Nonacademic predictors of China medical licensing examination.

BACKGROUND: National Medical Licensing Examination (NMLE) is the entrance exam for medical practice in China, and its general medical knowledge test (GMKT) evaluates abilities of medical students to comprehensively apply medical knowledge to clinical practice. This study aimed to identify nonacademic predictors of GMKT performance, which would benefit medical schools in designing appropriate strategies and techniques to facilitate the transition from medical students to qualified medical practitioners. METHODS: In 1202 medical students, we conducted the deletion-substitution-addition (DSA) an

Toxic Leadership and Employee Outcomes Among Mental Health Nurses: Examining the Associations with Psychological Distress, Somatic Symptoms, and Organizational Citizenship Behavior Through Structural Equation Modeling.

Background: Mental health nurses work in high-pressure environments where leadership styles strongly influence well-being and job performance. Toxic leadership, including abusive and authoritarian behaviors, can contribute to psychological distress, somatic symptoms, reduced job satisfaction, and lower organizational effectiveness. It may also decrease Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB), which reflects voluntary positive workplace behaviors. Intrinsic motivation may help buffer these negative effects by enhancing employees' internal drive and resilience. Therefore, this study examines t

[Post-stroke psychological pain: presentation of therapeutic support through artistic mediation].

The subjective experience of stroke in the elderly, as well as the specific support it requires, remains insufficiently explored. While much attention has been given to the psychopathological manifestations frequently observed post-stroke (such as mood disorders, agitation, and aggression), there is a risk that the potential role of the psychological dynamics may be overshadowed by a more direct symptomatic reading of the cerebral lesion. Nevertheless, stroke represents a significant existential disruption, a somatic and psychological experience whose sequelae and resulting psychological suffe

Effectiveness of a Positive Psychological Intervention Based on the PERMA Model on Fear of Disease Progression in Parents of Children with Acute Leukemia.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the efficacy of a positive psychological intervention based on the positive emotion, engagement, relationship, meaning, and accomplishment (PERMA) model in reducing the fear of disease progression among parents of children with acute leukemia. METHODS: A quasi-experimental pretest‒post-test design was employed. We recruited parents of children with acute leukemia from a general hospital and divided them into intervention (n=32) and control groups (n=32). The intervention group received an 8-week positive psychological intervention according to the PERMA model. The c

From operating room to recovery: Evidence and gaps in cardiac surgical nursing integrative psychological support.

This review explored the application and effectiveness of and research gaps in integrative psychological support in patients undergoing cardiac surgery during the perioperative period. These patients often encounter psychological issues such as anxiety and depression, which affect their postoperative recovery and quality of life. Previous research indicated that preoperative psychological assessments and interventions significantly enhance patients' psychological states and postoperative outcomes. Interventions, including preoperative education, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and cognitiv

Which practice makes perfect? The role of variability and agency in learning adaptive problem solving.

Adaptive problem solving-the ability to flexibly devise solutions to novel challenges-is a hallmark of human intelligence. Yet it remains unclear how best to cultivate this skill through training. Some researchers argue that variable practice promotes learning of generalisable rules, whereas others emphasize repetition and mastery of a single problem space before progressing to another. To address this question, 200 adults solved computerised physical reasoning problems under one of five practice regimens: active high-variable training (AHVT; many different problems), active low-variability tr

No motor learning during action-imagery practice and no intermanual transfer in the two-ball-rotation task.

Action-imagery is an internal simulation of sensory movement experiences in the absence of actual execution. Action-imagery practice (AIP), i.e. the repeated use of action-imagery has been shown to improve subsequent motor execution performance in many tasks. However, AIP is less effective than action-execution practice (AEP), particularly in motor tasks that involve few visuospatial components (e.g. spatial stimulus and response mappings). In such a task in AEP, the development of effector-dependent representations is expected, whereas effector-independent motor and visuospatial representatio

Linking memory and language: Evidence for a serial-order learning impairment in dyslexia.

The present study investigated long-term serial-order learning impairments, operationalized as reduced Hebb repetition learning (HRL), in people with dyslexia. In a first multi-session experiment, we investigated both the persistence of a serial-order learning impairment as well as the long-term retention of serial-order representations, both in a group of Dutch-speaking adults with developmental dyslexia and in a matched control group. In a second experiment, we relied on the assumption that HRL mimics naturalistic word-form acquisition and we investigated the lexicalization of novel word-for

Evaluating the treatment effect of repeated probes.

