Gaze Tracking of Pitched Balls in Coupled and Uncoupled Tasks.

Studies suggest that anticipation in sports-related tasks is better if the task maintains the coupling of perception and action required in competition. Study 1 addressed the question of whether gaze tracking varies between coupled tasks in baseball and softball batters. Fifteen subjects executed either a coupled task (partially swinging a bat at an approaching ball) or an uncoupled task (predicting the passing height of an approaching ball). The ball was stopped by a net 8 feet (2.44 m) in front of the subject. Rapid gaze shifts occurred for 53.0% of the pitches in the uncoupled task, and for

Multimodal training using pitch gestures improves Mandarin tone recognition in noise for children with cochlear implants.

The present study investigates whether incorporating manual pitch gestures into audiovisual training can enhance the recognition of Mandarin lexical tones in prelingually deaf children with cochlear implants (CIs). Building on prior research that demonstrated the benefits of hand gestures in second-language tone learning, the study hypothesized that multimodal training integrating pitch gestures would be more effective than auditory-visual training alone. Eighteen preschool-aged CI users (15 with bimodal hearing) were assigned in equal numbers to either: (1) an experimental group receiving com

Perceptual and Quantitative Assessment of Dysphonia Across Vowel Categories.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to determine the sensitivity of perceptual and computational correlates of breathy and rough voice quality (VQ) across multiple vowel categories using single-variable matching tasks (SVMTs). METHODS: Sustained phonations of /a/, /i/, and /u/ from 20 dysphonic talkers (10 with primarily breathy voices and 10 with primarily rough voices) were selected from the University of Florida Dysphonic Voice Database. For primarily breathy voices, perceived breathiness was judged, and for primarily rough voices, perceived roughness was judged by the same group of 10 listeners u

Effects of tonal language background on tests of temporal sequencing in children.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of the present study were to determine the effects of language background on the performance of the pitch pattern sequence test (PPST) and duration pattern sequence test (DPST). As temporal order sequencing may be affected by age and working memory, these factors were also studied. DESIGN: Performance of tonal and non-tonal language speakers on PPST and DPST were compared. STUDY SAMPLE: Twenty-eight native Mandarin (tonal language) speakers and twenty-nine native Malay (non-tonal language) speakers between seven to nine years old participated in this study. RESULTS: The

Salicylate induced tinnitus: behavioral measures and neural activity in auditory cortex of awake rats.

Neurophysiological studies of salicylate-induced tinnitus have generally been carried out under anesthesia, a condition that abolishes the perception of tinnitus and depresses neural activity. To overcome these limitations, measurement of salicylate induced tinnitus were obtained from rats using schedule induced polydipsia avoidance conditioning (SIPAC) and gap pre-pulse inhibition of acoustic startle (GPIAS). Both behavioral measures indicated that tinnitus was present after treatment with 150 and 250 mg/kg of salicylate; measurements with GPIAS indicated that the pitch of the tinnitus was ne

Vertical Phase Difference and Glottal Efficiency in Musical Theater and Opera Singers.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to (1) determine the relationship between vertical phase difference (VPD) and glottal efficiency (GE) in singers and (2) to compare VPD and GE between musical theater and opera singing styles. METHODS: Five opera and three musical theater singers (Mean age = 25.3, 100% male) performed a series of vocal tasks at two pitches (low pitch C#3, 133 ± 5 Hz; high pitch C#4, 277 ± 5 Hz) for three levels of loudness (soft, baseline, and loud), while undergoing flexible distal chip videostroboscopy. Aerodynamic and acoustic information for each vocal task was

Spectral features related to the auditory perception of twang-like voices.

BACKGROUND: To the best of our knowledge, studies on the relationship between spectral energy distribution and the degree of perceived twang-like voices are still sparse. Through an auditory-perceptual test we aimed to explore the spectral features that may relate with the auditory-perception of twang-like voices. METHODS: Ten judges who were blind to the test's tasks and stimuli rated the amount of twang perceived on seventy-six audio samples. The stimuli consisted of twenty voices recorded from eight CCM singers who sustained the vowel [a:] in different pitches, with and without a twang-lik

Differences in loudness of positive and negative Schroeder-phase tone complexes as a function of the fundamental frequency.

Tone complexes with positive (m+) and negative (m-) Schroeder phase show large differences in masking efficiency. This study investigated whether the different phase characteristics also affect loudness. Loudness matches between m+ and m- complexes were measured as a function of (1) the fundamental frequency (f0) for different frequency bands in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired subjects, and (2) intensity level in normal-hearing subjects. In normal-hearing subjects, the level of the m+ stimulus was up to 10 dB higher than that of the corresponding m- stimulus at the point of equal loudness.

Crowd Evaluations of Entrepreneurs with Physical Disabilities: Stereotype Subtyping through the Lens of Benevolent Ableism.

We investigate how crowds evaluate pitches by entrepreneurs with versus without physical disabilities. Leveraging stereotype subtyping, we argue that entrepreneurs with physical disabilities are evaluated as a distinct subtype, rather than as people with disabilities or as conventional entrepreneurs. We hypothesize that benevolent ableism shapes how this subtype is evaluated, inflating both warmth and competence perceptions. Three experiments support our hypotheses, and key informant conversations with professional investors and entrepreneurs with disabilities corroborate the proposed mechanis

AUDITORY NERVE: ELECTRICAL STIMULATION IN MAN.

