Opportunities and Challenges of Adolescent and Adult Vaccination Administration Within Pharmacies in the United States.

Pharmacies have been endorsed as alternative vaccine delivery sites to improve vaccination rates through increased access to services. Our objective was to identify challenges and facilitators to adolescent and adult vaccination provision in pharmacy settings in the United States. We recruited 40 licensed pharmacists in states with different pharmacy vaccination laws. Eligible pharmacists previously administered or were currently administering human papillomavirus (HPV); tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (TDAP); or meningitis (meningococcal conjugate vaccine [MCV4]) vaccines to adolescents ag…

[Prevalence and risk factors of drug induced liver disease: a survey based study in pharmacies].

AIM: The reported incidence of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) ranges from 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 100,000 patients for most drugs, but the true incidence is expected to be much higher. Several risk factors for DILI susceptibility have been suggested, however there is insufficient data to define an individual risk profile. Therefore it was our aim to study the prevalence of DILI and potential risk factors within adult pharmacy customers in Germany. METHODS: We conducted two 6 week-survey studies in 30 pharmacies in 2011 and 2012, respectively, using a newly developed questionnaire comprising que…

Racial differences in acquisition of syringes from pharmacies under conditions of legal but restricted sales.

BACKGROUND: Injecting drug users (IDUs) are at increased risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV and other bloodborne pathogens through the multi-person use of syringes. Although research has shown that increased access to syringes through syringe exchange programs (SEPs) is an effective strategy to reduce risky injection practices many areas of the United States still do not have SEPs. In the absence of SEPs, legislation allowing pharmacies over-the-counter sales of syringes has also been shown to reduce syringe sharing. The success of pharmacy sales however is limited by other legal stipulati…

The community pharmacy eras tour: …Are we ready for it? Why our next era requires leaning into community-based pharmacy post-graduate training programs.

Community-based practice is an area of pharmacy that has accelerated its innovation significantly in the last decade. Pandemics, policies, and the needs of our communities have challenged this innovation. Post-graduate community-based pharmacy training programs (CPTPs) allow for community-based pharmacies to continue the work they are doing while developing new initiatives with trainees who are driven by learning, implementation, and creativity to create deliverables and complete projects during their training program. CPTPs are needed to fuel and support our profession if we want to continue …

Pharmacy technicians, supporting our past, shaping our future: Implementing an ASHP-ACPE-accredited pharmacy technician training program in an academic medical center.

PURPOSE: Pharmacy technician training and education vary depending on practice site and state law. Although technician certification provides a national standard for credentialing, not all states require it, making certification a voluntary process for technicians or the organizations employing them. As the role of the pharmacist has evolved, the need for highly trained pharmacy technicians has grown. The pharmacy technician's expanded role in specialized areas of pharmacy practice has created new opportunities that require advanced training. SUMMARY: Research is lacking on return on investme

Unlocking the potential of community pharmacies to address hypertension in South Asia: the COPE-BP programme.

Hypertension is a leading contributor to cardiovascular disease in South Asia, affecting over 40% of adults, of whom most remain undiagnosed or poorly managed. Despite urgent healthcare needs, the already overstretched public primary care systems in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in rapidly growing urban areas, are falling short. Community pharmacies, often the first point of contact for low-income urban residents, represent an opportunity for delivering frontline chronic disease care. The Community-Pharmacies managing hypertension: intervention development and Evaluation in Ba…

Best practices to master robotic preparation of ready-to-administer systemic anticancer therapy in hospital pharmacies.

Automated reconstitution or preparation of systemic anticancer therapy has gained traction in the past decade. Transitioning from traditional manual workflows to fully automated production offers multiple benefits: decreased pharmacy staff workload, reduced risk of repetitive strain injuries, minimized medication errors, and lower risk of occupational exposure to hazardous medicinal products, especially when the robotic preparation areas are fully enclosed. Several elements can facilitate efficient implementation and improve productivity and safety in the use of robotic systems. The purpose of
