Traumatic injuries of the ankle are the most common injuries in sports. Up to 40% of patients who have undergone inversion ankle sprain report residual symptoms. The primary purpose of the study is to evaluate the incidence of SPN entrapment as consequence of acute severe inversion ankle sprain in children and adolescents; the secondary is to report the diagnostic pathway and the results after surgical treatment. From 2000 to 2015 were reviewed to summarize patients under the age of 15 years treated for a first episode of severe inversion ankle sprain. Cases with persistent symptoms (more than

Different mechanisms including knee dislocation, replacement surgery, nerve tumor, lumbar disc herniation, sharp injury, and gunshot wound lead to foot drop. Several surgical techniques have been used for treatment of foot drop, however, they have had sub-optimal outcomes. Soleus branch of tibial nerve is a good donor for nerve transfer for treatment of foot drop. In this is retrospective study, we reviewed medical records of 6 consecutive patients with sustained foot drop following injury to lumbar root or peroneal nerve, who underwent transfer of the soleus branch of tibial nerve to deep per

BACKGROUND: Foot drop is a gait abnormality with various etiologies. The Common Peroneal Nerve (CPN) is one of the most frequently injured peripheral nerves. CPN deficit leads to foot drop. Most CPN injuries recover spontaneously; nonetheless, some require nerve surgery. The present study set out to assess the surgical outcomes of foot drop following CPN injuries.
METHOD: Surgical outcomes were reviewed in 36 subjects with foot drop caused by CPN injuries, undergoing surgical nerve exploration. The CPN injuries were confirmed by physical examination, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and elect

PURPOSE: Peroneal nerve palsy in traumatic knee dislocations associated with multiple ligament injuries is common. Several surgical approaches are described for this lesion with less-than-optimal outcomes. The present case represents the application of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) technology for the treatment of peroneal nerve palsy with drop foot. This technology has already been proven its therapeutic potential for various musculoskeletal disorders. Based on these results, we hypothesized that PRGF could stimulate the healing process of traumatic peroneal nerve palsy with drop foot.

The presented case concerns a patient with neuralgia of the common peroneal nerve and progressive neurological deficit caused by interfascicular growth of schwannoma. The ultrasound diagnostics identified the lesion as a popliteal cyst. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed features of atypical cyst location. Due to the clinical course, it was decided to decompress the nerve trunk. An interfascicular tumor was identified intraoperatively. Particular nerve bundles were separated microsurgically and the tumor of schwannoma morphology was removed. The postoperative course brought resolution of neur

Functional ankle instability (FAI) has been associated with impaired sensorimotor function; however individual studies have produced conflicting results. In an attempt to reduce this ambiguity, a systematic review with meta-analysis was undertaken to determine which sensorimotor deficits exist with FAI. Fifty-three studies assessing sensorimotor factors in subjects with FAI were included from 465 identified articles. Studies were rated for methodological quality and data were pooled for peroneal reaction time, joint position sense, and postural sway during single-leg stance and time to stabili

Plexiform neurofibroma is generally considered as a component of neurofibromatosis 1, and a great majority of the cases with plexiform neurofibroma display other symptoms related to neurofibromatosis. Plexiform neurofibromas occur frequently in the head and neck region due to the rich innervation of the area, however appear rarely in the extremities. We report here an isolated giant plexiform neurofibroma involving the common peroneal nerve branches without symptoms related to neurofibromatosis in a 5-year-old case. Surgical excision was performed due to pain and numbness in the leg, and again

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic knee dislocation needs immediate surgical repair to restore joint function. A concomitant traction injury of the peroneal nerve is reported to exist in up to 25% of cases and is often overlooked initially. In patients with major nerve lesions, immediate surgical nerve repair might be necessary to avoid irreversible loss of neural function. In the present study, we tried to evaluate whether sonography is a valuable tool for identification of nerve pathology that warrants surgical intervention.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, both peroneal nerves in nine pa

Peroneal nerve palsy following knee dislocation is a serious problem, and neurolysis at the time of knee reconstruction does not always result in return of peroneal nerve function. We describe peroneal nerve pathoanatomy in three patients in whom late exploration of the peroneal nerve was performed because of ongoing absence of ankle dorsiflexion. We identified frank nerve rupture in two patients and a lengthy neuroma in continuity in one which extended far proximal to the fibular head and well above the previous surgical incision used for peroneal nerve neurolysis at the time of knee reconstr

