OBJECT: Molecular genetic studies of cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) have identified three loci, CCM1-3, that can lead to CCM when mutated. Examination of the CCM1 locus established KRIT1 (Krev1 Interaction Trapped genre 1) as the CCM1 gene. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether aortic medial changes are more severe in patients who require aortic valve replacement of congenitally bicuspid aortic valves (BAV) than in patients who require replacement of tricuspid aortic valves and acquired valvular disease (AVD).

The course of radiculopathy is sometimes associated with weakness and wasting of muscles. Very rarely in such cases, however, is hypertrophy of muscle fibres observed. Three cases are presented of sciatica with enlarged calves caused by hypertrophy of type 1 or types 1 and 2 muscle fibres. In light of the literature and the results obtained, an attempt is made to explain the cause of rare clinical symptoms and draw attention to diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties.

We evaluate in rats the role of NO in the solitary tract nucleus (STn) after an anoxic stimulus to carotid body chemoreceptor cells (CChrc) with cyanide (NaCN), on the hyperglycemic reflex with glucose retention by the brain (BGR) and FOS expression (FOS-ir) in the STn. The results suggest that nitroxidergic pathways in the STn may play an important role in glucose homeostasis. Vesiculobullous disorders in a child can be a diagnostic challenge. Common causes of blisters in early childhood include genodermatoses like epidermolysis bullosa and infections like herpes simplex. Lipoid proteinosis may rarely present with vesiculobullous lesions in childhood. We report a child, who presented in early childhood with blistering dermatosis. On long term follow-up, typical features of lipoid proteinosis developed. A high index of suspicion is required when one deals with blistering dermatosis in a child.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Bone marrow (BM) cells may transdifferentiate into or fuse with organ parenchymal cells. BM therapy shows promise in murine models of cirrhosis, and clinical trials of bone marrow stem cell therapy for organ healing are underway. However, the BM may contribute to scar-forming myofibroblasts in various organs including the liver.
