How long do louse eggs take to hatch? A possible answer to an age-old riddle.

There are no rigorous data on how long eggs of the head louse, Pediculus capitis (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae), take to hatch. Pediculicide users often report reinfestations after apparently successful treatments in the absence of infective contacts. This study aimed to resolve the question of whether some louse eggs hatch after the completion of treatment, thereby giving rise to a new infestation. Data were extracted from the records of lice collected after treatments in 20 clinical intervention trials. All datasets were eliminated except those in which only newly hatched louse nymphs were foun…

First Record of the Chewing Louse Trichodectes canis (Psocodea: Trichodectidae) on the Domestic Cat (Felis catus) in Central America.

Trichodectes canis is a chewing louse considered highly specific to domestic and wild canids. Here, we report the first record of T. canis infesting a domestic cat (Felis catus) in Central America. In April 2025, an adult male cat from a rural community near Juigalpa, Chontales Department of Nicaragua, was brought to a veterinary clinic in critical condition, showing marked lethargy and anorexia. During clinical inspection, multiple chewing lice were observed on the animal's coat. Six specimens (five nymphs and one female) were manually collected and taxonomically identified as T. canis based

Surveillance of the Sensitivity towards Antiparasitic Bath-Treatments in the Salmon Louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis).

The evolution of drug resistant parasitic sea lice is of major concern to the salmon farming industry worldwide and challenges sustainable growth of this enterprise. To assess current status and development of L. salmonis sensitivity towards different pesticides used for parasite control in Norwegian salmon farming, a national surveillance programme was implemented in 2013. The programme aims to summarize data on the use of different pesticides applied to control L. salmonis and to test L. salmonis sensitivity to different pesticides in farms along the Norwegian coast. Here we analyse two year

Evidence for interspecific interactions in the ectoparasite infracommunity of a wild mammal.

BACKGROUND: Co-infection with multiple parasite species is commonly observed in nature and interspecific interactions are likely to occur in parasite infracommunities. Such interactions may affect the distribution of parasites among hosts but also the response of infracommunities to perturbations. However, the response of infracommunities to perturbations has not been well studied experimentally for ectoparasite communities of small mammal hosts. METHODS: In the current study we used experimental perturbations of the ectoparasite infracommunity of sengis from Africa. We suppressed tick recrui

Alternative Splice in Alternative Lice.

Genomic and transcriptomics analyses have revealed human head and body lice to be almost genetically identical; although con-specific, they nevertheless occupy distinct ecological niches and have differing feeding patterns. Most importantly, while head lice are not known to be vector competent, body lice can transmit three serious bacterial diseases; epidemictyphus, trench fever, and relapsing fever. In order to gain insights into the molecular bases for these differences, we analyzed alternative splicing (AS) using next-generation sequencing data for one strain of head lice and one strain of

Mallophaga species on long-legged buzzards (Buteo rufinus) in Turkey.

This study was carried out on three long-legged buzzards to be brought for treatment to Veterinary Faculty, University of Kirikkale. Twenty lice were collected from the buzzards. The lice preserved in a tube containing of 70 % alcohol. They were mounted on slides separetely by using Faure Forte medium after cleared in lactophenol. Three species of lice: Laemobothrion (Laemobothrion) maximum, Craspedorrhynchus platystomus, Colpocephalum nanum were determined in microscopical examination. Colpocephalum nanum was reported for the first time from long-legged buzzards in Turkey.

[Cuclotogaster heterographus (Mallophaga: Lipeuridae) infestation on ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in Konya].

The aim of this study was to detect ectoparasites on ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in Konya. On the Research and Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Selcuk University, 55 ring-necked pheasants were observed to be infested with ectoparasites. Because of this, the pheasants were put into a large cartoon-box, the bottom of which was covered with a white paper and were treated with propoxur for a few minutes. The ectoparasites that had fallen on the paper were transferred to a tube containing 70% ethyl alcohol. After being cleared in lactophenol for a few days,

Efficacy of a topical spot-on containing 65% permethrin against the dog louse, Trichodectes canis (Mallophaga:Trichodectidae).

The efficacy of a 65% permethrin spot-on formulation (Defend EXspot, Schering-Plough Animal Health Corp., Union, NJ) against the dog louse, Trichodectes canis de Greer 1778, was studied. Fourteen dogs naturally infested with T. canis were evenly and randomly allocated to treatment with 65% permethrin administered at the label dose rate of 1 or 2 ml per dog or to an untreated control group. Louse counts were performed for each dog by gently back-combing the hair at six designated anatomic sites (head, tail, belly, each side, and an 8-cm strip the length of the body on the back), and lice were c

The development of cockle, a sheep pelt defect, in relation to size of infestation and time of exposure to Bovicola ovis, the sheep-biting louse.

Groups of ten louse-naive lambs were infested with one, ten or 100 female Bovicola ovis and killed 84 days later when an examination of their pelts was made to detect cockle. In a second experiment groups of ten lambs were infested with ten or 100 female B. ovis and groups of lambs were killed every fortnight up to 84 days post-infestation. The pelts were examined in order to detect the earliest time at which cockle could be detected following a louse infestation. Cockle is a nodular condition of the skin arising in response to infestation with B. ovis and is possibly a hypersensitivity on the
