac Rehabilitation: A Multicenter Clinical Study.

The activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with cardiac disease tend to decline. A previous study revealed that ADL relates to physical and cognitive functions associated with health literacy (HL). However, the relationship between HL and ADL is not well documented. This study aimed to clarify this relationship among patients participating in cardiac rehabilitation. This multicenter study, the Kobe-Cardiac Rehabilitation project for people around the World (K-CREW), included patients who participated in cardiac rehabilitation from October 2020 to December 2021. Amongst patients taking biologic therapies for axial spondyloarthritis, which factors are associated with work non-participation?

BACKGROUND: Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) frequently presents during working age and therefore impacts work participation. Biologic therapies have demonstrated a positive impact on work-related outcomes in clinical trials but real world data are limited. Therefore, we investigated the prevalence and predictors of work impairment and disability among axSpA patients attending a biologic therapy clinic. METHODS: This was a single-centre, cross-sectional study of patients with axSpA treated with biologic therapy. Work participation was assessed with the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment

Diagnosing deep vein thrombosis in cancer patients with suspected symptoms: An individual participant data meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A previous individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis showed that the Wells rule and D-dimer testing cannot exclude suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in cancer patients. OBJECTIVES: To explore reasons for this reduced diagnostic accuracy and to optimize the diagnostic pathway for cancer patients suspected of DVT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using IPD from 13 studies in patients with suspected DVT, DVT prevalence and the predictive value of the Wells rule items and D-dimer testing were compared between patients with and without cancer. Next, we developed a prediction model with

Neurochemical supplementation in patients with depressed levels of participation after brain tumor surgery: Rationale and preliminary results.

A unique challenge in some brain tumor patients is the fact that tumors arising in certain areas of the brain involve the neural structures of consciousness or alertness, limiting the patient's ability to participate in rehabilitation following surgery. A critical question is whether neurostimulant therapy can help patients participate in rehabilitation efforts. We performed a retrospective review of all patients undergoing brain tumor surgery by the senior author from 2012 to 2018. We limited this study to patients with tumors occupying critical structures related to consciousness, alertness,