BACKGROUND: Whether thalidomide induces a sensory ganglionopathy or a length-dependent axonal neuropathy is disputed. Moreover no agreement exists concerning the effects of thalidomide dosage on the clinical and electrophysiological findings.
OBJECTIVE: We examined the effect of age, gender disease duration, total cumulative dose on the clinical and electrophysiologic parameters.
METHODS: Fifteen patients who had previously received 100 mg/day of thalidomide for the treatment of multiple myeloma were evaluated retrospectively. Clinical findings and nerve conductions studies were evaluated us

BackgroundAn intraneural ganglion cyst is a non-neoplastic gelatinous cyst, which can be found within the epineurium of a peripheral nerve and lead to signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Early diagnosis and appropriate surgical treatment of this condition is a key to a successful outcome.Materials and methodsWe describe a case of a patient with peroneal nerve neuropathy caused by an intraneural ganglion cyst. Postsurgically, only partial relieve of the symptoms was achieved because of delayed diagnosis.ResultsThe aetiology of intraneural ganglia is controversial and historically diffe

In two patients a peripheral neuropathy was the presenting symptom of a noncutaneous peripheral T-cell lymphoma. In the first patient, the neuropathy had a relapsing and remitting course, the symptoms improved under corticosteroid therapy. The second patient suffered from a relentless neuropathy. In both cases the lymphoma infiltrated the peroneal nerve with an angiocentric and perivascular pattern resembling that observed in central nervous system lymphomas. The characterization of T-cell subsets in the lymph node showed cells with the helper/inducer and suppressor/cytotoxic phenotype in the

BACKGROUND: Partial fibular osteotomy (PFO) offers a minimally invasive strategy for treating medial compartment knee osteoarthritis (MKOA), yet its proximity to the peroneal nerve raises concern for postoperative neuropathy. This study investigated whether lowering the osteotomy site from the upper third to the mid-third of the fibula reduces nerve complications without compromising clinical efficacy.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 77 consecutive patients who underwent unilateral PFO from March to December 2018. After excluding 20 patients due to prior limb surgeries, or neurological c

Common peroneal neuropathy (CPN), also known as Slimmer's Palsy, is an isolated peripheral neuropathy typically associated with rapid weight loss resulting in loss of adipose tissue and subsequent nerve compression at the fibular head and is up to three times more common in individuals with malignancy. In this case report, we describe the diagnosis of CPN in a 54-year-old female with a 2.5-month history of atraumatic left foot drop and left ankle paresthesias, preceded by a 35-40 pound weight loss over the prior 3.5 month period in the setting of metastatic breast cancer.

Carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy at the elbow, and peroneal neuropathy are the most common mononeuropathies; however, other individual nerves may also be injured by various processes. These uncommon mononeuropathies may be less readily diagnosed owing to unfamiliarity with the presentations and vague symptoms. Electrodiagnostic studies are essential in the evaluation of uncommon mononeuropathies and can assist in localization and prognostication. However, they can also be challenging; stimulation at the proximal sites is difficult and well-validated reference values are not available.

A clinical, genetic, electrophysiological and ultrastructural study of a large kinship with peroneal muscular atrophy is reported. There was a noteworthy homogeneity in the phenotype as well as in the electrophysiological characteristics encountered in 15 affected members aged between 7 and 72 years. The symptoms appeared first in the second decade of life and stabilized by the fourth decade. There was no evidence of linkage of the neuropathy gene to the Duffy blood group locus on chromosome 1. The electrophysiological data in this family as well as the ultrastructural findings confirm that th

BACKGROUND: Neurological deficits occurring after diving or hyperbaric exposure are typically due to central nervous system decompression illness (DCI). However, consideration of alternate diagnoses is sometimes warranted.
CASE REPORT: A 47-yr-old female hyperbaric technician developed foot drop 2 d following her last hyperbaric exposure. She had worked in chamber once daily at 45 fsw for 90 min. The breathing gas was air until the last 15 min, during which she breathed oxygen. Her history was complicated by a gastric bypass and weight loss totaling 160 pounds within the preceding 9 mo. She w
