Cervical cancer incidence by ethnic group in Scotland from 2008 to 2017: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: There is limited information on cervical cancer incidence among different ethnic groups. This study used a name classification system to describe recent patterns of cervical cancer by ethnic group in Scotland. METHODS: Data on incident cases of cancer of the cervix and carcinoma in situ diagnosed in Scotland from 2008 to 2017 were extracted from the Scottish Cancer Registry. Onomap was applied to ascribe ethnicity to each patient. Ethnic groups were categorised as White, Black, South-Asian, Chinese and Other. Age-standardised rates (ASRs) were calculated for each year, as well as

Transanal irrigation (TAI) in the paediatric population: Literature review and consensus of an Italian multicentre working group.

Constipation and fecal incontinence in pediatric patients are conditions due to either functional or organic bowel dysfunction and may represent a challenging situation both for parents, pediatricians, and pediatric surgeons. Different treatments have been proposed throughout the past decades with partial and alternant results and, among all proposed techniques, in the adult population the Transanal Irrigation (TAI) has become popular. However, little is known about its efficacy in children. Therefore, a group of Italian pediatric surgeons from different centers, all experts in bowel managemen

Disease burden due to Group B Streptococcus in the Indian population and the need for a vaccine - a narrative review.

Streptococcus agalactiae, a Gram-positive bacterium, causes invasive infection known as Group B streptococcal disease (GBS). It is a leading cause of neonatal death and complications prior to delivery. The burden of GBS is unknown in India despite the high incidence of preterm and stillbirths. In this study, we performed a narrative review of the available literature (published in the last 10 years) on the epidemiology of GBS, using PubMed and Google Scholar, to understand its impact in India and evaluate potential strategies to prevent the disease in the high-risk population, that is, neonate

HIV service delivery in the time of COVID-19: focus group discussions with key populations in India.

INTRODUCTION: There are limited data on the impact of COVID-19-associated disruptions and novel HIV service delivery strategies among key populations (KPs) in low- and middle-income countries. In March 2020, in response to COVID-19, the Government of India revised HIV service delivery policies to include community antiretroviral therapy (ART) distribution and multi-month dispensing (MMD) of ART for all people living with HIV (PLHIV). METHODS: To assess the acceptability of these adaptations and impact of the pandemic among KPs, we conducted focus groups in November-December 2020 with purposiv

Identification of epidemic scarlet fever group A Streptococcus strains in the paediatric population of Houston, TX, USA.

Scarlet fever (SF) has recently been associated with group A streptococcal (GAS) strains possessing multidrug resistance and specific streptococcal exotoxins. We screened a local surveillance collection of GAS emm12 strains in Houston, TX, USA for antimicrobial resistance and identified a single isolate matching the antimicrobial resistance pattern previously reported for SF clones. Using whole-genome sequencing and combining genome sequence data derived from national surveillance databases, we identified additional emm12 GAS clones similar to those associated with prior SF outbreaks, emphasiz

Prevention of severe respiratory syncytial virus infection in the pediatric population in Mexico: position of a group of experts.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the agent that causes more hospitalizations and deaths due to lower acute respiratory infection. Its distribution is widespread, and almost every child has been infected by the age of two years. Different risk populations have been identified: preterm newborns (NB), children with congenital heart disease, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, asthmatics, neuromuscular diseases, among others. However, preterm NBs, children with congenital heart disease or bronchopulmonary dysplasia show higher rates of hospitalization and death from RSV

Risk factors for anaemia among Ghanaian women and children vary by population group and climate zone.

Anaemia has serious effects on human health and has multifactorial aetiologies. This study aimed to determine putative risk factors for anaemia in children 6-59 months and 15- to 49-year-old non-pregnant women living in Ghana. Data from a nationally representative cross-sectional survey were analysed for associations between anaemia and various anaemia risk factors. National and stratum-specific multivariable regressions were constructed separately for children and women to calculate the adjusted prevalence ratio (aPR) for anaemia of variables found to be statistically significantly associated

Molecular epidemiology of group B streptococci in Ireland reveals a diverse population with evidence of capsular switching.

