The Additive Labor of Survival: A Scoping Review of Black Familial Strategization in Preparation for Police Interactions.

Black American families are aware of the precarious nature of police interactions. Black people are disproportionately killed by the police at such levels that police violence is now categorized as a public health issue among the Black population. Black children and youth are not exempt from police violence and tend to be adultified or perceived as older than their biological age. In recognition of police violence, Black families engage in a context-specific socialization process, commonly referred to as "the Talk" to adequately prepare their children for potential police interactions. To expl…

Ethnic Disparities in Police Diversion and Criminalisation for Drug Possession in England: A Study of 32,758 Incidents.

INTRODUCTION: Police-led drug diversion schemes have expanded across England, yet little is known about whether their use reproduces established ethnic disparities in policing outcomes. METHODS: Using individual-level data from 32,758 incidents recorded by 15 police forces (covering 38% of England's population), we conducted a cohort study to estimate ethnic differences in the likelihood of: (i) being offered diversion for suspected drug possession; and (ii) receiving a criminal sanction. Mixed-effects logistic regression models were used to adjust for age, sex, suspected drug type and police…

Characteristics of child physical abuse cases that are referred by the police for a clinical forensic medical examination.

In child physical abuse cases, a clinical forensic medical examination (CFME) is performed to document medical evidence, such as lesions and scars. In Denmark, however, not all cases are referred by the police to a CFME, and we aimed to study the key characteristics of police reported cases of child physical abuse (N = 136, ages 4-17 years) - case context, the child's disclosure and sociodemographic factors - that could influence the police's selection process. Associations between case characteristics and CFME referrals were studied using univariate and multivariate logistic regression models…

Descriptive Profile of Upper Limb Injuries in a Specialized Police Intervention Unit: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Police work is associated with high physical demands and an increased risk of occupational injury, particularly among specialized tactical units exposed to intense operational activity. Musculoskeletal injuries are common in law enforcement personnel and frequently result in work incapacity, but data specifically addressing upper limb injuries in intervention units remain limited. The aim of this study was to characterize the clinical profile of upper limb injuries reported as duty-related accidents in a Portuguese police intervention unit and to analyze their association with surg…

COVID-19 Social Restrictions' Impact on the Health-Related Physical Fitness of the Police Cadets.

We aim to examine the changes in health-related physical fitness components, before and after COVID-19 social restrictions, in Police Academy cadets by age, sex, and physical activity (PA) level. A longitudinal analysis of 156 cadets (29.5% women) aged 25.4 ± 5.3 years old was conducted. All variables were collected before and after the lockdown period (13 weeks). PA levels were assessed with a self-reported questionnaire. Health-related physical fitness components were assessed based on the standardized protocols of morphological evaluation, speed, agility, strength, flexibility, and aerobic …

Police perspectives on the economic considerations of providing healthcare in short-term custodial settings in Australia.

Providing appropriate healthcare to people in short-term police custody settings (i.e. watch-houses) is challenging due to the complexity of detainee health needs and the limitations of the custodial environment. However, little is known about how detainee healthcare is managed in Australia, including economic considerations. This study had two aims: (1) to understand police perspectives on the costs associated with the delivery of healthcare to watch-house detainees in Queensland, Australia and (2) to scope the applicability of the Prison Healthcare Expenditure Reporting Checklist (PHERC) too…

Policing Pot: State-Level Cannabis Arrests Increase Perceived Risks and Costs but Not Use.

Legal sanctions are purported to play a role in cannabis use and related consequences. General models of deterrence suggest that increases in arrests should decrease consumption by heightening perceptions of the negative consequences of use as well as the likelihood and severity of penalties. The present study examined if arrests resulting from cannabis possession relate to cannabis consumption, perceptions of use, and likelihood and severity of related penalties. Combining data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health with the FBI Uniform Crime Report (2002-2013) allowed for the estima

"ARREST ALL STREET MENDICANTS AND BEGGARS:" HOMELESSNESS, SOCIAL COOPERATION, AND THE COMMITMENTS OF DEMOCRATIC POLICING.

In "Are Police the Key to Public Safety?: The Case of the Unhoused," Barry Friedman argues that one of the problems with policing in the United States is that it encompasses too narrow a view of public safety. In the case of homelessness, this narrow view fails to understand that providing shelter and subsistence to the unhoused is providing them with a basic form of safety as well. By this view, enforcing most laws against the behaviors associated with homelessness is unjust because it penalizes people for seeking a form of personal security that the government should have provided them with.…

Transfer of Avatar Training Effects to Investigative Field Interviews of Children Conducted by Police Officers.