This study investigated the effect of the administration of frequent and infrequent probe lists on generalization to novel stimuli. Four subjects with multiple functional articulation errors were taught to produce two different sounds, and generalization was measured on three probe lists. Two of the probe lists (one for each sound) were administered infrequently, and the third probe list (for one sound) was presented at each treatment session. The results indicated that the frequent rate of administration of probe lists did not produce any predictable effect on the extent of generalization or

Psychological correlates of pain catastrophizing and disability in patients with Achilles tendinopathy: The roles of resilience and psychological inflexibility.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to clarify the contribution of psychological factors to pain adjustment in patients with Achilles tendinopathy. It specifically investigated the associations of psychological inflexibility, distress, and resilience with pain catastrophizing, and their indirect associations between pain intensity and pain disability. METHODS: A total of 120 participants (65% female; mean age = 49.17 years, SD = 12.06) completed validated measures of visual analog scales for pain level, psychological distress, psychological inflexibility, resilience, pain disability index, and pain c

Identifying experiences of physical and psychological violence in childhood that jeopardize mental health in adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations between profiles of physical and psychological violence in childhood from parents and two dimensions of mental health in adulthood (negative affect and psychological well-being). Profiles were distinguished by the types of violence retrospectively self-reported (only physical, only psychological, or both psychological and physical violence), as well as by the frequency at which each type of violence reportedly occurred (never, rarely, or frequently). METHODS: Multivariate regression models were estimated using data from the National Survey of Midlif

Social spatial structure and psychological mechanisms of seat-occupying behavior in university libraries-based on grounded theory analysis.

Occupying seats in university libraries is a situated practice shaped by the interaction of resource availability, environmental-psychological needs, institutional rules, and student responses under academic pressure. To reveal the underlying social logic of its emergence, grounded theory was employed to conduct coding analysis on 496 analyzable units derived from heterogeneous documentary, public-discourse, visual, and observational sources, and a multidimensional theoretical model of the social spatial structure of seat occupancy in university libraries was constructed. The analysis suggests

Best Practices for Peer Physical Examination in PA Education: A Trauma-informed, Culturally Sensitive Approach.

Peer physical examination (PPE) is a foundational component of physician assistant (PA) education, providing students with opportunities to develop essential clinical, communication, and professional skills through hands-on practice. However, PPE may present challenges for students whose participation is influenced by cultural or religious modesty, gender dynamics, or prior traumatic experiences. Programs often lack practical guidance for addressing these concerns while maintaining educational standards. This paper presents a trauma-informed, culturally responsive framework for implementing PPE

A culturally tailored Zhuang embroidery intervention for psychological well-being among Zhuang adults in the retirement transition in Guangxi: a waitlist-controlled quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Arts- and craft-based community programs may support psychological well-being in later life, yet few studies have examined culturally tailored ethnic heritage crafts as public health interventions in their communities of origin. METHODS: This waitlist-controlled quasi-experimental study evaluated an eight-week intervention integrating Zhuang embroidery practice, cultural storytelling, and group exchange among community-dwelling Zhuang adults aged 55-65 years in Guangxi, China. Eighty participants were allocated by community cluster to intervention or waitlist control groups and as

Building a more equitable society: Psychology's role in achieving health equity.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines health disparities as "preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or opportunities to achieve optimal health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations." Health disparities are often the result of persistent unjust policies and discriminatory practices that increase the risk of vulnerable populations for poor health. Environmental, social, and behavioral factors-all areas of psychology's expertise-contribute to health disparities in interacting ways. This article describes health disparities, i

Psychological distress in patients receiving critical care: An evolutionary concept analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Critically ill patients experience high levels of psychological distress; however, the recognition and management of psychological distress in the intensive care unit (ICU) remain underexplored. A concept analysis of psychological distress exists for some patient populations but none in critical care. The aim of this concept analysis was to clarify the contextual character of psychological distress in ICU patients, thereby improving recognition and management practices. METHODS: Rodgers' evolutionary approach aided a deeper examination of psychological distress in the critical c
