Peer Power! Secure Peer Attachment Mediates the Effect of Parental Attachment on Depressive Withdrawal of Teenagers.

Adolescents' depressive social withdrawal is a relevant concern for mental health professionals, and it is widespread among community teenagers in form of subclinical symptoms. Different studies suggest that insecure attachment representations increase the adolescents' likelihood to show symptoms of withdrawal (e.g., loneliness). This study explored the effect of the general attachment internal working model (IWM) and the independent and cumulative effects of the specific attachment representations of parents-in terms of secure base/safe haven-and peers on adolescents' withdrawal. Additionally

Risk and protective factors for opioid misuse in American Indian adolescents.

BACKGROUND: American Indian (AI) youth have disproportionately high rates of both heroin and other opioid misuse and recently have seen a large increase in negative outcomes due to opioid misuse. To address the dearth of research on within-group risk factors for heroin and other opioid misuse in AI adolescents, the goal of the present study is to explore the influence of peer, family, and school factors on opioid use among AI youth. METHODS: Participants (n = 3498, 49.5 % female, Mage = 14.8) were drawn from a large school-based sample of AI youth living on or near reservations, across six ge

Cooperative Learning Intervention Predicts Changes in Patterns of Friendship Networks Related To Peer Belonging and Cross-Group Ties.

Given the central role of friendships for adolescents social and academic needs and importance of identifying effective interventions to promote these outcomes, the present study examined interpersonal mechanisms through which a cooperative learning intervention changed adolescent friendship network dynamics related to self-perceived peer belonging and rejection. Specifically, we tested whether friendship network selection and influence on peer belonging and rejection varied in the intervention vs. control schools. It also examined whether the intervention promoted selection of intergroup frie

A systematic analysis of preprints in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery.

AIMS: Preprint servers allow authors to publish full-text manuscripts or interim findings prior to undergoing peer review. Several preprint servers have extended their services to biological sciences, clinical research, and medicine. The purpose of this study was to systematically identify and analyze all articles related to Trauma & Orthopaedic (T&O) surgery published in five medical preprint servers, and to investigate the factors that influence the subsequent rate of publication in a peer-reviewed journal. METHODS: All preprints covering T&O surgery were systematically searched in five med

"No Words Needed": Results of a Survey on How Parents of Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders Perceive (In)formal Peer Support.

BACKGROUND: Parents caring for children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) face unique and ongoing challenges that impact family well-being. Peer support from individuals with shared lived experiences can offer recognition, shared understanding and empowerment. Despite its promise, peer support for parents of children with NDD remains largely informal, under-researched and poorly integrated within standard healthcare, limiting its potential accessibility and impact. Little is known about what parents seek in peer support, how they experience it, and which factors facilitate meaningful eng

Impact of family functioning and peer pressure on nicotine dependence: a cross-sectional study among medical students in South Punjab, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Nicotine addiction among medical students is concerning, as these future healthcare providers are expected to model healthy lifestyle choices. While family and peer influences on smoking are well established globally, they remain underexplored in Punjab's cultural setting. This study aims to investigate the impact of family functioning and peer pressure on nicotine dependence among medical students in South Punjab. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive-analytic cross-sectional study was conducted from May to July 2025 among medical students enrolled in medical colleges in South Pun…

Enhancing quality assurance in radiotherapy for gynaecological cancers: implementation of an on-demand peer review process.

OBJECTIVES: Ensuring high-quality radiotherapy requires peer-reviewing target volumes. The Royal College of Radiologists recommends peer review specifically for individual target volumes in cases of gynaecological cancers. This study presents the outcomes of implementing an on-demand peer review system for gynaecological cancers within our institute. METHODS: The peer review process was planned for gynaecological cancer cases intended for curative radiotherapy. After junior clinical oncologists (COs) completed the segmentation, two senior COs specializing in gynaecological cancers conducted t

The evolution of zero-sum and positive-sum worldviews.

People and cultures differ in the extent to which they view the world as a zero-sum environment (where one person's gain is another's loss) … n the authority promotes a suboptimal worldview. This study demonstrates how real-world conditions, peer influence, and authority interventions can perpetuate or shift zero-sum and positive-sum worldviews-at times leading to inaccurate beliefs.

How Physician Self-Perceptions Affect the Impact of Peer Comparison Feedback on Opioid Prescribing.

Peer comparison feedback is a promising strategy for reducing opioid prescribing and opioid-related harms. Such comparisons may be particularly impactful among underestimating clinicians who do not perceive themselves as high prescribers relative to their peers. But peer comparisons could also unintentionally increase prescribing among overestimating clinicians who do not perceive themselves as lower prescribers than peers. The objective of this study was to assess if the impact of peer comparisons varied by clinicians' preexisting opioid prescribing self-perceptions. Subgroup analysis of a ra

Peer Ethnicity as a Mediator in the Relationship Between Ethnic Identity and Body Appreciation in Black College-Aged Women.

Strong ethnic identity is recognized as a protective factor against body image concern and eating pathology in Black women as they tend to hold cultural values in line with an acceptance of a variety of body shapes and sizes. Reinforcement of these cultural ideals may occur via same-race peer relationships. The current study examined the mediating role of same-race versus other-race peers in the relationship between ethnic identity and body appreciation in Black women. Participants were 139 Black undergraduate women (Mage = 18.94 years, MBMI = 25.33) who completed validated measures of ethnic

Adolescents' Attitudes and Perceptions Toward Peers with Hearing Aids: The Hearing Aid Effect in the Mid-2020s.

BACKGROUND: Negative perceptions related to appearance, personality, and intelligence may exist among peers toward adolescents who use hearing aids. This phenomenon, known as the "hearing aid effect," may discourage adolescents from using their devices. Understanding peers' attitudes and perceptions is crucial for promoting social acceptance and developing educational programs that foster positive perceptions of hearing aid users. PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine adolescents' attitudes and perceptions toward peers using hearing aids and to investigate the relationship between adolescents'

Beauty premium: Event-related potentials evidence of how physical attractiveness matters in online peer-to-peer lending.

Although it is well known that attractiveness-based impressions affect the labor market, election outcomes and many other social activities, little is known about the role physical attractiveness plays in financial transactions. With the development of online finance, peer-to-peer lending has become one of the most important ways in which businesses or individuals raise capital. However, because of information asymmetry, the lender must decide whether or not to lend money to a stranger based on limited information, resulting in their decision being influenced by many other factors. In the curr

Beyond situational ambiguity in peer conflict: unique and combined effects of cues from an antagonist and a best friend.

In accord with increasing recognition of the situation specificity of childhood social behaviors, individual and contextual differences in children's responses to potential peer conflict were examined (hostile attribution, behavioral strategies, and affective reactions; N = 367, 9-12 years, 197 girls). Situational cues from 2 sources, the antagonist and a witnessing best friend, were designed to suggest the antagonist's intentions. Multilevel modeling indicated that children's responses generally varied more according to cues from the antagonist than friend, but the latter also affected respon
