A robust, visual masking test that was developed to be feasible with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine the visual cortical inhibitory function in migraine patients with visual aura at both psychophysical and cortical levels. It has been proposed that dyslexia is the result of a deficit in the magnocellular system. Reduced metacontrast masking in dyslexic readers has been taken as support for this view. To determine if monkeys exhibit clinical suppression in response to early abnormal binocular vision, we compared dichoptic to monocular luminance increment thresholds in monkeys reared with alternating monocular defocus or optically induced strabismus. Tinnitus rarely can be cured. The patient, however, needs help to avoid countless ineffective treatments and considerable cost. The clinical examination of patients with severe and chronic tinnitus must include associated psychological disturbances. After all medical and audiological treatments have failed, tinnitus patients often are advised to "learn to live with it." The aim of psychosocial treatment is assisting patients in the identification of aggravating factors in tinnitus and teaching them various coping skills.

In 307 subjects with tinnitus aurium, the parameters frequency, loudness, and masking levels did not correlate significantly with the basic diseases. As a new possibility in differentiation between tinnitus of central or peripheral origin, bilateral caloric long-term irrigation of the ear canal is presented. Using warm water leads to an increase, cold water to a decrease in the loudness of tinnitus. Such results were found in cases of Menière's disease and noise-induced hearing loss. An explanation of this phenomenon lies in the hypothesis of tinnitus genesis established by Tonndorf.
