OBJECTIVE: We attempted to characterize the natural history of necrotizing fasciitis of the vulva.
STUDY DESIGN: The records of 29 nonpregnant women with necrotizing fasciitis of the vulva were evaluated.
RESULTS: These women experienced a rapidly progressing polymicrobial infection. Initially, the infections in many women were thought to be labial cellulitis, appearing mild and innocuous. Delays in recognition and aggressive surgical management were associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Of 15 women with a delay greater than 48 hours between presentation and treatment, 11 died.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the relationship between oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), potentially malignant oral disease (OPMD), and bacterial … oup, Actinomycetia and Streptococcus were significantly elevated in the early OSCC and OPMD groups. Peptostreptococcus and Fusobacterium were significantly higher in the advanced OSCC group than in the control, OPMD, and early OSCC groups.
CONCLUSIONS: The composition and diversity of oral microbiota may be associated with OPMD development and progression to OSCC. …

Fournier's gangrene (FG) is necrotizing fasciitis that affects the penis, scrotum, or perineum. Males are more likely to get affected by this disease. The most common predisposing risk factors are diabetes, alcoholism, hypertension, smoking, and immunosuppressive disorders. FG is a polymicrobial infection caused by both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. The most common aerobic organisms are Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus. The most common anaerobic organisms are Bacteroides, Clostridium, and Peptostreptococcus. The disease carries high mortality and morbi…

Samples from infected root canals of 43 teeth with chronic apical periodontitis were analyzed for the presence and relative levels of 83 oral bacterial species and/or phylotypes using a reverse-capture checkerboard hybridization assay. Associations between the most frequently detected taxa were also recorded. Anaerobic bacteria such as Bacteroides fragilis, Peptostreptococcus species, and Fusobacterium species, when accompanied by aerobic bacteria or in the presence of dead tissue, can cause severe infections. This article discusses the most common type of anaerobic infection, i.e., infection after colonic contamination of the abdominal cavity and soft tissues. Colonic anaerobes rarely cause infections as solitary pathogens. Mixed infections of aerobes and anaerobes are treated by source control, surgical drainage and debridement, and combination antibiotic therapy. Antimicrobial treatment should c…

Samples of pus aspirated from 53 peritonsillar abscesses were examined in detail for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, and the microbiological results correlated with clinical data in 44 cases. In 45 samples (85%) cultures were positive: 7 yielded organisms consistent with an aerobic infection, mainly Lancefield group A beta-haemolytic streptococci (5/7), and 38 yielded organisms consistent with an anaerobic infection. The anaerobic infections were usually mixed, but in two cases Fusobacterium necrophorum was isolated in pure culture. Peptostreptococcus micros and Streptococcus milleri were the …

Anaerobic bacteria are being recognized with increasing frequency as important micro-organisms in surgical infections. Clostridium, Bacteriodes, Fusobacterium, and Peptostreptococcus are the clinically prominent pathological anaerobes. All are commensals and, consequently, most anaerobic infections are endogenous in origin. In the colon, anaerobes are 1,000 times more prevalent than aerobes. This has important implications regarding the management of gastrointestinal tract operations and the treatment of infections originating from the bowel. Typical anaerobic infections include gas gangrene, …

Periodontal disease (PD) is one of the most widespread oral inflammatory diseases in dogs, with the potential to cause systemic consequences. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory potential of yeast-derived postbiotics and probiotic bacterial strains by using a previously developed in vitro biofilm model mimicking canine PD-associated biofilm including five bacterial species: Neisseria zoodegmatis, Corynebacterium canis, Porphyromonas cangingivalis, Peptostreptococcus canis, and Enterococcus faecalis. After we confirmed the presence of these five bacterial species by employi…