Auditory perceptions produced in a person deaf to acoustic stimulation were studied by electrically exciting the auditory nerve through permanently implanted electrodes. Pulsed current as small as 1 microampere peak-to-peak could be perceived. Pitch, as reported by the subject, varied with electrode selection, current amplitude, and pulse repetition rate from about 70 to at least 300 pulses per second. Loudness increased with amplitude and duration of pulse stimuli, and to a lesser extent with repetition rate. The total range in amplitude of the stimulus, from threshold to an uncomfortable lou

Analysis of Audiometric Differences of Patients with and without Tinnitus in a Large Clinical Database.

Human hearing loss (HL) and comorbidities like tinnitus pose serious problems for people's daily life, which in most severe cases may lead to social isolation, depression, and suicide. Here, we investigate the relationship between hearing deficits and tinnitus. To this end, we conducted a retrospective study on anonymized pure tone and speech audiometric data from patients of the ENT hospital Erlangen in which we compare audiometric data between patients with and without tinnitus. Overall data from 37,661 patients with sensorineural (SHL) or conductive HL (CHL) with (T, 9.5%) or without (NT, 9

Superior orientation discrimination and increased peak gamma frequency in autism spectrum conditions.

While perception is recognized as being atypical in individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC), the underlying mechanisms for such atypicality are unclear. Here we test the hypothesis that individuals with ASC will show enhanced orientation discrimination compared with neurotypical observers. This prediction is based both on anecdotal report of superior discriminatory skills in ASC and also on evidence in the auditory domain that some individuals with ASC have superior pitch discrimination. In order to establish whether atypical perception might be mediated by an imbalance in the ratio

Dissociation between two modes of spatial processing by a visual form agnosic.

We report a dissociation between two aspects of visuospatial processing in a patient with a profound impairment in the visual perception of objects ('visual form agnosia'). The orientation-in-depth of a visual field ('visual pitch') was found to systematically influence the elevation at which she perceived her own eye level, just as it does in normal individuals; but at the same time, she was unable to discriminate perceptually the orientation-in-depth of the same visual field, a trivial task for individuals with normal vision. These results suggest that, in the normal brain, the processes tha

Neural correlates of emotional prosody in Parkinson's disease: A systematic review.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder involving motor, cognitive and affective symptoms. Processing of emotional prosody, namely the modulation of pitch, volume, and frequency in speech conveying emotional nuances, seems to be affected in PD, but its neural mechanisms have not been fully comprehended. To address this issue, the present systematic review searched for the studies which investigated the neural correlates of emotional prosody in PD patients by means of electrophysiological, neuroimaging, and brain stimulation techniques. Studies on deep brain stimulation

Role of medio-dorsal frontal and posterior parietal neurons during auditory detection performance in rats.

To further characterize the role of frontal and parietal cortices in rat cognition, we recorded action potentials simultaneously from multiple sites in the medio-dorsal frontal cortex and posterior parietal cortex of rats while they performed a two-choice auditory detection task. We quantified neural correlates of task performance, including response movements, perception of a target tone, and the differentiation between stimuli with distinct features (different pitches or durations). A minority of units--15% in frontal cortex, 23% in parietal cortex--significantly distinguished hit trials (su

The relationship between cepstral peak prominence and selected parameters of dysphonia.

Traditional measures of dysphonia vary in their reliability and in their correlations with perceptions of grade. Measurements of cepstral peak prominence (CPP) have been shown to correlate well with perceptions of breathiness. Because it is a measure of periodicity, CPP should also predict roughness. The ability of CPP and other acoustic measures to predict overall dysphonia and the subcategories of breathiness and roughness in pathological voice samples is explored. Preoperative and postoperative speech samples from 19 patients with unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis who underwent

Responses of neurons in the feline inferior colliculus to modulated electrical stimuli applied on and within the ventral cochlear nucleus; Implications for an advanced auditory brainstem implant.

Auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) can restore useful hearing to persons with deafness who cannot benefit from cochlear implants. However, the quality of hearing restored by ABIs rarely is comparable to that provided by cochlear implants in persons for whom those are appropriate. In an animal model, we evaluated elements of a prototype of an ABI in which the functions of macroelectrodes on the surface of the dorsal cochlear nucleus would be integrated with the function of multiple penetrating microelectrodes implanted into the ventral cochlear nucleus. The surface electrodes would convey most

Auditory discrimination as a condition for E-learning based Speech Therapy: a proposal for an auditory discrimination test (ADT) for adult dysarthric speakers.

BACKGROUND: Web based speech training for dysarthric speakers, such as E-learning based Speech Therapy (EST), puts considerable demands on auditory discrimination abilities. AIMS: To discuss the development and the evaluation of an auditory discrimination test (ADT) for the assessment of auditory speech discrimination skills in Dutch adult dysarthric speakers as a prelude to EST. METHOD: Five ADT subtests were developed, each addressing a vital speech dimension in speech therapy: articulation (segmental elements), intensity, overall pitch, speech rate and intonation. A healthy control group

Predictors of Reading Skills in Children With Listening Concerns.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research shows that children with reading disorders perform poorly on auditory processing (AP) tasks. Correlational studies have also shown significant associations between some AP tasks and word and nonword reading. There is less clear evidence for AP contributions to spelling and passage reading. The aim of this research was to extend current knowledge by investigating the association between a range of AP measures used clinically and children's reading of words, nonwords, and passages, as well as word spelling. DESIGN: Regression analyses were conducted on data from 90
