Oral health management in pediatric patients with "special needs". Integrated hospital care model involving dentistry and pediatrics for the management of pediatric patients with hemato-oncologic diseases.

Dental care for pediatric patients with special needs represents a significant clinical and organizational challenge that requires an integrated, multidisciplinary, and personalized approach. This paper presents a structured model of collaboration between Dentistry and Pediatric Hematology-Oncology developed at the San Gerardo dei Tintori Hospital in Monza since 1999, aimed at providing comprehensive management for children affected by hematologic-oncologic diseases. The integration of these two disciplines led to the creation of a diagnostic-therapeutic-assistance pathway (hereinafter referre

Prevalence and Patterns of Oral Mucosal Lesions Among Geriatric Patients in India: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Geriatric dentistry plays a pivotal role in addressing the oral health needs of the elderly population, who are prone to various age-related disorders affecting the oral mucosa. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions among geriatric patients in India, considering factors, such as age, gender, and systemic diseases. METHODOLOGY: A hospital-based retrospective study was conducted, analyzing medical and clinical examination records of 354 geriatric patients attending a dental college/hospital between 2022 and 2023. Data on demographics, systemic disea

Craniofacial Trauma of Equestrian Origin.

Horse riding is a popular yet dangerous sport, often resulting in facial traumas due to unpredictable horse reactions or falls. This retrospective study examines 20 patients. The aim of the study is to analyze maxillofacial traumas of equine origin and discuss prevention strategies. Conducted from 2004 to 2021 at our university hospital's emergency department in France, inclusion criteria encompassed patients with maxillofacial trauma admitted to the emergency department and referred to ENT and/or dentistry post-horse-related accidents. Patients were identified from the Health Data warehouse.

Brief Narrative Review on Commercial Dental Sealants-Comparison with Respect to Their Composition and Potential Modifications.

The scope of this paper is to compare different dental sealants and flow materials indicated for sealing pits and fissures considering their chemical formula. The narrative review aims to address the following questions: What is the essence of different dental sealants' activity, how does their chemical formula affect their mechanisms of caries prevention, and what makes a dental sealant efficient mean of caries prevention? Another vital issue is whether the sealants that contain fluoride, or any other additions, have potentially increased antimicrobial properties. An electronic search of the

Lasers in Dentistry: Practical Implications; What Is the Evidence?

The article discusses the science behind dental lasers and their potential applications across various dental procedures. It provides an overview of the theoretic background, including the principle of stimulated-emission introduced by Einstein and Maiman. The article also touches on the importance of thermal control when using lasers in dental treatments to prevent damage to surrounding tissues. While it notes the increasing interest in laser applications in areas like caries treatment, pediatric dentistry, and endodontics, the article stops short of drawing definitive conclusions, instead pr

A literature review of dental erosion in children.

Dental erosion is increasingly recognized as a common condition in paediatric dentistry with complications of tooth sensitivity, altered aesthetics and loss of occlusal vertical dimension. The prevalence of erosion in children has been reported to range from 10% to over 80%. The primary dentition is thought to be more susceptible to erosion compared to the permanent dentition due to the thinner and less mineralized enamel. The aim of this paper was to critically review dental erosion in children with regards to its prevalence, aetiology, diagnosis and prevention. The associations between erosi

Anticipatory guidance in infant oral health: rationale and recommendations.

If appropriate measures are applied early enough, it may be possible to totally prevent oral disease. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that infants be scheduled for an initial oral evaluation within six months of the eruption of the first primary tooth but by no later than 12 months of age. The rationale for this recommendation is provided, although the recommendation itself is not universally accepted. Specific recommendations include elimination of bottles in bed, early use of soft-bristled toothbrushes (with parental supervision) and limitation of high-carbohydrate foo

Promising new dental materials on the horizon.

The rapidly evolving field of materials science is providing dentistry with new treatments and alternatives. Calcium phosphate materials are under development for bone repair and replacement, root surface desensitization, and for caries prevention, by greatly increasing the remineralizing efficiency of fluorides. Composites fabricated from calcium phosphates and polymers may have application as pulp capping and cavity-basing materials. An alternative to mercury dental amalgam is being investigated; it is composed of silver powders that are cold-welded in the presence of a dilute acid. These ma

Local Anesthetic Hypersensitivity Reactions in Pediatric Patients: Recognition and Management.

Local anesthetics (LAs) are commonly used in all medical specialties, particularly in association with surgery, obstetrics, dentistry, and emergency departments. Most individuals, starting from young children, are exposed to LAs during life. LA hardly induces adverse events when used in recommended doses and with proper injection techniques. However, immediate anaphylactic reactions to LA injections may be a rare but life-threatening manifestation. A comprehensive report of the event and performing a specialist examination are crucial to prevent further episodes. The diagnosis should be based

Do endodontic compounds induce genetic damage? A comprehensive review.

Taking into consideration genetic damage plays an important role in carcinogenesis, the purpose of this paper is to provide an overview on the genotoxic potential of some endodontic compounds currently used in dentistry, such as formocresol, paramonochlorophenol, calcium hydroxide, resin-based sealers, phenolic compounds, chlorhexidine, mineral trioxide aggregate, and others. Some of these compounds appear capable of exerting noxious activity on the genetic material. The action mechanisms are discussed. Therefore, this is an area that warrants investigation since the estimation of risk of thes

Infective Endocarditis Among High-risk Individuals Before and After the Cessation of Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Dentistry: A National Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: A few years after the publication of the British guidelines, national recommendations were published by the Swedish Medical Products Agency in October 2012, promoting the cessation of antibiotic prophylaxis in dentistry for the prevention of infective endocarditis (IE). The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the incidence of oral streptococcal IE increased among high-risk individuals after October 2012. METHODS: This nationwide cohort study included all adult individuals (>17 years) living in Sweden from January 2008 to January 2018, with a diagnose code or surgical procedu

Applications of smart materials in minimally invasive dentistry - some research and clinical perspectives.

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is one of the most prevalent bacteria-induced non-communicable diseases globally. It is known to be the top oral health burden in both developing and developed nations. There is substantial literature on the disease process and there is still debate on the extent of caries removal needed and the adequacy of the materials available to restore the lost tooth structure. The current review discusses the disease process together with the contemporary management of the carious lesion and also presents substantial evidence on novel materials and techniques that make minimall
