Complexes [Co(L)2](ClO4)2 (L = o-substituted 2-(pyridine-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthrolines 1a-c) containing three redox active centres (a Co2+ ion and two triaryl amine (Tara) units) have been synthesised. The order of oxidation steps in [Co(L)2](ClO4)2 (L = 1a-c) was determined using cyclic voltammetry and EPR/UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry. Herein, we report the synthesis of a new class of noncanonical α-amino acids bearing metal-chelating functionalities through Negishi cross-coupling between iodinated serine- or homoserine-derived substrates and pyridyl or polypyridyl partners. The method provides straightforward access to gram-scale quantities of amino acids bearing a range of nitrogen-based chelating ligands, including pyridine, bipyridine, phenanthroline, and terpyridine motifs, without detectable racemization throughout the reaction sequence.

The absorbance, fluorescence and cyclic voltammetric methods as well as agarose gel electrophoresis were used to study the interaction of the antitumor compound Et2SnCl2(phen) with DNA. The results indicate that Et2SnCl2 (phen) mainly reacts electrostatically with the phosphate backbone of DNA. There also exists an intercalation into the double-helix of DNA through the phenanthroline group of Et2SnCl2(phen). At high concentration Et2SnCl2(phen) can cause unwinding of DNA. The molecular action mechanism of Et2SnCl2(phen) with DNA was first proposed.

Cyanophages A-1 (L) and A-4C (L) grow within the cells of Anabaena variabilis under aerobic conditions in the dark in the presence of endogenous or exogenous (surcose) sources of energy. DNP inhibits the growth of cyanophages in the light and almost completely supresses it in the dark, o-phenanthroline entirely supresses the growth in both cases. DCMU has almost no effect on the yield of the virus in the light. Virus particles can apparently be synthesized at the account of the energy of both oxidative and cyclic photophosphorylation.

The N-arylation of the side chain of histidine by using triarylbismuthines is reported. The reaction is promoted by copper(II) acetate in dichloromethane at 40 °C under oxygen in the presence of diisopropylethylamine and 1,10-phenanthroline and allows the transfer of aryl groups with substituents at any position of the aromatic ring. The reaction shows excellent functional group tolerance and is applicable to dipeptides where the histidine is located at the N terminus. A histidine-guided backbone N-H arylation was observed in dipeptides where the histidine occupies the C terminus.

Methionine-enkephalin (Met-Enk) and ZnCl2 in combination enhances active T cell rosette formation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes to a greater degree than either of the agents used separately. Enhancement of rosette formation by Met-Enk plus ZnCl2 was not inhibited by the opiate receptor antagonist naloxone but was completely blocked by the zinc chelator 1,10-phenanthroline. The results suggest a relationship between zinc and Met-Enk and that zinc may be a modulator of enkephalin binding and function in the immune system as well as the nervous system.

Herein, for the first time, a metal-organic framework (MOF) is reported as a catalyst for α-alkylation of ketones with alcohols. Using an encapsulation strategy via nano-confinement of a homogeneous Mn-phenanthroline complex into MOF pores, functionalized branched ketones were selectively produced. Mechanistic investigations and deuterium labelling experiments validated the utilization of the borrowing hydrogen strategy. The formation of extra Lewis acid sites, defects, and pore enhancement during catalysis helped in achieving higher activity and selectivity.
