Influence of the Craniocervical Posture on Tongue Strength and Endurance.

Tongue strength has an important role in the swallowing process, and previous research has suggested that tongue position, concerning the craniomandibular region, could affect the oral function. This study aimed to evaluate the strength and endurance of three areas of the tongue in three experimentally induced craniocervical postures. A cross-sectional study with a nonprobabilistic sample of 37 participants (mean age: 3.85 ± 3.64 years; 20 men, 17 women) was performed. Tongue strength and endurance were assessed using a pressure device entitled Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI), in three…

[Dentofacial dysmorphoses : distant links with musculo-skeletal system and posture].

According to several theories, the oro-facial sphere would be interconnected with the rest of the body justifying the requests for care to improve a body zone at a distance. The aim of this literature review was to look for potential distant links of dysmorphoses of the three dimensions of space according to the etiopathogenic theories and the data of science. We carried out a keyword search leading to 58 references. In the transverse dimension, the transverse maxillary hypoplasia and dissymmetry of the molar class of the transverse dimension would not induce a change in the distribution of th

Surgeons' posture and muscle strain during laparoscopic and robotic surgery.

BACKGROUND: It is assumed that conventional laparoscopy (LAP) and robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery (RALS) differ in terms of the surgeon's comfort. This study compared muscle workload, work posture and perceived physical exertion of surgeons performing LAP or RALS. METHODS: Colorectal surgeons with experience in advanced LAP and RALS performed one of each operation. Bipolar surface electromyography (EMG) recordings were made from forearm, shoulder and neck muscles, and expressed relative to EMG maximum (%EMGmax ). The static, median and peak levels of muscle activity were calculated, and…

Longitudinal change in foot posture in children with cerebral palsy.

PURPOSE: Foot deformities are common in children with cerebral palsy (CP), yet the evolution of such deformities is not well documented. We aimed to observe and analyse changes in foot posture during growth in children with CP. Methods We followed 51 children (16 unilateral, 35 bilateral; 37 Gross Motor Function Classification Scale (GMFCS) I/II, 14 III/IV) aged two to 12 years in this level II, IRB-approved prospective longitudinal study. Data after bony foot corrections were excluded. Outcome measures included coronal plane pressure index (CPPI) and pressure impulses from the heel, medial mi…

Neural Control of Posture in Individuals with Persisting Postconcussion Symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Postural instability has been shown to characterize individuals who suffered from long-term symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury. However, recordings of neural processes during postural control are difficult to realize with standard neuroimaging techniques. Thus, we used functional nearinfrared spectroscopy to investigate brain oxygenation of individuals with persistent postconcussion symptoms (pPCS) during postural control in altered environments. METHODS: We compared brain oxygenation and postural sway during balance control in three groups: individuals suffering from pP

Upper extremity function: What's posture got to do with it?

This perspective paper reviews the linkage between developing postural control and upper extremity function. We suggest updated principles for guiding clinical practice, based on current views from motor learning, motor development, and motor control research. Using three clinical examples, we illustrate principles focusing on the use of variability, the importance of errors in learning movement, task specific exploration and practice, and the critical timing necessary to build skill of the upper extremity in a variety of postures. These principles differ from historic approaches in therapeuti…

Effects of vision and lumbar posture on trunk neuromuscular control.

The goal of this study was to determine the effects of vision and lumbar posture on trunk neuromuscular control. Torso perturbations were applied with a pushing device while the subjects were restrained at the pelvis in a kneeling-seated position. Torso kinematics and the muscle activity of the lumbar part of the M. Longissimus were recorded for 14 healthy subjects. Four conditions were included: a flexion, extension and neutral lumbar posture with eyes closed and the neutral posture with eyes open. Frequency response functions of the admittance and reflexes showed that there was no significan…

Visually guided adjustments of body posture in the roll plane.

Body position relative to gravity is continuously updated to prevent falls. Therefore, the brain integrates input from the otoliths, truncal graviceptors, proprioception and vision. Without visual cues estimated direction of gravity mainly depends on otolith input and becomes more variable with increasing roll-tilt. Contrary, the discrimination threshold for object orientation shows little modulation with varying roll orientation of the visual stimulus. Providing earth-stationary visual cues, this retinal input may be sufficient to perform self-adjustment tasks successfully, with resulting var

Spinal lordosis optimizes the requirements for a stable erect posture.

BACKGROUND: Lordosis is the bending of the lumbar spine that gives the vertebral column of humans its characteristic ventrally convex curvat … th and force-velocity relationships. The model was used to analyze the stability of an upright body posture. According to our results, lordosis reduces the local joint torques necessary for an equilibrium of the vertebral column during an erect posture. At the same time lordosis increases the demands on the global muscles to provide stability. CONCLUSION …

Posture and posterior crossbite in oral and nasal breathing children.

The most known etiologic factors of oral breathing may influence the craniofacial development leading to anatomical and functional alterations. A proper head and cervical spine posture allows a well functioning of the stomatognathic system structures and vice versa. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of posterior crossbite in a group of oral breathing children (OB) and nasal (NB) and associate the type of bite with the head and cervical spine posture. It was concluded that most of the children, either oral or nasal breathers, did not present a crossbite and any kind of head po…

Can posture analysis point towards curve progression in scoliotic subjects?

Previous research employing biomechanical measurement has demonstrated asymmetries in kinematics and kinetics. Similar asymmetries have been reported from anthropometric studies. These findings suggest that asymmetry may play an important aetiological role in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The present study is a part of a wider comprehensive investigation aimed at identifying asymmetries in lower limb kinematics and pelvic and back movements during level walking in a sample of scoliotic subjects. Such asymmetries may be related to the spinal deformity. While previous studies indicate t

Changes in the standing posture of stroke patients during rehabilitation.

The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in the standing center of pressure (COP) in a hemiplegic adult population at the beginning and the end of in-patient rehabilitation. The trajectory of the COP was recorded on a force platform and was analyzed in terms of the frequency spectra of the center of gravity (COG), and the frequency spectra of the COP minus COG, a derived measure of neuromuscular stiffness. The study population consisted of eight hemiplegic subjects, median age of 53.5 years (range 27-79 years). The median interval between stroke and the first series of measures was 31
