Phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in Alport syndrome with anterior lenticonus.

Eleven eyes of 6 patients with Alport syndrome had phacoemulsification with implantation of a single-piece acrylic hydrophobic intraocular lens (IOL) (AcrySof SA6OAT, Alcon) because of anterior lenticonus. All patients had excellent visual acuity after surgery. We recommend phacoemulsification with IOL implantation as a safe and effective procedure in patients with anterior lenticonus secondary to Alport syndrome.

[Case report of a severe corneoscleral burn caused by the phacoemulsification probe].

We report a case in which a severe corneoscleral burn occurred during the first seconds of a phacoemulsification procedure. The procedure, a superior temporal corneal limbus incision on the right eye, was carried out on a 79-year-old woman presenting a cataract with an average lens density, who had no other risk factors for complications. In spite of a mild nucleus density and routine phacoemulsification equipment (PULSAR - OPTIKON 2000) with resterilizable parts, a severe corneal injury occurred with tissue shrinkage around the surgical wound. It led to an immediate severe astigmatism which o…

A comparison of the effects of phacoemulsification and nucleus expression on endothelial cell density.

A series of patients undergoing extracapsular cataract extraction by phacoemulsification (1,126) or nucleus expression (632) were studied to evaluate the relative effects of emulsification time, irrigating volume, and surgical technique on endothelial cell density. The collective data revealed a higher cell loss with phacoemulsification (15%) than with nucleus expression (12%). Patients over 69.5 years appeared to be more vulnerable to the effects of phacoemulsification than those below 69.5 years. Although the data were subjected to combinations and permutations of age, sex, time, and volume,…

Evaluation of dry eye pre and post phacoemulsification in diabetic patients.

INTRODUCTION: Dry eye is a common condition influenced by various factors, including cataract surgery and systemic diseases like diabetes. Phacoemulsification, a widely used cataract procedure, often leads to increased postoperative dry eye symptoms due to inflammation and changes in tear film stability. Diabetic patients, already prone to dry eye, may experience further worsening after surgery. This study evaluates dry eye status in diabetic patients before and after phacoemulsification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 126 patients, divided into diabetic and non-diabetic groups fr…
