[Hand ergotherapy for rheumatic diseases and the special importance of hand surgery].

BACKGROUND: Human hands play an important role in overcoming routine daily life. As a consequence of limitations in the function of the hand due to rheumatic diseases, various manual activities can become an enormous challenge or even become absolutely impossible. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This review article discusses the possibilities of hand ergotherapy and explains the most important assist devices. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The main area of occupational and hand therapy interventions in patients with rheumatoid arthritis is the postoperative or conservative treatment of wrist and finger joint

Combined Endurance and Resistance Exercise Mitigates Age-Associated Cardiac Dysfunction.

Aging is associated with a decline in cardiac function. Exercise has been shown to effectively reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases. Here whether a combination of endurance and resistance exercises can improve cardiac function in aged mice during late life is investigated. Through transcriptome analysis, several signaling pathways activated in the hearts of 22-month-old mice after combined exercise, including cardiac muscle contraction, mitophagy, and longevity regulation are identified. Combined exercise training mitigated age-associated pathological cardiac hypertrophy, reduced oxidat

Does physical activity associated with chronic food restriction alleviate anxiety like behaviour, in female mice?

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterized by excessive weight loss, persistent food restriction and inappropriate physical activity relative to declining energy balance. The comorbidity with depression and/or anxiety disorders might contribute to the "chronicization" of the disease. We aimed here to question first the link between physical activity and anxiety from a clinical investigation of AN patients (n = 206). Then, using a rodent model mimicking numerous physiological and metabolic alterations commonly seen in AN patients, we examined whether 1) chronic food restriction i

Verification and optimization of impact-response consistency in human thoracic targets for blunt ballistic impact testing.

INTRODUCTION: The validation of human thorax targets for blunt ballistic impact injury assessment is a critical component in investigating their impact responses. Existing studies generally validate physical and finite-element (FE) thoracic targets independently against standardized response corridors. However, whether these two targets produce quantitatively consistent responses under identical blunt ballistic impact conditions remains insufficiently investigated. METHODS: To resolve the discrepancy in impact responses between physical and digital thorax targets and establish a verification

Female rats are more responsive than are males to the protective effects of voluntary physical activity against the behavioral consequences of inescapable stress.

Common stress-related mental health disorders affect women more than men. Physical activity can provide protection against the development of future stress-related mental health disorders (i.e. stress resistance) in both sexes, but whether there are sex differences in exercise-induced stress resistance is unknown. We have previously observed that voluntary wheel running (VWR) protects both female and male rats against the anxiety- and exaggerated fear-like behavioral effects of inescapable stress, but the time-course and magnitude of VWR-induced stress resilience has not been compared between

Exercising with blocked muscle glycogenolysis: Adaptation in the McArdle mouse.

BACKGROUND: McArdle disease (glycogen storage disease type V) is an inborn error of skeletal muscle metabolism, which affects glycogen phosphorylase (myophosphorylase) activity leading to an inability to break down glycogen. Patients with McArdle disease are exercise intolerant, as muscle glycogen-derived glucose is unavailable during exercise. Metabolic adaptation to blocked muscle glycogenolysis occurs at rest in the McArdle mouse model, but only in highly glycolytic muscle. However, it is unknown what compensatory metabolic adaptations occur during exercise in McArdle disease. METHODS: In

Noseband Use in Equestrian Sports - An International Study.

Nosebands are used by riders to prevent the horse from opening its mouth, to increase control and, in some cases, to comply with the competition rules. While equestrian texts traditionally recommend that two adult human fingers should be able to fit under a fastened noseband, noseband tightness levels are not, in general, regulated in competition. Possible detrimental consequences for the horse, of excessively tight nosebands, include discomfort, pain or tissue damage. The current study investigated noseband usage in equestrian competition. Data regarding noseband type, position, width and tig

Systemic adaptation to oxidative challenge induced by regular exercise.

Exercise is associated with increased ATP need and an enhanced aerobic and/or anaerobic metabolism, which results in an increased formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Regular exercise seems to decrease the incidence of a wide range of ROS-associated diseases, including heart disease, type II diabetes, rheumatic arthritis, Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases, and certain cancers. The preventive effect of regular exercise, at least in part, is due to oxidative stress-induced adaptation. The oxidative challenge-related adaptive process of exercise is probably not just dependent upon the gener

Human-machine-human interaction in motor control and rehabilitation: a review.

BACKGROUND: Human-human (HH) interaction mediated by machines (e.g., robots or passive sensorized devices), which we call human-machine-human (HMH) interaction, has been studied with increasing interest in the last decade. The use of machines allows the implementation of different forms of audiovisual and/or physical interaction in dyadic tasks. HMH interaction between two partners can improve the dyad's ability to accomplish a joint motor task (task performance) beyond either partner's ability to perform the task solo. It can also be used to more efficiently train an individual to improve the

An anthropomorphic soft skeleton hand exploiting conditional models for piano playing.

The development of robotic manipulators and hands that show dexterity, adaptability, and subtle behavior comparable to human hands is an unsolved research challenge. In this article, we considered the passive dynamics of mechanically complex systems, such as a skeleton hand, as an approach to improving adaptability, dexterity, and richness of behavioral diversity of such robotic manipulators. With the use of state-of-the-art multimaterial three-dimensional printing technologies, it is possible to design and construct complex passive structures, namely, a complex anthropomorphic skeleton hand t

Supplementation of Maltotetraose Enhances Endurance Capacity and Energy Metabolism of ICR Mice.