The molecular epidemiology of group B Streptococcus (GBS) in Ireland was investigated. Invasive (n = 132) and non-invasive (n = 45) isolates, collected in 2007-2011, were analysed by multilocus locus sequence typing, capsular polysaccharide (CPS) serotyping, profiling of surface proteins, pilus islands (PI), and antimicrobial susceptibility. Isolates grouped into 45 sequence types and five main clonal complexes (CC). CC1, CC17 and CC23 represented 67.2 % of isolates and the most prevalent serotypes Ia, III and V. Serotype and surface protein genes were largely predictive of CC. Accordingly, CP

The impact of sexually abstaining groups on persistence of sexually transmitted infections in populations with ephemeral pair bonds.

Individuals often stop reproducing some time before they die. In this paper we compose and analyze a logistic two-sex population model in which individuals form pairs just to mate (i.e. pair bonds are ephemeral) and later move on to sexually abstaining groups. Using this model, we study the impact of sexually abstaining groups on persistence of a benign sexually transmitted infection (STI) in populations with such ephemeral pair bonds. We observe that the presence of sexually abstaining groups cannot prevent an STI from invasion or eliminate it when already present if the transition rates to t

Distinct microbial populations exist in the mucosa-associated microbiota of sub-groups of irritable bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence to support a role for the gastrointestinal microbiota in the etiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Given the evidence of an inflammatory component to IBS, the mucosa-associated microbiota potentially play a key role in its pathogenesis. The objectives were to compare the mucosa-associated microbiota between patients with diarrhea predominant IBS (IBS-D), constipation predominant IBS (IBS-C) and controls using fluorescent in situ hybridization and to correlate specific bacteria groups with individual IBS symptoms. METHODS: Forty-seven patients wit

Soft tissue cephalometric norms for a North Indian population group using Legan and Burstone analysis.

Cephalometric norms are used for providing guidance to clinicians during diagnosis and treatment planning. Most classical norms are not applicable to diverse racial and ethnic population hence the purpose of this study was to establish the soft tissue norms of a North Indian population group using Legan and Burstone soft tissue analysis. The study was conducted on 60 adult subjects with esthetically pleasing profiles aged 18-25 years. Standardized lateral cephalograms were taken in a natural head position and analyzed. North Indians were found to have more convex faces, protrusive lips and acu

Pyrethroid susceptibility in natural populations of the Anopheles punctulatus group (Diptera: Culicidae) in Papua New Guinea.

The development of insecticide resistance has compromised mosquito control efforts in many parts of the world. Papua New Guinea (PNG) has a long history of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) use and currently distributes pyrethroid-treated nets for malaria control. This study is the first to investigate the status of pyrethroid resistance in the Anopheles punctulatus group, the major malaria and filariasis vectors of PNG. The study used World Health Organization standard susceptibility bioassays to detect knockdown phenotypes and a novel nested polymerase chain reaction to detect the knockd

Population structure of group B streptococcus from a low-incidence region for invasive neonatal disease.

The population structure of group B streptococcus (GBS) from a low-incidence region for invasive neonatal disease (Israel) was investigated using multilocus genotype data. The strain collection consisted of isolates from maternal carriage (n=104) and invasive neonatal disease (n=50), resolving into 46 sequence types. The most prevalent sequence types were ST-1 (17.5 %), ST-19 (10.4 %), ST-17 (9.7 %), ST-22 (8.4 %) and ST-23 (6.5 %). Serotype III was the most common, accounting for 29.2 % of the isolates. None of the serotypes was significantly associated with invasive neonatal disease. burst a

Distribution of interleukin-1beta(+3954) and IL-1alpha(-889) genetic variations in a Thai population group.

BACKGROUND: The severe form of chronic periodontitis (CP) has been reported to be strongly associated with the presence of allele 2 of composite IL-1beta(+3954) and IL-1alpha(-889) genetic polymorphisms (genotype positive). However, other studies have reported conflicting findings, not only on the association between the composite IL-1 gene polymorphisms and CP, but also the link between IL-1 gene polymorphisms and aggressive periodontitis (AgP). These might have resulted from differences in ethnic background and disease entities. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of IL-1