Previous research with students and some professional groups (psychologists) has demonstrated that repeated feedback in simulated investigative interviews with computerized child avatars improves the quality of interviews conducted with real children who have witnessed a mock event. However, it is not known whether this type of training would improve the quality of investigative interviews with actual child victims and witnesses of physical and sexual abuse. Twenty-two police investigators participated in the study. Half of them received feedback during four simulated interviews whereas the ot…

To watch or not to watch: When reviewing body-worn camera footage improves police reports.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed how police officers' review of body-worn camera (BWC) footage, either before or after writing an initial report, affects subsequent police reports. HYPOTHESES: We had competing hypotheses regarding the effect of BWC footage review before writing a police report on the total amount of information reported (Hypothesis 1) but expected it to increase "on-camera" details while reducing "off-camera" details (Hypothesis 2) and increase the accuracy of reports (Hypothesis 3). We predicted that footage review after writing an initial report would result in more complete and more…

Are Liaison and Diversion interventions in policing delivering the planned impact: A longitudinal evaluation in two constabularies?

Liaison and Diversion (L&D) has twin objectives: improving mental health outcomes and reducing re-offending. Early diversion from police custody seems promising, but evidence of benefit is required to sustain such programmes. To test the hypothesis that contact with L&D services while in police custody would lead to improved mental health outcomes and a reduction in type and level of offending, we used a pre-post service use design. National Health Service (NHS) records in two counties were searched for evidence that patients had been involved with L&D services while in police custody during t…

Risk Factors for Severe Violence in Intimate Partner Stalking Situations: An Analysis of Police Records.

Stalkers can be violent, and empirical studies have sought to identify factors associated with violence perpetrated by the stalker. Most of these works view physical violence as a homogeneous construct and do not differentiate between moderate and severe violence. The present study aims to identify correlates of nonviolent, moderate, and severe physical violence within an archival sample of 369 domestically violent police incident reports, where stalking behavior was indicated. The incident reports utilized in this study occurred between 2013 and 2017, among intimate or ex-intimate partners. T…

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Is a Risk Factor for Multiple Addictions in Police Officers Hospitalized for Alcohol.

BACKGROUND: In police officers, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD), but we lack data on the association between PTSD and other substance-related and addictive disorders. OBJECTIVES: We assessed whether PTSD could be a risk factor for different substance-related and addictive disorders in police officers, including alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and gambling. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included all police officers admitted consecutively for alcohol to an inpatient ward dedicated to police officers (Le Courbat rehabilitation center, France; …

Salivary Oxytocin and Vasopressin Levels in Police Officers With and Without Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterised by symptoms associated with maladaptive fear and stress responses, as well as with social detachment. The neuropeptides oxytocin (OT) and arginine vasopressin (AVP) have been associated with both regulating fear and neuroendocrine stress responsiveness and social behaviour. However, there is only limited evidence for dysregulated peripheral OT and AVP levels in PTSD patients. The present study aimed to investigate basal salivary OT and AVP levels in trauma-exposed male and female police officers with and without PTSD. Saliva samples were c…

Police officers: a high-risk group for the development of mental health disturbances? A cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Policing is generally considered a high-risk profession for the development of mental health problems, but this assumption lacks empirical evidence. Research question of the present study is to what extent mental health disturbances, such as (very) severe symptoms of anxiety, depression and hostility are more prevalent among police officers than among other occupational groups. DESIGN: Multicomparative cross-sectional study using the data of several cross-sectional and longitudinal studies in the Netherlands. PARTICIPANTS: Two samples of police officers (N=144 and 503), employees…

The role of stalking in domestic violence crime reports generated by the Colorado Springs Police Department.

A review of 1,785 domestic violence crime reports generated by the Colorado Springs Police Department found that 1 in 6 (16.5 percent) contained evidence the suspect stalked the victim. Female victims were significantly more likely than male victims to allege stalking by their partners (18.3 vs. 10.5 percent). Most stalkers were former rather than current intimates. Regardless of victims' gender, reports with stalking allegations were significantly less likely to mention physical abuse or victim injury in the presenting condition, to involve households with children, or to involve victims and …
