Suicide due to postpartum depression is the most common perinatal-related death and is a social concern in Japan. Nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy may contribute to postpartum depression; therefore, we investigated the relationship between postpartum depression and nutritional status during pregnancy and postpartum. We focused specifically on ketone bodies because they are known to protect brain cells. The relationship between the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) scores and the serum levels of ketone bodies and vitamin D, thyroid function, and iron metabolism was examined.

BACKGROUND: There have been reports of the development of ophthalmopathy in patients with subacute thyroiditis (SAT) in the absence of Grave … ing observation that should be further addressed in larger groups of patients, including those with postpartum thyroiditis. These preliminary findings also raise questions about the mechanism for the link between ophthalmopathy and thyroid autoimmunity.

Thyrotoxicosis is a constellation of symptoms including palpitations, tremors, agitation, and heat intolerance, caused by excess thyroid hormone. It can be life-threatening in its most serious form. We present a rare case of thyrotoxicosis provoked by mechanical trauma to the neck via strangulation in a young female with a history of self-resolving postpartum symptoms of hyperthyroidism one year prior, but no formal diagnosis of thyroid dysfunction. Although hyperthyroidism and posttraumatic stress have many similar features, thyroid storm is a life-threatening disorder that needs immediate in

The early postpartum period is a time of transition for families. Breastfeeding, the optimal form of feeding for newborns, doesn't always come naturally. Medical interventions at birth can affect early breastfeeding, and close follow up of breastfeeding couplets is essential. New mothers often deal with challenges such a postpartum depression, thyroid disease, perineal pain, and other sexual concerns. Physicians can support families in this transition period to help optimize it for the mother and her baby.

BACKGROUND: Iodine is an intrinsic element of thyroid hormone, which is essential for childhood growth and development. The Ideal Breast Milk (IBM) cohort study aims to evaluate the effects of maternal iodine status during pregnancy and lactation on maternal thyroid function, offspring growth and development, and offspring thyroid function.
METHODS: The IBM cohort study recruited pregnant women from Seoul National University Hospital between June 2016 and August 2017, followed by enrollment of their offspring after delivery. For the maternal participants, iodine status is evaluated by urinary

Endocrine disorders, in particular, thyroid disorders, are common in pregnancy. The endocrine adaptation to pregnancy, need for adequate iodine supplementation, and thyroxine replacement are presented. In addition, autoimmune diseases of the thyroid and pituitary that may occur subsequent to the immune changes of pregnancy and the postpartum period are discussed. A brief account of the presentation of other endocrine disorders (ie, pituitary, parathyroid, calcium, adrenal and gonadal disorders) also is given, along with their evaluation and management.

In recent years transient primary hypothyroidism has reported with increasing frequency. Physicians are often unsure whether withdrawal of thyroid hormone to identify the transient hypothyroidism is indicated and cost-effective and in which patients this should be done. To study these questions, thyroid hormone therapy was withdrawn from 63 patients with proven primary hypothyroidism at 6 months and again at 1 and 3 years to determine if there was recovery of thyroid function. Of the 49 patients with primary hypothyroidism (PH) that was not attributable to such causes as drug therapy, surgery,

Background/Objectives: Postpartum depression (PPD), the most common and prevalent psychiatric disorder after birth, is a prevalent yet underdiagnosed psychiatric condition that remains insufficiently understood, particularly in terms of its biological basis. While epidemiological data are extensive, few studies have systematically investigated their underlying biological mechanisms. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential links between blood biomarker levels and postpartum depressive symptoms, contributing to the development of a unified biological model of PPD. Methods: We cond

In a prospectively planned study of 591 Danish women thyroid dysfunction after delivery was found in 23 (3.9%). Seven women were hypothyroid and 16 were thyrotoxic. In seven of the thyrotoxic subjects a hypothyroid phase followed. Thyroid dysfunction was mostly transient with complete resolution within a year but persisted in three women (13%). Three months after delivery a positive titre of thyroid microsomal antibodies (TMAb) was found in 38 women (6.4%). Positive titres of TMAb were more often found in women with thyroid dysfunction than in those without (20/38 vs. 3/553). Maximal TMAb titr

Purpose: To review the long-term cardiovascular risks associated with three common perinatal endocrine disorders-gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), and thyroid dysfunction (including postpartum thyroiditis)-and to identify opportunities for early risk stratification and prevention. Materials and Methods: We conducted a structured literature search of PubMed and Web of Science for peer-reviewed articles published between January 2000 and December 2025. Search terms included combinations related to GDM, HDP, thyroid dysfunction, and cardiovascular dis…

BACKGROUND Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a potentially life-threatening, pregnancy-associated cause of heart failure affecting previously healthy women. Recent research suggests a possible role of 16-kDa prolactin in promoting cardiomyocyte damage. However, the genetic predisposition is not well recognized. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 25-year-old woman with a severe course of PPCM with left ventricle ejection fraction of 25-30%, complicated by ventricular arrhythmia and postpartum thyroiditis. As no traditional risk factors of PPCM were identified, the patient was referred for ge…
