The voices of midwives on the causes of perinatal mortality in Mpumalanga province of South Africa.

During childbirth, no woman should lose a child. However, perinatal mortality remains a global concern. The recent South African Saving Mothers and Babies report revealed a notable 20% increase in perinatal mortality in Mpumalanga province. This excess of perinatal mortality was due to hypertensive disorders and unexplained causes. Thus, this paper explores and describes the voices of midwives on the causes of perinatal mortality in the resource-limited setting of the Mpumalanga province. A qualitative, exploratory and descriptive design was carried out to explore the views and perceptions of …

A retrospective cohort study of the association between midwifery experience and perinatal mortality.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether experience of midwife-only and nurse-midwife lead maternity carers (LMCs) is related to perinatal mortality. METHODS: In a retrospective analysis, routinely collected data were obtained for all pregnancies resulting in live births (or stillbirth at ≥20weeks or weighing >400g) in New Zealand in 2005-2009. An anonymized dataset of date of midwife registration was used. The main outcome measure was perinatal mortality (fetal deaths and neonatal deaths ≤27days). RESULTS: Among 233215 eligible births, 84043 were linked to a midwife-only LMC and 150172 to a nurse-mi…

A study of perinatal mortality and associated maternal profile in a medical college hospital.

Study of perinatal mortality in a Medical College Hospital revealed stillbirth rate as 38.4, early neonatal death rate as 29.3 and overall perinatal morality rate as 67.7 per 1000 live births. More than half (53.6%) of the perinatal deaths were in primipara and another 22.8% in mothers of parity more than 3. Most mothers (85.9%) did not receive adequate antenatal care services. On admission 35.1% mothers presented with some risk factors. The major risk factors identified were toxaemia of pregnancy (14.8%), severe anaemia (13%) and antepartum haemorrhage (2.6%).

Use of classification of primary obstetric factors in perinatally related mortality surveillance.

The use of a classification of the primary obstetric factors leading to death for all fetal and neonatal losses that occurred between 20 weeks gestation and 28 days after birth is described. This is defined as the 'total perinatally related loss', and is compared with the information obtained if enquiry is limited to the traditional 'perinatal' period, from 28 weeks gestation to 7 days after birth. Both centre-based data for Queen Mary Hospital, Dunedin, and population-based data for the geographic area of the Otago Hospital Board for the four year period from September 1982 until August 1986

[Prematurity, hypotrophy and perinatal mortality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, 1980-1982].

In the Grand-Duchy of Luxemburg, a birth medical form is used on a voluntary basis in 7 maternity units. Statistical data concerning 7,015 births from 1980 to 1982 are reported. The study population represented 54% of the total births in the country. Perinatal mortality rate was 10.7%. In this series, 45% of deaths were due to obstetrical causes and 12% to congenital malformations. The prematurity rate was 5.1%. The ratio of babies less than 2,500 g was 5.7%. The interaction of prematurity and dysmaturity on mortality is analysed. The two risk factors seem to interact according to an additive …
