Peripheral neuropathy degrades gait mechanics, elevating peak plantar pressures (PPP) and tissue ulceration risks. This exploratory pilot study evaluates custom orthotics using thermo-mechanically synthesized re-entrant auxetic foam insoles with targeted dome-shaped inserts. Bilateral dynamic gait analysis was conducted across a heterogeneous cohort (N = 9) utilizing a P-Walk 600 pressure plate and a MARVUE 2D motion capture system inside standardized footwear. To address small-sample limits, a non-parametric bootstrap resampling analysis (B = 1000) was executed. Native auxetic foam demonstrat

To analyze the musculoskeletal changes of individuals with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and their repercussions on postural control, a literature review was carried out in the BIREME and EBSCO HOTS databases and Pubmed site with the following keywords: "ankylosing spondylitis", "postural balance", and "posture". Articles involving human beings, assessing the postural control and balance of individuals with AS, written in English or Portuguese and published between 1999 and 2010, were selected. Of the total number of articles found, only four met the requirements. Of those, three compared the ou

The management of tibial pilon fractures is challenging and often leads to complications and limitations in ankle function. The study aims to investigate myotonometric parameters and muscle strength of ankle muscles, as well as gait pattern and balance among patients following surgical treatment of pilon fractures. The randomized controlled study will analyze the differences between the patients who will follow a 3-month physical exercise program and will wear customized foot orthoses (i.e., customized orthotic arch support insoles) versus patients who will attend only the physical exercise pr

Although the effects of attention on movement execution are well documented behaviorally, much less research has been done on the neurophysiological changes that underlie attentional focus effects. This study presents two experiments exploring effects of attention during an isometric plantar-flexion task using surface electromyography (sEMG). Participants' attention was directed either externally (towards the force plate they were pushing against) or internally (towards their own leg, specifically the agonist muscle). Experiment 1 tested the effects of attention on accuracy and efficiency of f

PURPOSE: Severely hypoplastic phalanges and metacarpals in symbrachydactyly are often associated with a delay or failure of primary ossification evident by radiography at birth. However, little is known about the ossification pattern and further growth of severely hypoplastic bones in symbrachydactyly. To clarify this mechanism, we observed development during ossification of the hypoplastic phalanges in brachypodism mice (which carry functional null mutations of growth differentiation factor 5 and exhibit hypoplastic phalanges) as a model of the bone hypoplasia in symbrachydactyly.
METHODS: F

INTRODUCTION: Calcaneus fracture surgery requires a well thought-out but pragmatic approach. The general fracture dislocation pattern involves shortening and varus deformation. The sinus tarsi approach (STA), which is performed in the lateral decubitus position, has become a more popular option due to its decreased soft tissue complication rate, while retaining the ability to perform anatomic reduction and fixation of most calcaneus fractures. As the STA technique requires indirect reduction, an assistive devise can be used to facilitate the reduction.
TECHNIQUE: The STA is performed in the l

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous intramedullary screws have recently become a fixation option for the surgical management of lesser metatarsal fractures. Their advantages over Kirschner (K)-wire fixation include avoidance of pin site complications, fixation stability, and need for removal. To date, there has been limited literature published on their use and safety profile. The purpose of this study is to determine the frequency and extent of flexor tendon disruption associated with percutaneous intramedullary screw fixation for lesser metatarsal fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Ankle sprains are among the most common injuries in dancers. Following one or more severe sprains, some individuals will experience residual mechanical and functional deficits, otherwise known as chronic ankle instability (CAI). Dancers who suffer from CAI may have weaker musculature surrounding the ankle and altered landing mechanics. The purpose of this study was to compare ankle strength and saut de chat landing mechanics between dancers with and without CAI.
METHODS: Dancers with and without CAI, defined by the Identification of Functional Ankle Instability (IdFAI), particip

CONTEXT: Individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI) exhibit impaired lower limb biomechanics during unilateral drop-jump landings on a flat surface. However, lower limb biomechanical adaptations during unilateral drop-jump landings on more challenging surfaces, such as those that are unstable or inclined, have not been described.
OBJECTIVE: To determine how unilateral drop-jump landing surfaces (flat, unstable, and inclined) influence lower limb electromyography, kinematics, and kinetics in individuals with CAI.
DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study.
SETTING: Biomechanics laboratory.

BACKGROUND: Limited data are available comparing the results of lateral sesamoidectomy and medial sesamoidectomy for the treatment of fractures recalcitrant to nonoperative treatment interventions. The hypothesis of this study was that sesamoidectomy for either lateral or medial sesamoid fractures would not change radiographic alignment of the first ray given the use of identical reconstruction of the plantar plate, intersesamoid ligament, and plantar ligament complex at the time of surgery.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study compared the outcomes of 46 consecutive patients treated with

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tibial nerve is a branch of the sciatic nerve and it is the main nerve innervating the muscles of the back of the leg. The tibial nerve divides into medial and lateral plantar nerves. The level of division may be important for surgical purpose. The main aim of the present study was to observe the exact level of division of the tibial nerve and discuss its clinical implications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 20 cadaveric limbs (irrespective of left or right side) were taken randomly. The posterior compartment of the thigh and leg was dissected to trace the tibial

Surgical incision-induced nociception contributes to the occurrence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction. However, the exact mechanisms involved remain unclear. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been demonstrated to improve fear learning ability. In addition, BDNF expression is influenced by the peripheral nociceptive stimulation. Therefore, we hypothesized that surgical incision-induced nociception may cause learning impairment by inhibiting the BDNF/tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB) signaling pathway. The fear conditioning test, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and Western b

BACKGROUND: A proportion of people who have been diagnosed with peripheral arterial disease and diabetes mellitus will be susceptible to chronic wounds. Oxygen is vital for wound healing, so oxygen measurements should to be taken as predictive values for wound healing in patients. When measuring oxygen at the wound bed, there is potentially a risk of cross-infection if no protective barrier is used; and skin stripping if an adhesive barrier is used on the wound bed. This cross sectional within subject repeated measures pilot study, aims to determine if the application of opsite film, as an inf

BACKGROUND: Toenail disorders are frequent, especially onychomycosis. The interobserver variability of nail signs needs to be known before these signs can be confidently applied for diagnosis.
OBJECTIVES: To describe observer agreement in toenail findings as described by dermatologists in standard clinical practice, focusing on signs that could be useful for diagnosis of onychomycosis.
METHODS: Prospective cross-sectional study in five dermatology departments. Eighty-six patients with abnormal toenails that could have onychomycosis as a differential diagnosis were independently examined by a

The orientation and rear legs have different roles in the spike jump (SPJ) in volleyball, yet the relationship between the jump height and kinetics of each leg remains underexplored. We aimed to clarify the relationships between jump height and kinetics of the orientation and rear legs in the SPJ. This study included 18 female college volleyball players. The experimental trial comprised an SPJ with a three-step run-up. The motion and ground reaction forces were measured using eight high-speed cameras and two force plates. Kinetic variables from the last foot contact to take-off were calculated

Treatment of Malassezia pachydermatis-associated seborrhoeic dermatitis with oral itraconazole was investigated in six Devon Rex cats (DRC). The cutaneous populations of Malassezia were determined using contact plates and a swab-wash method before and after 21 days of pulse treatment with itraconazole (5 mg kg-1 once daily, 7 days on, 7 days off, 7 days on). Before treatment, all cats had greasy seborrhoeic dermatitis involving the axillae, groin, claw folds and palmar and plantar interdigital skin, and two had similar lesions on the ventral neck. After treatment, there was a significant (P<0.