Carbohydrate supplementation during endurance exercise is an effective strategy to enhance performance and reduce exercise-induced damage. This study investigated the effects of maltotetraose (G4), a linear α-1,4-linked tetrasaccharide, on endurance capacity, tissue injury, energy metabolism, and gut health in ICR mice subjected to endurance training. G4 supplementation significantly improved the exercise performance, maintained the endogenous antioxidant capacity, and alleviated tissue injury induced by metabolic stress. Mechanistically, G4 stabilized blood glucose levels, increased hepatic a

Mechanism of Autonomic Exercise Improving Cognitive Function of Alzheimer's Disease by Regulating lncRNA SNHG14.

This paper studied the influence of exercise on the cognitive ability of AD patients and elucidated potential mechanisms. The expression of SNHG14 was validated by qRT-PCR. The cognitive impairment of mice was examined by MWM Test. ELISA tests were applied to discover the influence of SNHG14 on inflammation. Overexpression of SNHG14 was found in AD patients and underexpression of SNHG14 was identified in these AD patients after exercise. In APP/PS1 double transgenic mice, SNHG14 reversed the protective impacts of exercise on escape latency and distance moved. The upregulation of SNHG14 also in

Exercise prevents obesity-induced cognitive decline and white matter damage in mice.

Obesity in the western world has reached epidemic proportions, and yet the long-term effects on brain health are not well understood. To address this, we performed transcriptional profiling of brain regions from a mouse model of western diet (WD)-induced obesity. Both the cortex and hippocampus from C57BL/6J (B6) mice fed either a WD or a control diet from 2 months of age to 12 months of age (equivalent to midlife in a human population) were profiled. Gene set enrichment analyses predicted that genes involved in myelin generation, inflammation, and cerebrovascular health were differentially ex

Is Exercise the Right Medicine for Dystrophic Muscle?

INTRODUCTION: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a neuromuscular disease caused by a dystrophin protein deficiency. Dystrophin functions to stabilize and protect the muscle fiber during muscle contraction; thus, the absence of functional dystrophin protein leads to muscle injury. DMD patients experience progressive muscle necrosis, loss of function, and ultimately succumb to respiratory failure or cardiomyopathy. Exercise is known to improve muscle health and strength in healthy individuals as well as positively affect other systems. Because of this, exercise has been investigated as a poten

Current protocols in the management of oral submucous fibrosis: An update.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a debilitating condition of oral cavity which has significant potential for malignant transformation. In spite of over 20 years of research, the pathogenesis of the condition is still obscure and no single management modality is effective. Many OSMF treatment protocols have been proposed to alleviate the signs and symptoms of the disorder and there is overwhelming evidence that as areca nut is primary cause, stopping its use may have a considerable effect on symptoms rather than reversing pre-existing fibrosis. We present a review of the current protocols for

Effects of draw reins on limb kinematics.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: No data exist on the GRF-kinematics relation due to changes caused by equestrian interventions. HYPOTHESIS: Through the judicious use of draw reins the rider can influence the kinematics of the horse to meet stated goals of dressage training. Relating the results to previously published kinetic data of the same experiment implies a possible relationship between kinetics and kinematics. METHODS: The kinematics of 8 sound Swedish Warmblood horses were measured whilst the horses were being ridden with and without draw reins. Three conditions were evaluated: 1) draw

The Silent Spill: A Case Report on Navigating the Challenges of a Chyle Leak.

A chyle leak occurs due to a discontinuity in the thoracic duct. It is a very rare condition that occurs as a result of injuries or surgical procedures. Chyle is rich in antibodies. Its functions are to maintain the equilibrium of the human fluid system, draw in fatty acids, and maintain the natural immunity of humans. It is identified by the increased quantity of drains, which show a milky white color and clinically palpable supraclavicular collection. It is a condition that has to be managed as soon as possible as it leads to serious nutritional debridement, electrolyte imbalance, and compli

[Effect of nasal respiration on the electrical activity of skeletal musculature].

Spontaneous electrical activity of human gastrocnemius and deltoid muscles was studied after physical overloading under the conditions of nasal or oral respiration. In nasal respiration, the electrical activity was enhansed as compared with oral respiration: stimulation of the nasal cavity receptors with air current seems to improve the respiratory center work and to produce optimal conditions for a wider irradiation of excitatory impulses from the respiratory center to the nerve-skeletal apparatus regulating the motor activity of the body.

Behavioral and anatomical abnormalities in Mecp2 mutant mice: a model for Rett syndrome.

Over 90% of Rett syndrome (RTT) cases have a mutation in the X-linked gene encoding methyl CpG binding-protein 2 (MeCP2). A mouse model that reprises clinical manifestations of the disease would be valuable for examining disease mechanisms. Here, we characterize physical and behavioral measures, as well as brain region volumes in young adult mice that have mutations in mouse methyl CpG binding-protein 2 gene (Mecp2) to serve as a baseline for other studies. Hemizygous males, which produce no functional protein, exhibit hypoactivity and abnormalities in locomotion, stereotypies, and anxiety rem
